Equatorially connected diruthenium(II,III) units toward paramagnetic supramolecular structures with singular magnetic properties.

The reaction of Ru2Cl(O2CMe)(DPhF)3 (DPhF = N,N'-diphenylformamidinate) with mono- and polycarboxylic acids gives a clean substitution of the acetate ligand, leading to the formation of complexes Ru2Cl(O2CC6H5)(DPhF)3 (1), Ru2Cl(O2CC6H4-p-CN)(DPhF)3 (2), [Ru2Cl(DPhF)3(H2O)]2(O2C)2 (3), [Ru2Cl(DPhF)3]2[C6H4-p-(CO2)2] (4), and [Ru2Cl(DPhF)3]3[C6H3-1,3,5-(CO2)3] (5). The preparation of [Ru2(NCS)(DPhF)3]3[C6H3-1,3,5-(CO2)3] (6) and {[Ru2(DPhF)3(H2O)]3[C6H3-1,3,5-(CO2)3]}(SO3CF3)3 (7) from 5 is also described. All complexes are characterized by elemental analysis, IR and electronic spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, cyclic voltammetry, and variable-temperature magnetic measurements. The crystal structure determinations of complexes 2.0.5THF and 3.THF.4H2O (THF = tetrahydrofuran) are reported. The reactions carried out demonstrate the high chemical stability of the fragment [Ru2(DPhF)3]2+, which is preserved in all tested experimental conditions. The stability of this fragment is also corroborated by the mass spectra. Electrochemical measurements reveal in all complexes one redox process due to the equilibrium Ru2(5+) <--> Ru2(6+). In the polynuclear complex 7, some additional oxidation processes are also observed that have been ascribed to the presence of two types of dimetallic units rather than two consecutive reversible oxidations. The magnetic behavior toward temperature for complexes 1-7 from 300 to 2 K is analyzed. Complexes 1-7 show low values of antiferromagnetic coupling in accordance with the molecular nature in 1 and 2 and the absence of important antiferromagnetic interaction through the carboxylate bridging ligands in 3-7, respectively. In addition, the magnetic properties of complex 7 do not correspond to any magnetic behavior described for diruthenium(II,III) complexes. The experimental data of compound 7 are simulated considering a physical mixture of S = 1/2 and 3/2 spin states. This magnetic study demonstrates the high sensitivity of the electronic configuration of the unit [Ru2(DPhF)3]2+ to small changes in the nature of the axial ligands. Finally, the energy gap between the pi and delta orbitals in these types of compounds allows the tentative assignment of the transition pi --> delta.

Controlling metal-ligand-metal oxidation state combinations by ancillary ligand (L) variation in the redox systems [L2Ru(mu-boptz)RuL2]n, boptz = 3,6-bis(2-oxidophenyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine, and L = acetylacetonate, 2,2'-bipyridine, or 2-phenylazopyridine.

The new compounds [(acac)2Ru(mu-boptz)Ru(acac)2] (1), [(bpy)2Ru(mu-boptz)Ru(bpy)2](ClO4)2 (2-(ClO4)2), and [(pap)2Ru(mu-boptz)Ru(pap)2](ClO4)2 (3-(ClO4)2) were obtained from 3,6-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (H2boptz), the crystal structure analysis of which is reported. Compound 1 contains two antiferromagnetically coupled (J = -36.7 cm(-1)) Ru(III) centers. We have investigated the role of both the donor and acceptor functions containing the boptz2- bridging ligand in combination with the electronically different ancillary ligands (donating acac-, moderately pi-accepting bpy, and strongly pi-accepting pap; acac = acetylacetonate, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine pap = 2-phenylazopyridine) by using cyclic voltammetry, spectroelectrochemistry and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy for several in situ accessible redox states. We found that metal-ligand-metal oxidation state combinations remain invariant to ancillary ligand change in some instances; however, three isoelectronic paramagnetic cores Ru(mu-boptz)Ru showed remarkable differences. The excellent tolerance of the bpy co-ligand for both Ru(III) and Ru(II) is demonstrated by the adoption of the mixed-valent form in [L2Ru(mu-boptz)RuL2]3+, L = bpy, whereas the corresponding system with pap stabilizes the Ru(II) states to yield a phenoxyl radical ligand and the compound with L = acac- contains two Ru(III) centers connected by a tetrazine radical-anion bridge.

A new coordination mode of the photometric reagent glyoxalbis(2-hydroxyanil) (H2gbha): bis-bidentate bridging by gbha2- in the redox series [(mu-gbha)[Ru(acac)2]2]n (n = -2, -1, 0, +1, +2), including a radical-bridged diruthenium(III) and a Ru(III)/Ru(IV) intermediate.

