Ferromagnetic coupling in the three-dimensional malonato-bridged gadoliniumIII complex [Gd2(mal)3(H2O)6] (H2mal = malonic acid).

The novel gadolinium(III) complex of formula [Gd(2)(mal)(3)(H(2)O)(6)] (1) (H(2)mal = 1,3-propanedioic acid) has been prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. Crystal data for 1: monoclinic, space group I2/a, a = 11.1064(10) A, b = 12.2524(10) A, c =13.6098(2) A, beta = 92.925(10) degrees, U = 1849.5(3) A(3), Z = 4. Compound 1 is a three-dimensional network made up of malonate-bridged gadolinium(III) ions where the malonate exhibits two bridging modes, eta(5)-bidentate + unidentate and eta(3):eta(3) + bis(unidentate). The gadolinium atom is nine-coordinate with three water molecules and six malonate oxygen atoms from three malonate ligands forming a distorted monocapped square antiprism. The shortest metal-metal separations are 4.2763(3) A [through the oxo-carboxylate bridge] and 6.541(3) A [through the carboxylate in the anti-syn coordination mode]. The value of the angle at the oxo-carboxylate atom is 116.8(2) degrees. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal the occurrence of a significant ferromagnetic interaction through the oxo-carboxylate pathway (J = +0.048(1) cm(-1), H = -JS(Gd(1)) x S(Gd(1a))).

Hydrothermal syntheses, crystal structures, and properties of two-dimensional homo- and heterometallic cyanide-bridged complexes: [Cu2(CN)2(bpym)] and [Fe(bipy)2(CN)4Cu2] (bpym = 2,2'-bipyrimidine, bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine).

The hydrothermal reaction of K(3)[Fe(CN)(6)], CuCl(2), and 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) resulted in the formation of a 2D cyanide-bridged heterobimetallic Fe(II)-Cu(I) complex, [Fe(bipy)(2)(CN)(4)Cu(2)], 1. Working in the same conditions, but using 2,2'-bipyrimidine (bpym) instead of bipy and methanol as solvent, we obtained the homometallic Cu(I) complex [Cu(2)(CN)(2)(bpym)](2), 2. The structure of 1 consists of cyanide-bridged Fe(II)-Cu(I) layers, constructed from alternately fused 6 (Fe(2)Cu(4)) and 10 (Fe(2)Cu(8)) metal-membered centrosymmetric rings, in which copper(I) and iron(II) ions exhibit distorted trigonal planar and octahedral cooordination environments, respectively. The formation of 1 can be explained by assuming that, under high pressure and temperature, iron(III) and copper(II) ions are reduced with the simultaneous and/or subsequent substitution of four cyanide ligands by two bipy molecules in the ferricyanide anions. It is interesting to note that 1 is the first cyanide-bridged heterobimetallic complex prepared by solvothermal methods. The structure of 2 consists of neutral 2D honeycomb layers constructed from fused Cu(6)(CN)(4)(bpym)(2) rings, in which copper(I) atoms exhibit distorted tetrahedral geometry. The isolation of 1 and 2, by using K(3)[Fe(CN)(6)] as starting material, demonstrates that hydrothermal chemistry can be used not only to prepare homometallic materials but also to prepare cyanide-bridged bimetallic materials. The temperature dependence of chi(M)T and Mössbauer measurements for 1 reveal the existence of a high spin <--> low spin equilibrium involving the Fe(II) ions.

Magnetic studies on hexaiodorhenate(IV) salts of univalent cations. Spin canting and magnetic ordering in K2[ReI6] with Tc = 24 K.

