Data integration and genomic medicine.

Genomic medicine aims to revolutionize health care by applying our growing understanding of the molecular basis of disease. Research in this arena is data intensive, which means data sets are large and highly heterogeneous. To create knowledge from data, researchers must integrate these large and diverse data sets. This presents daunting informatic challenges such as representation of data that is suitable for computational inference (knowledge representation), and linking heterogeneous data sets (data integration). Fortunately, many of these challenges can be classified as data integration problems, and technologies exist in the area of data integration that may be applied to these challenges. In this paper, we discuss the opportunities of genomic medicine as well as identify the informatics challenges in this domain. We also review concepts and methodologies in the field of data integration. These data integration concepts and methodologies are then aligned with informatics challenges in genomic medicine and presented as potential solutions. We conclude this paper with challenges still not addressed in genomic medicine and gaps that remain in data integration research to facilitate genomic medicine.

Integrating medical and genomic data: a successful example for rare diseases.

The recent advances on genomics and proteomics research bring up a significant grow on the information that is publicly available. However, navigating through genetic and bioinformatics databases can be a too complex and unproductive task for a primary care physician. In this paper we present diseasecard, a web portal for rare disease that provides transparently to the user a virtually integration of distributed and heterogeneous information.

Structuring European biomedical informatics to support individualized healthcare: current issues and future trends.

Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics are disciplines that up to now have followed separate development with few contacts and synergies between them in Europe. The elucidation of the human genome has however evidenced the need and the possibilities for a strong synergy between the two. Classical epidemiological and clinical research on the one hand, and genomic research on the other, separately considered, are no longer enough for advancing in the so-called genomic medicine, and a new integrative approach is required. Biomedical Informatics is the emerging discipline that aims to put these two worlds together so that the discovery and creation of novel diagnostic and therapeutic methods is fostered. On the basis of the results of the European Commission-funded BIOINFOMED Study, an INFOBIOMED Network of Excellence has been recently constituted with the main objective of setting a durable structure for the described collaborative approach at a European level. Initially formed by fifteen renowned European organisations, the main objective of the INFOBIOMED network is therefore to enable the reinforcement of European BMI as an integrative discipline.
