[The blue spots syndrome].

Chronic relapsing painful ecchymoses occurring in female patients are described as the painful bruising syndrome. Several authors postulate, that the cause of this disease may be due to sensitization to autologous erythrocytes, whereas others suggest an artificial origin. A 24 year-old woman with this disease was tested intracutaneously with autologous and homologous erythrocytes, erythrocyte stroma and phosphatidyl-L-serine. Her reactions were inconsistent. Control persons could produce similar painful ecchymotic reactions to autologous erythrocytes by manipulation of the tested areas. These results provide evidence that the painful bruising syndrome is not due to autosensitization, but is an artificial phenomenon.

Effect of neutrophil-derived eosinophil chemotactic factor (ECF) in human and guinea pig skin.

The in vivo effectiveness of eosinophil chemotactic factor (ECF), secreted in vitro by human neutrophils (PMN) during phagocytosis, is tested in 2 model systems. Injection of ECF into guinea pig ears causes a preferential attraction of eosinophils with time that is more marked in animals with preexisting eosinophilia. In the same model system, activated serum attracts fewer eosinophils and more PMN. In human skin windows, ECF and activated serum are equally effective on a quantitative basis, but ECF is more selective for eosinophils in patients with eosinophilia. With normal controls, ECF and activated serum attract PMN equally well. The studies confirm previous in vitro observations on the properties of ECF and suggest a potentially significant role of this factor during pathological processes.

Atypical tuberous myxedema Jadassohn-Dössekker. Report of a case.

A 48-year-old male patient with atypical tuberous myxedema Jadassohn-Dössekker, characterized by nodules on both upper legs with mucin deposits, is described. Atypical tuberous myxedema Jadassohn-Dössekker can be classified together with lichen myxedematosus and scleromyxedema Arndt-Gottron as normothyrotic myxodermia. It can be distinguished from lichen myxedematosus only by the size of the lesions. The pathogenesis is unknown.

[Pit-shaped enamel defects in tuberous sclerosis].

In 6 patients affected with tuberous sclerosis, pit-shaped enamel defects were noted. Apparently, these defects are pathognomonic of this syndrome and may help to establish the diagnosis in oligosymptomatic cases.

[Pomade crust].

Exaggerated use of skin care topicals in infants may lead to brownish appositions in the inguinal and gluteal region described as pomade crust. Examination of scraping material by infra-red spectroscopy failed to reveal any residue of emollients but instead was characteristic of human scales. Certain topicals are apparently capable of inducing hyperkeratosis in these body regions.

[Clinical findings in porphyria cutanea tarda].

Disturbances in the iron metabolism can quite frequently be observed in patients with porphyria cutanea tarda. Studies on 10 patients with porphyria cutanea tarda indicate that elevated iron levels are correlated with decreased latent and normal total iron binding capacity in the serum. Morphological examinations of the liver showed alterations as can be found in fatty liver up to cirrhosis, which -- in most instances -- were associated with iron deposits in the hepatocytes.

[Linear pigmentation of nails].

A case of linear pigmentation of three fingernails is reported. Following extraction of the nail of the thumb the matrix displayed a 2X4 mm circumscribed pigmented area. Histologic examination revealed a junction nevus.

[Ascher's syndrome].

A case of Ascher's syndrome with blepharochalasis and double upper lip is described. It is emphasized that the combined appearance of these two symptoms is essential for the definition of this syndrome.

[Focal dermal hypoplasia with apocrine nevi and striation of bones (author's transl)].

In a 22 year-old female patient affected with focal dermal hypoplasia, multiple apocrine nevi occurred in the sternal region; these nevi may be part of the syndrome. Roentgenograms of the long bones revealed marked longitudinal striations. This anomaly represents a characteristic and hitherto underestimated feature of the syndrome.