The ionic salts of rhenium(IV) of formula (Cat)(2)[ReI(6)] with Cat = Li(+) (1), Na(+) (2), K(+) (3), Rb(+) (4), Cs(+) (5), NH(4)(+) (6), and AsPh(4)(+) (7) [AsPh(4)(+) = tetraphenylarsonium cation] have been synthesized, and the structures of two of them (namely, 3 and 6) were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 3 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group Pn, with a = 7.815(1) A, b = 7.874(1) A, c = 11.335(1) A, beta = 90.38(1) degrees, and Z = 2 whereas 6 crystallizes in the tetragonal system, space group P4/mnc, with a = 7.881(1) A, b = 7.881(1) A, c = 11.474(2) A, and Z = 2. The structures of 3 and 6 are made up of discrete [ReI(6)](2)(-) anions and K(+) (3) or NH(4)(+) (6) cations held together by electrostatic forces (3 and 6) and N-H.I hydrogen bonds (6). The rhenium(IV) cation in 3 and 6 is surrounded by six iodide ligands in an octahedral environment with the Re-I bond lengths varying in a very narrow range [2.704(3)-2.738(3) and 2.716(1)-2.722(2) A for 3 and 6, respectively]. The [ReI(6)](2)(-) anions in 6 describe a tetragonally distorted body-centered cubic structure. In 3, the arrangement of these units is similar but more distorted. The different arrangement of the anions in 3 and 6 accounts for the centrosymmetric (6) and non-centrosymmetric (3) structures observed. The magnetic properties of 1-7 were investigated in the temperature range 2.0-300 K. The magnetic behavior of 7 is that of a magnetically diluted Re(IV) complex with a large value of the zero-field splitting of the ground level (|2D| = 49.8 cm(-)(1)) whereas those of 1, 2, and 4-6 are typical of antiferromagnetically coupled systems with susceptibility maxima at 28 (1), 27 (2), 21 (4), 16 (5), and 20 K (6). In the case of compound 3, its magnetic behavior in the high-temperature range is parallel to that observed in the parent salts but below 24 K it is a weak ferromagnet with a canting angle of ca. 1.2 degrees.

A new type of anionic metal dicyanamide extended networks through [Cu(N4-macrocycle)]2+ cation templation. Structure and magnetic properties.

Two isomorphous anionic metal dicyanamide extended systems [Cu(pCTH)][M(dca)(4)] (M = Mn(II), Co(II); dca = dicyanamide; pCTH = 5,7,7,12,14,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetrazacyclotetradecane-4,11-diene) have been prepared through [Cu(pCTH)](2+) templation and characterized by X-ray crystallography and magnetic measurements. In these complexes, the [M(dca)(4)](2)(-) anions form 2D (4,4) distorted square-gridlike sheets in which each elongated octahedral M(N(dca))(6) metal center is connected to four neighboring ones through single dicyanamide bridges in equatorial positions. [Cu(pCTH)](2+) cations lie between the sheets and display weak bonding interactions with the axial dicyanamide ligands on the M centers of two neighboring [M(dca)(4)](n)()(2)(n)()(-) sheets, thus leading to a 3D heterometallic network. Variable-temperature magnetic measurements reveal weak antiferromagnetic interactions between metal centers across mu(1,5)-dicyanamide bridging ligands. For the cobalt(II) compound, the experimental data for T > 30 K match well with the calculated curve by taking into consideration the spin-orbit coupling effect for the (4)T(1g) ground state of the cobalt(II) and an axial distortion of the octahedral geometry. No long-range magnetic order was observed in these compounds above 2 K.

Heterobimetallic oxalato-bridged M(II)Re(IV) complexes (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni): synthesis, crystal structure, and magnetic properties.

