Variational description of Mott insulators.

The Gutzwiller wave function for a strongly correlated model can, if supplemented with a long-range Jastrow factor, provide a proper variational description of Mott insulators, so far unavailable. We demonstrate this concept in the prototypical one-dimensional t-t(') Hubbard model, where at half-filling we reproduce all known phases, namely, the ordinary Mott undimerized insulator with power-law spin correlations at small t(')/t, the spin-gapped metal above a critical t(')/t and small U, and the dimerized Mott insulator at large repulsion.

Chiral spin liquid wave function and the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem.

We study a chiral spin liquid wave function defined as a Gutzwiller projected BCS state with a complex pairing function. After projection, spontaneous dimerization is found for any odd but finite number of chains, thus satisfying the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem, whereas for an even number of chains there is no dimerization. The two-dimensional thermodynamic limit is consistently reached for a large number of chains since the dimer order parameter vanishes in this limit. This property clearly supports the possibility of a spin liquid ground state in two dimensions with a gap to all physical excitations and with no broken translation symmetry.

Ising transition driven by frustration in a 2D classical model with continuous symmetry.

We study the thermal properties of the classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with both nearest (J1) and next-nearest (J2) exchange couplings on the square lattice by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We show that, for J2/J1>1/2, thermal fluctuations give rise to an effective Z2 symmetry leading to a finite-temperature phase transition. We provide strong numerical evidence that this transition is in the 2D Ising universality class, and that T(c)-->0 with an infinite slope when J2/J1-->1/2.

Tetramerization of a frustrated spin-1/2 chain.

We investigate a model of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain coupled to adiabatic phonons with a general form of magnetoelastic coupling. For large enough frustration and lattice coupling, a new tetramerized phase with three different bond lengths is found. We argue that the zigzag spin-1/2 chain LiV2O5 might be a good candidate to observe such a phase.

Peierls-like transition induced by frustration in a two-dimensional antiferromagnet.

We show that the introduction of frustration into the spin- 1/2 two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a square lattice via a next-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction can lead to a Peierls-like transition, from a tetragonal to an orthorhombic phase, when the spins are coupled to adiabatic phonons. The two different orthorhombic ground states define an Ising order parameter, which is expected to lead to a finite temperature transition. Implications for Li(2)VOSiO(4), the first realization of that model, will be discussed.