The bis-bidentate bridging function of gbha2- with N,O-/N,O- coordination was observed for the first time in the complex (mu-gbha)[Ru(III)(acac)2]2 (1). Density functional theory calculations of 1 yield a triplet ground state with a large (deltaE > 6000 cm(-1)) singlet-triplet gap. Intermolecular antiferromagnetic coupling was observed (J approximately -5.3 cm(-1)) for the solid. Complex 1 undergoes two one-electron reduction and two one-electron oxidation steps; the five redox forms [(mu-gbha)[Ru(acac)2]2]n (n = -2, -1, 0, +1, +2) were characterized by UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry (NIR = near infrared). The paramagnetic intermediates were also investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The monoanion with a comproportionation constant K(c) of 2.7 x 10(8) does not exhibit an NIR band for a Ru(III)/Ru(II) mixed-valent situation; it is best described as a 1,4-diazabutadiene radical anion containing ligand gbha*3-, which binds two ruthenium(III) centers. A Ru(III)-type EPR spectrum with g1 = 2.27, g2 = 2.21, and g3 = 1.73 is observed as a result of antiferromagnetic coupling between one Ru(III) and the ligand radical. The EPR-active monocation (K(c) = 1.7 x 10(6)) exhibits a broad (deltanu(1/2) = 2600 cm(-1)) intervalence charge-transfer band at 1800 nm, indicating a valence-averaged (Ru3.5)2 formulation (class III) with a tendency toward class II (borderline situation).

Discrete and monodimensional heteropolynuclear structures formed by tetracarboxylatodiruthenium(II,III) and perrhenato fragments.

Reaction between cationic units of carboxylate-bridged diruthenium complexes [Ru(2)(mu-O(2)CR)(4)](+) (R = Me, CMePh(2), CMe(3), CH(2)CH(2)OMe, C(Me)=CHEt, C(6)H(4)-p-OMe, Ph) and tetrabutylammonium perrhenate gives complexes with different arrangements in the solid state. Thus, the compounds Ru(2)(mu-O(2)CR)(4)(ReO(4)) [R = Me (1), CMePh(2) (2), CMe(3) (3), CH(2)CH(2)OMe (4), C(Me)=CHEt (5), C(6)H(4)-p-OMe (6), Ph (7)] have polymeric structures with the diruthenium units linked by perrhenate ligands in the axial positions. The structures of complexes 3.THF and 4 were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The tetrahedral geometry of the ReO(4)(-) anion permits the formation of a chain close to the linearity. In contrast to the polymeric chains observed in complexes 1-7, the reaction of [Ru(2)(mu-O(2)CPh)(4)](+) with NBu(4)ReO(4) also affords the compounds Ru(2)(mu-O(2)CPh)(4)(ReO(4))(H(2)O) (8) and NBu(4)[Ru(2)(mu-O(2)CPh)(4)(ReO(4))(2)] (9) depending on the reaction conditions. The structure of 8 consists of cationic and anionic units, [Ru(2)(mu-O(2)CPh)(4)(H(2)O)(2)](+) and [Ru(2)(mu-O(2)CPh)(4)(ReO(4))(2)](-), linked by hydrogen bonds, which give a three-dimensional net. The structure of complex 9.0.5H(2)O has an anionic unit similar to that of 8, whose counterion is NBu(4)(+). The Ru-Ru bond distances are slightly longer in [Ru(2)(mu-O(2)CPh)(4)(ReO(4))(2)](-) than in the polymeric compounds Ru(2)(mu-O(2)CR)(4)(ReO(4)). The magnetic behavior owes to the existence of zero-field splitting (ZFS) and a weak antiferromagnetic coupling. The experimental data are fitted with a model that considers the ZFS effect using the Hamiltonian (D) = SDS. The weak antiferromagnetic coupling is introduced as a perturbation, using the molecular field approximation.

Syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties of mixed-valent diruthenium(II,III) diphosphonates with discrete and one-dimensional structures.

Four mixed-valent ruthenium diphosphonates, namely, Na(4)[Ru(2)(hedp)(2)X]x16H(2)O [X = Cl (1), Br (2)], K(3)[Ru(2)(hedp)(2)(H(2)O)(2)]x6H(2)O (3), and Na(7)[Ru(2)(hedp)(2)Fe(CN)(6)]x24H(2)O (4), where hedp represents 1-hydroxyethylidenediphosphonate [CH(3)C(OH)(PO(3))(2)](4-), were synthesized and structurally characterized. Compounds 1, 2, and 4 show linear chain structures in which the mixed-valent [Ru(2)(hedp)(2)](3-) dimers are linked by X(-) or [Fe(CN)(6)](4-) bridges. Compound 3 contains discrete species of [Ru(2)(hedp)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](3-) where the axial positions of [Ru(2)(hedp)(2)](3-) paddlewheel are terminated by water molecules. Magnetic studies show that significant antiferromagnetic exchanges are mediated between the [Ru(2)(hedp)(2)](3-) (S = 3/2) units through halide bridges in compounds 1 and 2.

Unusual monodentate binding mode of 2,2'-dipyridylamine (L) in isomeric trans-(acac)2RuII(L)2, trans-[(acac)2RuIII(L)2]ClO4, and cis-(acac)2RuII(L)2 (acac = acetylacetonate). synthesis, structures, and spectroscopic, electrochemical, and magnetic aspects.

