Lobular capillary hemangioma, which is also named as pyogenic granuloma, is a common vascular proliferation of skin and mucous membranes. Hormonal influence in the development of lobular capillary hemangioma on the mucosal surfaces has been demonstrated but for cutaneous lesions located on the skin, this association has not been shown yet. In this report, a 25-year-old female patient with cutaneous lobular capillary hemangioma of the cheek induced by pregnancy is presented. The lesion was excised and lobular capillary hemangioma was given as diagnosis by histopathological evaluation. Estrogen receptor was weakly positive by immunohistochemical analysis. We suggest that elevated levels of estrogens during pregnancy may have an important role also on the development of cutaneous lobular capillary hemangiomas by direct hormonal action.
Laryngeal hemangioma in adults is a very rare condition. We report the case of a 41-year-old man with hemangioma of the left vocal cord. The literature on this rare occurrence is reviewed and the significance of the case discussed.
The role of reactive oxygen species in the pathogenesis of acute ethanol-induced gastric mucosal lesions and the effects of quercetin were evaluated in an experimental model. In addition, the effects of quercetin on gastric damage were evaluated histopathologically. Rats were divided into three groups as control rats, ethanol treated rats and ethanol+quercetin treated rats. Ethanol group was given a gastric gavage containing 1 ml of 80% ethanol (v/v) prepared in distilled water. Quercetin (200 mg/kg body wt.) was given by intragastric gavage 120 min before the administration of ethanol. Gastric tissue thiobarbituric acid reactive substance levels, carbonyl compounds, histamine levels and myeloperoxidase activities were found to be increased in ethanol treated rats and quercetin treatment reversed these increases. No statistically significant changes were found between all groups in catalase activity. The superoxide dismutase activity dropped significantly after ethanol treatment and quercetin treatment increased this enzyme activity. Gastric damage was confirmed histomorphometrically by significant increases in the number of mast cells and gastric erosions in ethanol treated rats. It was also confirmed that quercetin treatment significantly decreased the number of mast cells and reduced the area of gastric erosions. The results suggest that the gastroprotective effect of quercetin in this experimental model could be due to its antiperoxidative, antioxidant and antihistaminic effects.

Tubular apocrine adenoma is a very rare sweat gland tumor. In this report, a case of tubular apocrine adenoma in association with syringocystadenoma papilliferum on the scalp is presented. The stroma of the tubular apocrine adenoma consisted of numerous, young fibroblasts with mitotic activity. It was difficult to distinguish stromal cells and epithelial cells from each other in some areas. The characteristics and differences in histopathologic and immunohistochemical findings in these tumors are described.
We encountered Thornwaldt cysts in four patients (3 males, 1 female; age range 30 to 46 years). Three symptomatic patients underwent endoscopic surgery. No intervention was made in one asymptomatic patient. Cyst-related complications included bilateral middle ear effusion in one patient. Postoperatively, no symptoms or recurrences were observed in a mean follow-up period of 11 months. In the asymptomatic patient, the cyst size remained unchanged during eight-month follow-up.
A thirty-year-old male patient with bilateral second branchial cleft cysts is presented, in whom no association was found with any other congenital abnormality, in particular branchio-oto-renal syndrome. He had a complaint of painless swelling on both sides of the neck. Physical and radiological examinations showed bilateral branchial cleft cysts. A coexisting congenital syndrome could not be documented despite investigations including physical examination, blood biochemistry and complete blood count, audiologic tests, temporal bone computed tomography, and abdominal and renal ultrasonography. Surgical excision was performed on both sides with a three-week interval. Histopathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis. The postoperative period was uneventful, with no recurrence during a follow-up period of 12 months.
BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (LDN) is associated with prolonged warm ischemia, which could potentially increase oxidative stress in the graft. Because pneumoperitoneum (Pp) used to facilitate LDN impairs renal perfusion, it could augment the effects of warm ischemia. Our experimental, randomized, controlled study with blind outcome assessment is the first to address this possibility. METHODS: Wistar-Albino rats were randomized to 4 groups. Controls were subjected to a sham operation; the remainder were subjected to Pp with or without warm ischemia of differing durations. The kidneys were removed at the end of each experiment. The concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl, and sulfhydryl groups and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase were measured in renal samples as markers of oxidative stress. Renal samples were also evaluated histopathologically using light microscopy. RESULTS: Pp promoted oxidative stress in renal tissues, with an increase of MDA and protein carbonyls and a decrease in protein sulfhydryls and SOD activity. Warm ischemia exerted an additive effect on Pp-associated oxidative stress only when sustained for 10 minutes. These changes occurred in the absence of light-microscopic evidence of overt tissue damage. CONCLUSION: In an experimental model resembling LDN, Pp and 10 minutes of warm ischemia emerged as additive factors with respect to causing increased oxidative stress in the kidney. Because these effects imply subtle injury not only in the harvested kidneys of live donors but also in the kidneys the donors retain, avoiding Pp and warm ischemia above 5 minutes during LDN appears advisable.

In 2002, we reinvestigated a large synpolydactyly kindred first described in 1995. It was found to have expanded with an increase in number of homozygous offspring. These homozygotes had severe hypoplasia, with synpolydactyly of their hands and feet. We present the clinical, genetic, and surgical findings of this deformity and the histologic findings of the removed bones of the heterozygous and homozygous members. There were 125 affected individuals (113 heterozygotes and 12 homozygotes) of 245 members of the past five generations. We identified seven marriages in which both spouses were affected. Twelve offspring from these marriages had homozygote genetic patterns, hypoplastic synpolydactyly of the hands, and a distinctive foot deformity, with a prominent great toe and syndactylized hypoplastic minor toes. From clinical and surgical perspectives, their hand and foot deformities were different from those of their parents. We surgically treated both feet of four individuals with this deformity, which we called "homozygote foot synpolydactyly." Clinically, the deformity consisted of a supinated prominent great toe, hypoplastic and severely synpolydactylized minor toes, and secondary problems. Radiographically, the bones were underdeveloped, unshaped, and largely fused. Abundant cartilage covering the bones was observed surgically and histologically. Genetically, analysis of HOXD13 identified a 27-base pair duplication with a homozygote pattern. The foot deformity of the homozygotes was so distinctive and complicated that it should be considered a separate foot synpolydactyly type--homozygote foot synpolydactyly.
Nasolabial cysts are developmental swellings originating from the epithelial remnants of the nasolacrimal ductus. In this report we present two female patients (age 44 and 54 years) with nasolabial cysts. In both cases the leading complaints arose from cosmetic appearance. Surgical excision by sublabial approach was performed. Histopathological diagnoses were in agreement with the clinical diagnoses. The patients had an uneventful postoperative period and no recurrences were seen during a follow-up period of 12 months.
Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) is a rare benign endothelial proliferation that bears a remarkable resemblance to angiosarcoma. We report a case of cutaneous IPEH in the thumb of a seven-year old girl which was successfully treated with excision. The relevant literature is reviewed and histopathological features, differential diagnosis and natural history of the lesion are discussed.
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of Aquaporin 1 (AQP1) and AQP4 in polyp tissue. METHODS: Nasal polyps were obtained from 34 patients with nasal polyposis during endoscopic sinus surgery. Bullous middle turbinates with normal-appearing mucosa of 10 patients were used as controls. Expression of AQP1 and AQP4 water channels were determined by immunohistochemical methods. RESULTS: AQP1 has been found to be expressed in fibroblasts located in polyp tissue, especially in the subepithelial area, periphery of seromucous glands, and endothelial cells of venules. CONCLUSION: We have established a high expression of AQP1 water channels in nasal polyp tissue and have suggested two mechanisms to explain this finding. Increased AQP1 expression may be a cause or a consequence of edema formation. Thus, additional studies are needed to elucidate the true mechanism underlying this relationship.
