Graphical information retrieval by browsing meta-information.

This paper discusses an approach to alleviate the problem in information retrieval of finding the right information. This problem arises in traditional query-based systems when users do not have enough knowledge about the domain or if they do not have an articulate information need. We address this problem by combining information about the documents and about the domain of the documents. This meta-information can then be browsed by the users with a graphical browser. Several navigation aids help the user to find his way. The system contains a representation of the medical domain and records from the Medline literature database. The paper discusses the representation of the meta-information, the browser and the evaluation of the system.

Information retrieval: an overview of system characteristics.

The paper gives an overview of characteristics of information retrieval (IR) systems. The characteristics are identified from the descriptions of 23 IR systems. Four IR models are discussed: the Boolean model, the vector model, the probabilistic model and the connectionistic model. Twelve other characteristics of IR models are identified: search intermediary, domain knowledge, relevance feedback, natural language interface, graphical query language, conceptual queries, full-text IR, field searching, fuzzy queries, hypertext integration, machine learning, and ranked output. Finally, the relevance of IR systems for the World Wide Web is established.

User evaluation of a graphical user interface for biomedical literature search.

This paper gives a short overview of the Archimedes Network System, an information retrieval system that allows the user to browse, in a visual way, through domain knowledge about the topics discussed in the documents. The system was evaluated by medical students who used the system to find documents in Medline. The results were comparable with the results of WinSpirs, a Boolean retrieval system.