Four rhenium(IV)-M(II) bimetallic complexes of formula [ReCl(4)(mu-ox)M(dmphen)(2)].CH(3)CN with M = Mn (1), Fe (2), Co (3), and Ni (4) (ox = oxalate anion, dmphen = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) have been synthesized and the crystal structures of 1 and 3 determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1 and 3 are isostructural and crystallize in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/c, with a = 16.008(4) A, b = 12.729(2) A, c = 18.909(5) A, beta = 112.70(2) degrees, and Z = 4 for 1 and a = 15.998(4) A, b = 12.665(2) A, c = 18.693(5) A, beta = 112.33(2) degrees, and Z = 4, for 3. The structure of 1 and 3 is made up of neutral [ReCl(4)(mu-ox)M(dmphen)(2)] bimetallic units (M = Mn (1), Co (3)) and acetonitrile molecules of crystallization. M(II) and Re(IV) metal ions exhibit distorted octahedral coordination geometries being bridged by a bis(bidentate) oxalato ligand. The magnetic behavior of 1-4 has been investigated over the temperature range 2.0-300 K. A very weak antiferromagnetic coupling between Re(IV) and Mn(II) occurs in 1 (J = -0.1 cm(-)(1)), whereas a significant ferromagnetic interaction between Re(IV) and M(II) is observed in 2-4 [J = +2.8 (2), +5.2 (3), and +5.9 cm(-)(1) (4)].

Synthesis and characterization of heterodinuclear Ln(3+)-Fe3+ and Ln(3+)-Co3+ complexes, bridged by cyanide ligand (Ln3+ = lanthanide ions). Nature of the magnetic interaction in the Ln(3+)-Fe3+ complexes.

The reaction of Ln(NO3)3.aq with K3[Fe(CN)6] or K3[Co(CN)6] in N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) led to 25 heterodinuclear [Ln(DMF)4(H2O)3(mu-CN)Fe(CN)5].nH2O and [Ln(DMF)4(H2O)3(mu-CN)Co(CN)5].nH2O complexes (with Ln = all the lanthanide(III) ions, except promethium and lutetium). Five complexes (Pr(3+)-Fe3+), (Tm(3+)-Fe3+), (Ce(3+)-Co3+), (Sm(3+)-Co3+), and (Yb(3+)-Co3+) have been structurally characterized; they crystallize in the equivalent monoclinic space groups P21/c or P21/n. Structural studies of these two families show that they are isomorphous. This relationship in conjunction with the diamagnetism of the Co3+ allows an approximation to the nature of coupling between the iron(III) and the lanthanide(III) ions in the [Ln(DMF)4(H2O)3(mu-CN)Fe(CN)5].nH2O complexes. The Ln(3+)-Fe3+ interaction is antiferromagnetic for Ln = Ce, Nd, Gd, and Dy and ferromagnetic for Ln = Tb, Ho, and Tm. For Ln = Pr, Eu, Er, Sm, and Yb, there is no sign of any significant interaction. The isotropic nature of Gd3+ helps to evaluate the value of the exchange interaction.

Aurophilicity-coordination interplay in the design of cyano-bridged nickel(II)-Gold(I) bimetallic assemblies: structural and computational studies of the gold(I)-gold(I) interactions.

Two polymorphic cyano-bridged Au(I)-Ni(II) bimetallic complexes of formulas [Ni(en)2Au(CN)2][Au(CN)2] (1) and [Ni(en)2[Au(CN)2]2] (2) have been prepared from the 1:2 reaction between [Au(CN)2]- and either [Ni(en)2Cl2]Cl or [Ni(en)3]Cl2.2H2O, respectively. The structure of 1 consists of polymeric cationic chains of alternating [Au(CN)2]- and [Ni(en)2]2+ units running along the a axis and [Au(CN)2]- anions lying between the chains. The noncoordinated dicyanoaurate anions are aligned perpendicular to the ac plane and involved in aurophilic interactions with the bridging dicyanoaurate groups, ultimately leading to a 2D bimetallic grid. The structure of 2 consists of trinuclear molecules made of two [Au(CN)2]- anions linked to [Ni(en)2]2+ unit in trans configuration. Trinuclear units are joined by aurophilic interactions to form 1D zigzag chains. The magnetic properties of these compounds are strongly dominated by the local anisotropy of the octahedral Ni(II) ions, thus indicating that the magnetic exchange interaction mediated by dicyanoaurate bridging groups, if it exists, is very weak. To get insight into the electronic properties of the inter- and intramolecular interactions of the [Au(CN)2]- building blocks, the structures of different aggregates of dicyanogold units were optimized and then analyzed by making use of atoms-in-molecules (AIM) theory. Moreover, bond indices were calculated by methods based upon nonlinear population analysis.