The reaction of cis-Ru(acac)2(CH3CN)2 (acac = acetylacetonate) with 2,2'-dipyridylamine (L) in ethanolic medium resulted in facile one-pot synthesis of stable [(acac)2RuIII(L)]ClO4 ([1]ClO4), trans-[(acac)2RuII(L)2] (2), trans-[(acac)2RuIII)L)2]ClO4 ([2]ClO4), and cis-[(acac)2RuII(L)2] (3). The bivalent congener 1 was generated via electrochemical reduction of [1]ClO4. Although in [1]+ the dipyridylamine ligand (L) is bonded to the metal ion in usual bidentate fashion, in 2/[2]+ and 3, the unusual monodentate binding mode of L has been preferentially stabilized. Moreover, in 2/[2]+ and 3, two such monodentate L's have been oriented in the trans- and cis-configurations, respectively. The binding mode of L and the isomeric geometries of the complexes were established by their single-crystal X-ray structures. The redox stability of the Ru(II) state follows the order 1 < 2 << 3. In contrast to the magnetic moment obtained for [1]ClO4, mu = 1.84 muB at 298 K, typical for low-spin Ru(III) species, the compound [2]ClO4 exhibited an anomalous magnetic moment of 2.71 muB at 300 K in the solid state. The variable-temperature magnetic measurements showed a pronounced decrease of the magnetic moment with the temperature, and that dropped to 1.59 muB at 3 K. The experimental data can be fitted satisfactorily using eq 2 that considered nonquenched spin-orbit coupling and Weiss constant in addition to the temperature-independent paramagnetism. [1]ClO4 and [2]ClO4 displayed rhombic and axial EPR spectra, respectively, in both the solid and the solution states at 77 K.

Diruthenium complexes [((acac)2RuIII)2(mu-OC2H5)2], [((acac)(2RuIII)2(mu-L)](ClO4)2, and [((bpy)(2RuII)2(mu-L)](ClO4)4 [L = (NC5H4)2-N-C6H4-N-(NC5H4)2, acac = acetylacetonate, and bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine]. synthesis, structure, magnetic, spectral, and photophysical aspects.

Paramagnetic diruthenium(III) complexes (acac)(2)Ru(III)(mu-OC(2)H(5))(2)Ru(III)(acac)(2) (6) and [(acac)(2)Ru(III)(mu-L)Ru(III)(acac)(2)](ClO(4))(2), [7](ClO(4))(2), were obtained via the reaction of binucleating bridging ligand, N,N,N',N'-tetra(2-pyridyl)-1,4-phenylenediamine [(NC(5)H(4))(2)-N-C(6)H(4)-N-(NC(5)H(4))(2), L] with the monomeric metal precursor unit (acac)(2)Ru(II)(CH(3)CN)(2) in ethanol under aerobic conditions. However, the reaction of L with the metal fragment Ru(II)(bpy)(2)(EtOH)(2)(2+) resulted in the corresponding [(bpy)(2)Ru(II) (mu-L) Ru(II)(bpy)(2)](ClO(4))(4), [8](ClO(4))(4). Crystal structures of L and 6 show that, in each case, the asymmetric unit consists of two independent half-molecules. The Ru-Ru distances in the two crystallographically independent molecules (F and G) of 6 are found to be 2.6448(8) and 2.6515(8) A, respectively. Variable-temperature magnetic studies suggest that the ruthenium(III) centers in 6 and [7](ClO(4))(2) are very weakly antiferromagnetically coupled, having J = -0.45 and -0.63 cm(-)(1), respectively. The g value calculated for 6 by using the van Vleck equation turned out to be only 1.11, whereas for [7](ClO(4))(2), the g value is 2.4, as expected for paramagnetic Ru(III) complexes. The paramagnetic complexes 6 and [7](2+) exhibit rhombic EPR spectra at 77 K in CHCl(3) (g(1) = 2.420, g(2) = 2.192, g(3) = 1.710 for 6 and g(1) = 2.385, g(2) = 2.177, g(3) = 1.753 for [7](2+)). This indicates that 6 must have an intermolecular magnetic interaction, in fact, an antiferromagnetic interaction, along at least one of the crystal axes. This conclusion was supported by ZINDO/1-level calculations. The complexes 6, [7](2+), and [8](4+) display closely spaced Ru(III)/Ru(II) couples with 70, 110, and 80 mV separations in potentials between the successive couples, respectively, implying weak intermetallic electrochemical coupling in their mixed-valent states. The electrochemical stability of the Ru(II) state follows the order: [7](2+) < 6 < [8](4+). The bipyridine derivative [8](4+) exhibits a strong luminescence [quantum yield (phi) = 0.18] at 600 nm in EtOH/MeOH (4:1) glass (at 77 K), with an estimated excited-state lifetime of approximately 10 micros.
