Zn(II)-induced ground-state pi-deconjugation and excited-state electron transfer in N,N-bis(2-pyridyl)amino-substituted arenes.

The synthesis and X-ray crystal structures of two N,N-bis(2-pyridyl)amino (dpa)-substituted aromatic systems (Ar-dpa) 1 (Ar = 4,4'-disubstituted trans-stilbene) and 2 (Ar = 1,4-disubstituted benzene) and their ZnCl(2) complexes (1/ZnCl(2) and 2/ZnCl(2)) are reported. The fluoroionophoric behavior of 1-2 in response to Zn(II) in acetonitrile also has been investigated. In addition, compound 3DPA has been prepared and served as a pi-deconjugated model for 1DPA. The observed crystal structures for 1/ZnCl(2) and 2/ZnCl(2) could be divided into two distinct types, the planar and the twisted forms, depending on the aryl-dpa (C(ph)-NC(3)) dihedral angle. The twisted form is more favorable for these complexes unless the arene has a strong "push-pull" character. Nonetheless, the degree of pi-conjugation between the N-pyridyl and the N-aryl group is reduced in both complex forms when compared with the free ligands. Such a Zn(II)-induced pi-deconjugation not only directly affects the internal charge transfer (ICT) fluorescence of the dpa-substituted stilbenes but also facilitates the occurrence of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) from the stilbene donor to the dpa/Zn(II) acceptor. The PET process is particularly important in accounting for the observed Zn(II)-induced fluorescence quenching for 1DPA as well as 3DPA.

Cs2Pd3(P2O7)2 and Cs2Pd3(As2O7)2: a 3D palladium phosphate with a tunnel structure and a 2D palladium arsenate containing strings of palladium atoms.

Cs(2)Pd(3)(P(2)O(7))(2) (1) and Cs(2)Pd(3)(As(2)O(7))(2) (2) have been synthesized by molten flux reactions and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure of 1 consists of discrete Pd(II)O(4) squares which are linked by P(2)O(7) groups via corner-sharing to generate a 3D framework containing 12-ring channels in which Cs(+) cations are located. Compound 2 adopts a 2D layer structure with the interlayer space filled with Cs(+) cations. Within a layer there are PdO(4) squares and As(2)O(7) groups fused together via corner-sharing. Adjacent layers are stacked such that strings of Pd atoms are formed. The PdO(4) squares show eclipsed and staggered stacks with alternate short and long Pd...Pd distances. The two compounds adopt considerably different structures although they have the same general formula: Cs(2)Pd(3)(X(2)O(7))(2). Compound 2 is the first palladium arsenate reported. Crystal data for 1: orthorhombic, space group Cmc2(1) (No. 36), a = 7.6061(4) A, b = 14.2820(7) A, c = 14.1840(7) A, and Z = 4. Crystal data for 2: tetragonal, space group P4/n (No. 85), a = 16.251(1) A, c = 5.9681(5) A, and Z = 4.

A zeolitic organo-metallophosphate hybrid material with bimodal porosity.

The first metal carboxylatophosphate, NTHU-2, contains inorganic ZnHPO4 layers linked by BDC units (BDC = 1,4-benzene dicarboxylate or terephthalic anion); the three-dimensional anionic framework has large pores with the smallest diameter being 1.36 nm; N2 sorption isotherms reveal both micro- and mesoporosity; the new material is photoluminescent and disassembles in water wherein the discharged organic fragments form mixed crystals.

Crystal structure of (2,2'-bipyridine-N,N)(2,2',2''-triaminotriethylamine-N,N',N'',N''')nickel(II) diperchlorate.

An X-ray structure determination shows that the Ni(II) ion is a distorted six-coordinated octahedron by four nitrogen atoms of the tetradentate tren ligand constituting the equatorial square base, and by two nitrogen atoms of the bidentate bpy ligand in a cis position. The two six-membered rings of bpy are coplanar and almost pararell. The tetradentate ligand consists of three five-membered chelate rings in gauche coformations. The Ni-N(tren) bond lengths of this complex are almost equivalent to the reported values.

Crystal structure of (1,10-phenanthroline-N,N')(1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-N,N',N",N"')nickel(II) diperchlorate.

The crystal structure of the title compound, [Ni(C8H20N4)(C12H8N2)](ClO4)2, has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The Ni(II) ion is six coordinated with four nitrogen atoms of the tetradentate macrocyclic ligand and two nitrogen atoms of the bidentate ligand in a distorted octahedron geometry. The folded tetradentate macrocyclic ligand adopts a configuration having four five-membered chelate rings in distorted eclipsed conformations. The four hydrogen atoms of the amine groups of the macrocyclic ligand are on the same side towards the bidentate ligand.

Crystal structure of bromo(2,2':6',2"-terpyridine)(2-(phenylazo)-pyridine)ruthenium(II) tetrafluoroborate.

The title compound, C26H20N6BrRu(BF4), crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group P2(1)/n and consists of discrete complex units. The Ru(II) ion is octahedrally coordinated to one 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine (tpy), one 2-(phenylazo)pyridine (azpy) and a Br atom in trans-axial position at a distance of 2.547(5)A. The shorter Ru-N (azo) distance (1.960(3)A) than the Ru-N(py) distance (2.061(3)A) signifies a strong pi-backbonding, which leads to a longer, N=N (azo) bond (1.304(4)A).