Ferromagnetic coupling between low- and high-spin iron(III) ions in the tetranuclear complex fac-[[FeIII[HB(pz)3](CN)2(mu-CN)]3FeIII(H2O)3]* 6H2O ([HB(pz)3]- = hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate).

The novel mononuclear PPh4-fac-[FeIII[HB(pz)3](CN)3]*H2O (1) [PPh4+= tetraphenylphosphonium cation; (HB(pz)3)- = hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate] and tetranuclear fac-[[FeIII[HB(pz)3](CN)2(mu-CN)]3FeIII(H2O)3]*6H2O (2) have been prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. Crystal data for compound 1: monoclinic, space group P21/c, a = 9.575(3) A, b = 21.984(4) A, c = 16.863(3) A, beta = 100.34(2) degrees, U = 3486(1) A3, Z = 4. Crystal data for compound 2: orthorhombic, space group Pnam, a = 14.084(3) A, b = 14.799(4) A, c = 25.725(5) A, U = 5362(2) A3, Z = 4. Compound 1 is a low-spin iron(III) compound with three cyanide ligands in fac arrangement and a tridentate pyrazolylborate ligand building a distorted octahedral environment around the iron atom. Compound 2 is the first example of a molecular species containing three peripheral low-spin iron(III) ions linked to a central high-spin iron(III) cation by single cyanide bridges, the anion of 1 acting as a monodentate ligand in 2. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of 2 reveal the occurrence of a significant ferromagnetic coupling between the three peripheral low-spin iron(III) centers and the central high-spin iron(III) ion cations leading to a low-lying nonet spin state.

Cyclic trinuclear and chain of cyclic trinuclear copper(II) complexes containing a pyramidal Cu(3)O(H) core. Crystal structures and magnetic properties of [Cu(3)(mu(3)-OH)(aaat)(3)(H(2)O)(3)](NO(3))(2).H(2)O [aaat = 3-acetylamino-5-amino-1,2,4-triazolate] and ([Cu(3)(mu(3)-OH)(aat)(3)(mu(3)-SO(4))].6H(2)O)(n) [aat = 3-acetylamino-1,2,4-triazolate]: new cases of spin-frustrated systems.

