Toward the complete prediction of the 1H and 13C NMR spectra of complex organic molecules by DFT methods: application to natural substances.

The NMR parameters (1H and 13C chemical shifts and coupling constants) for a series of naturally occurring molecules have been calculated mostly with DFT methods, and their spectra compared with available experimental ones. The comparison includes strychnine as a test case, as well as some examples of recently isolated natural products (corianlactone, daphnipaxinin, boletunone B) featuring unusual and/or crowded structures and, in the case of boletunone B, being the subject of a recent revision. Whenever experimental spectra were obtained in polar solvents, the calculation of NMR parameters was also carried out with the Integral Equation-Formalism Polarizable Continuum Model (IEF-PCM) continuum method. The computed results generally show a good agreement with experiment, as judged not only by statistical parameters but also by visual comparison of line spectra. The origin of the remaining discrepancies is attributed to the incomplete modeling of conformational and specific solvent effects.

Selective J-resolved spectra: a double pulsed field gradient spin-echo approach.

A simple method to obtain selective J-resolved spectra is presented, which relies on the refocusing properties of double pulsed field gradient spin-echoes and provides unambiguous assignment of the measured coupling constants. The proposed examples show how this method is of general applicability, and requires no more than a simple optimization strategy to produce artifact-free spectra. Examples of application include the determination of a small, long-range coupling constant (0.7 Hz) in trans-retinal and Halpha couplings in a tripeptide.

Nuclear spin relaxation driven by intermolecular dipolar interactions: the role of solute-solvent pair correlations in the modeling of spectral density functions.

Nuclear spin relaxation provides useful information related to the dynamics of molecular systems. When relaxation is driven by intermolecular dipolar interactions, the relevant spectral density functions (SDFs) also have significant contributions, in principle, from distant spins all over the dynamic range typically probed by NMR experiments such as NOESY. In this work, we investigate the intermolecular dipolar spin relaxation as driven by the relative diffusion of solvent and solute molecules taking place under a central force field, and we examine the relevant implications for (preferential) solvation studies. For this purpose, we evaluate the SDFs by employing a numerical approach based on spatial discretization of the time-propagation equation, and we supply an analytical solution for the simplest case of a steplike mean-field potential. Several situations related to different solute-solvent pair correlation functions are examined in terms of static/dynamic effects and relaxation modes, and some conclusions are drawn about the interpretation of NOE measurements. While we confirm previous results concerning the spoiling effect of long-range spins (Halle, B. J. Chem. Phys. 2003, 119, 12372), we also show that SDFs are sufficiently sensitive to pair correlation functions that useful, yet rather complicated, inferences can be made on the nature of the solvation shell.

The effect of the anion on the physical properties of trihalide-based N,N-dialkylimidazolium ionic liquids.

Low viscosity, high density trihalide-based 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium ionic liquids have been prepared and characterised. Key physical properties (density, conductivity, melting point, refractive index, surface tension and diffusion coefficient) of the ionic liquids have been determined and are compared with those of other 1,3-dialkylimidazolium molten salts. The relationship between anion identity and the physical properties of the ionic liquids under investigation is discussed.

Detecting intermolecular NOEs by means of a novel DPFGSE pulse sequence. Application to the solvation of carbohydrates in binary mixtures.

We present a pulse sequence based on solute-to-solvent NOE enhancement and aimed at the detection of intermolecular NOE's. Thus, a W3 pulse cluster is used to selectively filter the solvent signals in a DPFGSE sequence. The sequence has been tested on a sample of glucose dissolved in two binary aqueous mixtures (water-acetonitrile and water-DMSO). We show how the resulting enhancements may derive from intermolecular cross-relaxation or, in the water-DMSO sample, also from chemical exchange. In each case, a quantitative interpretation of the data is also supplied, both in terms of local enrichment in one specific solvent (preferential solvation), and by means of a kinetic model for a two-site chemical exchange.
