A videotape as introduction for cognitive behavioral therapy with depressed inpatients.

This paper reports on the development of a videotape "Depression ... the answers" for use in cognitive behavioral therapy with depressed inpatients. 17 patients evaluated the videotape. The described psychoeducational video program was constructed as an introduction for, an opening to, and as a facilitation and clarification of the psychotherapeutic and pharmacological treatments.

Adult

[Surgical prevention of retinal detachment].

Prophylaxis of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment consists of measures both non surgical and/or surgical that are effective in preventing some risk-factors that are part of the disease. The procedure must avoid any types of danger. This paper describes a new reliable surgical procedure of circular buckling used for prophylaxis on predisposed fellow-eye of giant retinal tear.

Humans

The role of the vitreous in diabetic macular edema.

The authors assessed retrospectively clinical records of 76 patients (125 eyes) 60 years of age or older with diabetic retinopathy who had undergone a vitreous examination. The groups consisted of 105 eyes (63 patients) with macular edema and 20 eyes (13 patients) without macular edema. Vitreous studies were done using the El Bayadi-Kajiura lens to determine whether or not the posterior vitreous was attached to the retina in the macula. Twenty-one of 105 eyes (20.0%) in the edema group and 11 of 20 eyes (55.0%) in the no-edema group had a detached posterior vitreous. This difference was found to be statistically significant, indicating that diabetic cases without macular edema have a significantly higher rate of posterior vitreous detachment than those with macular edema. This study demonstrates that the vitreous may play a role in diabetic macular edema.

Aged

[Retinal detachment caused by late-stage retinopathy of prematurity].

Retinal detachment occurring in late stages of retinopathy of prematurity may appear spontaneous when a short oxygen therapy in low birthweight infant has been failed to recognized. As it is initially a tractional detachment the understanding of underlying pathogenic mechanisms is still important to choose adequate treatment which will determine the success of the surgery. Six patients with R.D. were recognised as having late complication of R.P. on the aspect of pathological posterior retinal vasculature and typical history of prematurity and oxygen therapy. All cases were treated successfully by different procedures varying with the severity of the disease. Use of vitrectomy can be advised in some cases but, is still a dangerous procedure, especially in this peculiar condition.