New copper(II) complexes of the cyclic trinuclear type with 1,2,4-triazole ligands, [Cu(3)(mu(3)-OH)(aaat)(3)(H(2)O)(3)](NO(3))(2).H(2)O [Haaat = 3-acetylamino-5-amino-1,2,4-triazole] (1) and ([Cu(3)(mu(3)-OH)(aat)(3)(mu(3)-SO(4))].6H(2)O)(n) [Haat = 3-acetylamino-1,2,4-triazole] (2), have been prepared and characterized by X-ray crystallography and magnetic measurements. Compound 1, the first reported with the ligand (H)aaat, consists of discrete trinuclear cations, associated NO(3)(-) anions and lattice water molecules. Compound 2 consists of unusual chains of trinuclear units with a tridentate sulfato group linking the trimeric units and water molecules stabilizing the crystal lattice. In both complexes, 1 and 2, the trinuclear [Cu(3)(OH)L(3)] unit contains a pyramidal Cu(3)-mu(3)OH core, and an almost flat Cu(3)N(6) ring formed by the N,N-bridging triazolato groups. The Cu...Cu' intratrimeric distances are 3.35-3.37-3.39 A in 1 and 3.34-3.34-3.36 A in 2. The copper atoms are five-coordinated with a distorted square-pyramidal geometry. Magnetic measurements have been performed in the 1.9-300 K temperature range. In the high-temperature region (T > 90 K), experimental data could be satisfactorily reproduced by using an isotropic exchange model, H = -J(S(1)S(2) + S(2)S(3) + S(1)S(3)), with J = -194.6 cm(-1) and g = 2.08 for 1, and J = -185.1 cm(-1) and g = 2.10 for 2. The magnitude of the antiferromagnetic exchange in both complexes is discussed on the basis of their structural features by comparison with reported N,N-pheripherically bridged trinuclear systems. In order to fit the experimental magnetic data at low temperature, an antisymmetric exchange term, H(AS) = G(S(1)xS(2) + S(2)xS(3) + S(1)xS(3)), had to be introduced, with G = 27.8 (1) and 31.0 (2) cm(-1). Crystal data: C(12)H(27)Cu(3)N(17)O(14) (1) (MW = 824.13) crystallizes in the triclinic space group, P(-)1, Z = 2, with the cell dimensions a = 8.852(2) A, b = 11.491(3) A, c = 15.404(3) A, alpha = 70.43(3) degrees, beta = 75.11(2) degrees, gamma = 88.43(2) degrees, and V = 1423.8(5) A(3), D(calcd) = 1.922 g cm(-)(3); the final agreement values were R1 = 0.0822 and wR2 = 0.2300 for 4989 unique reflections. C(12)H(28)Cu(3)N(12)O(14)S (2) (MW = 787.14) crystallizes in the triclinic space group, P(-)1, Z = 2, with the cell dimensions a = 7.146(6) A, b = 14.26(1) A, c = 15.35(2) A, alpha = 109.0(9) degrees, beta = 93.6(9) degrees, gamma = 99.5(7) degrees, and V = 1448(2) A(3), D(calcd) = 1.806 g cm(-3); the final agreement values were R1 = 0.0628 and wR2 = 0.1571 for 3997 "observed" reflections.

Architecture dependence on the steric constrains of the ligand in cyano-bridged copper(I) and copper(II)-copper(I) mixed-valence polymer compounds containing diamines: crystal structures and spectroscopic and magnetic properties.

A family of cyano-bridged copper(II)-copper(I) mixed-valence polymers containing diamine ligands of formula [Cu(pn)(2)][Cu(2)(CN)(4)] (1, pn = 1,2-propanediamine), [Cu(2)(CN)(3)(dmen)] (2, dmen = N,N-dimethylethylenediamine), and [Cu(3)(CN)(4)(tmen)] (3, tmen = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine) have been prepared with the aim of analyzing how their architecture may be affected by steric constraints imposed by the diamine ligands. In the absence of diamine and with use of the voluminous NEt(4)(+) cation, the copper(I) polymer [NEt(4)][Cu(2)(CN)(3)] (4) forms. The structure of 1 consists of a three-dimensional diamond-related anionic framework host, [Cu(2)(CN)(4)](2-), and enclathrated [Cu(pn)(2)](2+) cations. The structure of 2 is made of neutral corrugated sheets constructed from fused 18-member nonplanar rings, which contain three equivalent copper(I) and three equivalent copper(II) centers bridged by cyanide groups in an alternative form. The 3D structure of 3 consists of interconnected stair-like double chains built from fused 18-member rings, which adopt a chairlike conformation. Each ring is constructed from two distorted trigonal planar Cu(I) centers, two bent seemingly two-coordinated Cu(I) centers, and two pentacoordinated Cu(II) atoms. The structure 4 is made of planar anionic layers [Cu(2)(CN)(3)](n)(n-) lying on mirror planes and NEt(4)(+) cations intercalated between the anionic layers. From the X-ray structural results and calculations based upon DFT theory some conclusions are drawn on the structure-steric factors correlation in these compounds. Compound 1 exhibits very weak luminescence at 77 K with a maximum in the emission spectrum at 520 nm, whereas compound 4 shows an intense luminescence at room temperature with a maximum in the emission spectrum at 371 nm. Polymers 2 and 3 exhibit weak antiferromagnetic magnetic exchange interactions with J = -0.065(3) and -2.739(5) cm(-1), respectively. This behavior have been justified on the basis of the sum of two contributions: one arising from the pure ground-state configuration and the other one from the charge-transfer configuration Cu(I)-CN-Cu(II)-CN-Cu(II) that mixes with the ground-state configuration.

