Composite particles of polyethylene @ silica.

Polyethylene (PE) and silica are perhaps the simplest and most common organic and inorganic polymers, respectively. We describe, for the first time, a physically interpenetrating nanocomposite between these two elementary polymers. While polymer-silica composites are well known, the nanometric physical blending of PE and silica has remained a challenge. A method for the preparation of such materials, which is based on the entrapment of dissolved PE in a polymerizing tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) system, has been developed. Specifically, the preparation of submicron particles of low-density PE@silica and high-density PE@silica is detailed, which is based on carrying out a silica sol-gel polycondensation process within emulsion droplets of TEOS dissolved PE, at elevated temperatures. The key to the successful preparation of this new composite has been the identification of a surfactant, PE-b-PEG, that is capable of stabilizing the emulsion and promoting the dissolution of the PE. A mechanism for the formation of the particles as well as their inner structure are proposed, based on a large battery of analyses, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopies (SEM), surface area and porosity analyses, various thermal analyses including thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA/DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements and solid-state NMR spectroscopy.

Selective protein adsorption property and characterization of nano-crystalline zinc-containing hydroxyapatite.

Nano-crystalline Zn-containing hydroxyapatite (ZnHAp) was prepared by the wet-chemical method and the selective adsorption of essential proteins was examined, taking bovine serum albumin (BSA) and pathogenic protein such as beta(2)-microglobulin (beta(2)-MG) as model proteins. Transmission electron microscopy observation and X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the increase of Zn content led to smaller crystallites and their specific surface area of ZnHAps increased with increasing Zn content, accordingly. Furthermore, the amounts of BSA adsorption on ZnHAp particles decreased with increasing Zn content in spite of the increase in the specific surface area. It is thus concluded that nano-crystalline ZnHAps had a highly selective adsorption property with regard to beta(2)-MG.

Combined ab initio computational and experimental multinuclear solid-state magnetic resonance study of phenylphosphonic acid.

1H, 13C, 17O and 31P NMR parameters, including chemical shift tensors and quadrupolar parameters for 17O, were calculated for phenylphosphonic acid, C6H5PO(OH)2, under periodic boundary conditions. The results are in very good agreement with experimental data and permit the unambiguous assignment of all the sites present in the structure. In particular, the 17O NMR parameters of the P=O and P-OH environments were precisely determined, which should help in the characterization of the bonding mode of phosphonate molecules in hybrid solids. Moreover, the effect of intermolecular interactions on the NMR parameters were investigated by comparing the results of the calculations in the crystal and in an isolated molecule of phenylphosphonic acid.

Solid state effects in the IR spectrum of octahydridosilasesquioxane.

Infrared spectrum of Octahydridosilasesquioxane, in the solid state, is reported and analyzed to show the presence of significant solid state effects. This is in marked contrast with the reported Raman spectroscopic studies of this compound in the solid state where no evidence for such a proliferation of these effects were found. It is found that the normal modes with radial motion of the atoms in their normal coordinate are distinguishable from other vibrations by the distinct correlations between the band intensity and the solid state splitting observed in the IR spectrum. This new insight suggests an interchange of the literature assignments of the two modes nu27 and nu29 in the IR spectrum and a different origin to the doublet of bands in the Raman spectrum at 883 and 897 cm(-1).

Phase transformation during cubic mesostructured silica film formation.

The structural evolution taking place during CTAB/TEOS based solvent evaporation-induced thin film formation has been followed by in-situ time-resolved SAXS; this shows that the final Pm3n cubic structure is formed via the formation of lamellar and hexagonal intermediate structures within the water rich evaporation regime.

Solid state (47,49)Ti, (87)Sr and (137)Ba NMR characterisation of mixed barium/strontium titanate perovskites.

Solid state (47,49)Ti, (137)Ba, (87)Sr NMR spectra have been recorded on BaxSrl-xTiO3 (0 </= x </=1) perovskite samples prepared by the powder sintering method. Multinuclear solid state NMR shows great potential for characterising such systems since the quadrupolar parameters are very sensitive to any geometric deformation around the studied nucleus. (47,49)Ti NMR powder lineshapes appear strongly influenced by the presence of even a small amount of barium (or strontium) in the coordination second sphere of the probed titanium site: substitution of strontium by barium induces the broadening of the peaks, due to quadrupolar effects, while the isotropic chemical shift increases. (137)Ba NMR spectra exhibit a distribution of the quadrupolar interaction, that could be tentatively quantified, CQ increasing with the amount of strontium. Preliminary results were also obtained on (87)Sr NMR showing behaviour comparable to (137)Ba NMR, i.e. a broadening of the peaks due to an increasing quadrupolar interaction with the amount of barium distorting the environment of the strontium sites.
