"Thread seal tape" (polytetrafluoroethylene) implanted in the subcutaneous tissue of rats.

"Thread seal tape" (Polytetrafluoroethylene [PTFE]) was placed in the dorsum of 20 rats for evaluation of the inflammatory reaction to it. The rats were killed 7, 14, 28, and 60 days after the surgical intervention, and the implant samples, together with adjacent tissues, were removed for histologic analysis. At clinical examination, the dorsum of the rat's skin presented no local inflammatory reaction. The histologic analysis showed decreasing inflammatory reaction with time that was almost absent 60 days after surgery. The authors concluded that the "thread seal tape" (PTFE) did not cause an inflammatory reaction when implanted in the subcutaneous tissue of rats.

Chin augmentation with conchal cartilage.

Profile enhancement most frequently involves mentoplasty. For this purpose, the author performs conchal grafts to the chin. A total of 28 women aged 15 to 76 years (mean age, 38.11 +/- 15.11 years) requested mentoplasty by itself or combined with rhinoplasty, rhytidoplasty, or submental lipoplasty. The conchal cartilage was harvested subperichondrally through a posterior 3-cm incision. The specimen measured 3 x 1 cm, which was sufficient to project the chin 2 to 3 mm. For 4 to 5 mm of projection, both cartilages were used. The graft was positioned under the periosteum and held with two 5-0 nylon sutures. In these cases, the conchal cartilage graft was a suitable option for chin augmentations up to 5 mm.

Vibroliposuction: a study of rate of aspiration.

Challenges in suction-assisted lipoplasty (SAL) along with ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty (UAL) include physical effort by the surgeon, surface irregularities and undulations, risk of perforations (SAL), risk of burns (UAL), and lengthy operative time. In this study of 74 patients, vibro-assisted liposuction (VAL) was evaluated by rate of aspiration. In this group, variables included diameter of the cannula, number of openings, and pressure of compressed air. Our findings suggest that operative time is decreased with a greater number of openings into the cannula and a higher air pressure.

Aesthetic correction of a hypertrophic sinus frontalis: a long-term follow-up evaluation and refinement of the method.

Two cases treated for hypertrophy of the frontal sinus are presented. In both patients, the excised frontal bone was inverted, and the resultant cavity was filled with either bone dust from the parietal region or Medpor. The first patient is shown with an excellent result after a follow-up period of 16 years. The second patient, who also achieved an excellent result, is presented after a follow-up period of 5 years. Using Medpor instead of bone dust resulted in the advantage that the operation could be performed with the patient under local anesthesia with sedation and prevention of an additional donor site. The use of Medpor has certain advantages over the use of hydroxyapatite, not least of which is its significant lower cost.