Novel chiral three-dimensional iron(III) compound exhibiting magnetic ordering at T(c) = 40 K.

The preparation and crystal structure determination of the iron(III) compound of formula [(NH(4))(2)[Fe(2)O(ox)(2)Cl(2)].2H(2)O](n) (1) (ox = oxalate dianion) are reported here. Complex 1 crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group Fdd2, with a = 14.956(7) A, b = 23.671(9) A, c = 9.026(4) A, and Z = 8. The structure of complex 1 consists of the chiral anionic three-dimensional network [Fe(2)O(ox)(2)Cl(2)](2-) where the iron(III) ions are connected by single oxo and bisbidentate oxalato groups. The metal-metal separations through these bridging ligands are 3.384(2) and 5.496(2) A, respectively. Ammonium cations and crystallization water molecules are located in the helical pseudohexagonal tunnels defined by iron atoms. The longest iron-iron distance in the pseudohexagonal tunnel is 15.778(2) A whereas the shortest one is 8.734(2) A. The iron atoms are hexacoordinated: a terminal chloro ligand and five oxygen atoms, that of the oxo group and four from two cis coordinated oxalate ligands, build a distorted octahedral environment around the metal atom. The Fe-O(oxo) bond distance [1.825(2) A] is significantly shorter than the Fe(III)-O(ox) [average value 2.103(4) A] and Fe(III)-Cl bond distances [2.314(2) A]. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of 1 in the temperature range 2.0-300 K reveal the occurrence of a susceptibility maximum at 195 K and a transition toward a magnetically ordered state in the lower temperature region with T(c) = 40 K. The strong antiferromagnetic coupling through the oxo bridge (J = -46.4 cm(-1), the Hamiltonian being H = -JS(A).S(B)) accounts for the susceptibility maximum whereas a weak spin canting of approximately 0.3 degrees due to the antisymmetric magnetic exchange within the chiral three-dimensional network is responsible for the magnetic ordering. The values of coercive field (H(c)) and remnant magnetization (M(r)) obtained from the hysteresis loop of 1 at 5 K are 4000 G and 0.016 micro(B).

[Fe(bipy)(CN)(4)](-) as a versatile building block for the design of heterometallic systems: synthesis, crystal structure, and magnetic properties of PPh(4)[Fe(III)(bipy)(CN)(4)] x H(2)O, [[Fe(III)(bipy)(CN)(4)](2)M(II)(H(2)O)(4)] x 4H(2)O, and [[Fe(III)(bipy)(CN)(4)](2)Zn(II)] x 2H(2)O [bipy = 2,2'-Bipyridine; M = Mn and Zn].

The new cyano complexes of formulas PPh(4)[Fe(III)(bipy)(CN)(4)] x H(2)O (1), [[Fe(III)(bipy)(CN)(4)](2)M(II)(H(2)O)(4)] x 4H(2)O with M = Mn (2) and Zn (3), and [[Fe(III)(bipy)(CN)(4)](2)Zn(II)] x 2H(2)O (4) [bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine and PPh(4) = tetraphenylphosphonium cation] have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The structure of complex 1 is made up of mononuclear [Fe(bipy)(CN)(4)](-) anions, tetraphenyphosphonium cations, and water molecules of crystallization. The iron(III) is hexacoordinated with two nitrogen atoms of a chelating bipy and four carbon atoms of four terminal cyanide groups, building a distorted octahedron around the metal atom. The structure of complexes 2 and 3 consists of neutral centrosymmetric [[Fe(III)(bipy)(CN)(4)](2)M(II)(H(2)O)(4)] heterotrinuclear units and crystallization water molecules. The [Fe(bipy)(CN)(4)](-) entity of 1 is present in 2 and 3 acting as a monodentate ligand toward M(H(2)O)(4) units [M = Mn(II) (2) and Zn(II) (3)] through one cyanide group, the other three cyanides remaining terminal. Four water molecules and two cyanide nitrogen atoms from two [Fe(bipy)(CN)(4)](-) units in trans positions build a distorted octahedron surrounding Mn(II) (2) and Zn(II) (3). The structure of the [Fe(phen)(CN)(4)](-) complex ligand in 2 and 3 is close to that of the one in 1. The intramolecular Fe-M distances are 5.126(1) and 5.018(1) A in 2 and 3, respectively. 4 exhibits a neutral one-dimensional polymeric structure containing two types of [Fe(bipy)(CN)(4)](-) units acting as bismonodentate (Fe(1)) and trismonodentate (Fe(2)) ligands versus the divalent zinc cations through two cis-cyanide (Fe(1)) and three fac-cyanide (Fe(2)) groups. The environment of the iron atoms in 4 is distorted octahedral as in 1-3, whereas the zinc atom is pentacoordinated with five cyanide nitrogen atoms, describing a very distorted square pyramid. The iron-zinc separations across the single bridging cyanides are 5.013(1) and 5.142(1) A at Fe(1) and 5.028(1), 5.076(1), and 5.176(1) A at Fe(2). The magnetic properties of 1-3 have been investigated in the temperature range 2.0-300 K. 1 is a low-spin iron(III) complex with an important orbital contribution. The magnetic properties of 3 correspond to the sum of two magnetically isolated spin triplets, the antiferromagnetic coupling between the low-spin iron(III) centers through the -CN-Zn-NC- bridging skeleton (iron-iron separation larger than 10 A) being very weak. More interestingly, 2 exhibits a significant intramolecular antiferromagnetic interaction between the central spin sextet and peripheral spin doublets, leading to a low-lying spin quartet.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Magnetic Properties of Tetraphenylarsonium Tetrachloro(oxalato)rhenate(IV) and Bis(2,2'-bipyridine)tetrachloro(&mgr;-oxalato)copper(II)rhenium(IV).

Two new rhenium(IV) compounds of formula (AsPh(4))(2)[ReCl(4)(ox)] (1) and [ReCl(4)(&mgr;-ox)Cu(bipy)(2)] (2) (AsPh(4) = tetraphenylarsonium cation, ox = oxalate anion, and bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine) have been synthesized and their crystal structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1 and 2 crystallize in the monoclinic system, space groups P2(1)/c and P2(1)/n, respectively, with a = 22.250(5) Å, b = 11.245(3) Å, c = 19.089(4) Å, beta = 96.59(2) degrees, and Z = 4 for 1 and a = 9.421(2) Å, b = 16.909(4) Å, c = 16.179(4) Å, beta = 93.97(2) degrees, and Z = 4 for 2. The structure of 1 is made up of [ReCl(4)(ox)](2)(-) anions and AsPh(4)(+) cations held united by electrostatic forces. Rhenium(IV) is hexacoordinate, with two oxygens of a chelating ox and four chlorine atoms building a distorted octahedron around the metal atom. There is no contact between the [ReCl(4)(ox)](2)(-) anions, the shortest Re.Re and Cl.Cl distances being 10.345 and 7.209 Å, respectively. This anionic complex is coordinated to a [Cu(bipy)(2)](2+) cation in 2, through one oxalate-oxygen, giving a neutral heterometallic dinuclear unit. The Cu(II) ion shows a very distorted five-coordinated geometry, four bipy-nitrogens occuping the equatorial positions and the oxygen atom the apical one. The basal plane geometry is distorted toward the tetrahedron, the dihedral angle between the mean planes of the two bipy ligands is 37.6(2) degrees. These [ReCl(4)(&mgr;-ox)Cu(bipy)(2)] units are arranged in such a way that a chlorine atom of one of them points toward the copper atom of the neighboring one, forming helicoid chains. The intrachain Re.Cu distances through chloro and oxalato bridges are 4.658 and 4.798 Å, respectively. The magnetic behavior of 1 and 2 has been investigated over the temperature range 1.8-300 K. 1 is a magnetically diluted Re(IV) complex, the great value of zero-field splitting of the ground level (D = 60 cm(-)(1)) accounting for the variation of chi(M)T with T in the low-temperature range. 2 behaves as a ferrimagnetic chain, with weak antiferromagnetic interactions between Re(IV) and Cu(II) through oxalato and single chloro bridges.

Ferro- and Antiferromagnetic Coupling through 1,n-Dithiosquarate Bridges (n = 2, 3) in Copper(II) Dimers. Syntheses, Crystal Structures, and Magnetic Properties of [Cu(2)(bpca)(2)(1,2-dtsq)(H(2)O)].2H(2)O and [Cu(2)(bpca)(2)(1,3-dtsq)].2H(2)O.

The preparation, crystal structures, and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data for two dithiosquarate-bridged copper(II) complexes of formulas [Cu(2)(bpca)(2)(1,2-dtsq)(H(2)O)].2H(2)O (1) and [Cu(2)(bpca)(2)(1,3-dtsq)].2H(2)O (2) (where bpca = the bis(2-pyridylcarbonyl)amide anion, 1,2-dtsq = dianion of 3,4-dimercapto-3-cyclobutene-1,2-dione, and 1,3-dtsq = dianion of 3-hydroxy-4-mercapto-2-thioxo-3-cyclobuten-1-one) are reported herein. 1 and 2 crystallize in the triclinic system, space group P&onemacr;, with a = 9.3243(4) Å, b = 10.9036(5) Å, c = 15.5432(4) Å, alpha = 90.276(2) degrees, beta = 100.009(2) degrees, gamma = 94.139(2) degrees, and Z = 2 for 1 and a = 7.656(2) Å, b = 9.351(3) Å, c = 11.587(2) Å, alpha = 109.02(2) degrees, beta = 97.40(2) degrees, gamma = 110.27(2) degrees, and Z = 1 for 2. Their structures consist of the neutral dithiosquarate-bridged copper(II) units [Cu(2)(bpca)(2)(1,2-dtsq)(H(2)O)] (1) and [Cu(2)(bpca)(2)(1,3-dtsq)] (2) and water molecules of crystallization. The copper environment is distorted square pyramidal CuN(3)SO in both compounds. Bpca acts as a tridentate end-cap ligand with its three nitrogen atoms occupying three of the four basal positions. 1,3-Dithiosquarate adopts a centrosymmetric bis-bidentate bridging mode with the sulfur atom filling the fourth equatorial position around each copper atom and the oxygen at the apical site. 1,2-Dithiosquarate acts also as a bridging ligand but in an asymmetrical manner, chelating through the two sulfur atoms at one copper atom and unidentate through one sulfur at the other copper atom. The bridging sulfur occupies one equatorial position at a copper atom and the apical site at the other one. The metal-metal separations through the extended 1,2- and 1,3-dtsq bridges are 5.1654(8) and 7.212(3) Å, respectively. The exchange pathways accounting for the intermediate ferro- (1, J = +32.4 cm(-)(1)) and antiferromagnetic (2, J = -33.5 cm(-)(1)) couplings (H = -JS(A).S(B)) observed in these dithiosquarate-bridged compounds are analyzed and discussed in the light of density functional theory (DFT) calculations.
