Time-bin-modulated biphotons from cavity-enhanced down-conversion.

We have generated a new type of biphoton state by cavity-enhanced down-conversion in a type-II phase-matched, periodically poled KTiOPO4 crystal. By introducing a weak intracavity birefringence, we obtained signal and idler photons whose quantum interference was modulated between singlet and triplet signatures according to their arrival-time difference. This cavity-enhanced biphoton source is spectrally bright, yielding a single-mode fiber-coupled coincidence rate of 0.7 pairs/s per mW of pump power per MHz of down-conversion bandwidth.

Cascaded optical parametric oscillation with a dual-grating periodically poled lithium niobate crystal.

We demonstrate continuous-wave cascaded optical parametric oscillation in which the signal field of the primary parametric oscillator internally pumps the secondary parametric oscillator. Wavelength tuning is achieved with temperature tuning and a fan-out grating structure of a dual-grating periodically poled lithium niobate crystal. Above the secondary threshold the primary signal power is clamped, and all the other output powers increase linearly with the input pump power, in accordance with theory. Cascaded parametric oscillation offers a convenient and efficient way to generate multiple tunable outputs.

Two-photon coincident-frequency entanglement via extended phase matching.

We demonstrate a new class of frequency-entangled states generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion under extended phase-matching conditions. Biphoton entanglement with coincident signal and idler frequencies is observed over a broad bandwidth in periodically poled KTiOPO4. We demonstrate high visibility in Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometric measurements under pulsed pumping without spectral filtering, which indicates excellent frequency indistinguishability between the down-converted photons. The coincident-frequency entanglement source is useful for quantum information processing and quantum measurement applications.

Demonstration of a HeNe/CH4-based optical molecular clock.

We implement a simple optical clock based on the F2(2) [P(7), v3] optical transition in methane. A single femtosecond laser's frequency comb undergoes difference frequency generation to provide an IR comb at 3.39 microm with a null carrier-envelope offset. This IR comb provides a phase-coherent link between the 88-THz optical reference and the rf repetition rate. Comparison of the repetition rate signal with a second femtosecond comb stabilized to molecular iodine shows an instability of 1.2 x 10(-13) at 1 s, limited by microwave detection of the repetition rates. The single-sideband phase noise of the microwave signal, normalized to a carrier frequency of 1 GHz, is below -93 dBc/Hz at 1-Hz offset.

Deterministic controlled-NOT gate for single-photon two-qubit quantum logic.

We demonstrate a robust implementation of a deterministic linear-optical controlled-not gate for single-photon two-qubit quantum logic. A polarization Sagnac interferometer with an embedded 45 degrees -oriented dove prism is used to enable the polarization control qubit to act on the momentum (spatial) target qubit of the same photon. The optical controlled-not gate requires no active stabilization because the two spatial modes share a common path, and it is used to entangle the polarization and momentum qubits.

Dynamical signatures of self-phase-locking in a triply resonant optical parametric oscillator.

We report on specific signatures of self-phase-locking in a cw frequency divide-by-three optical parametric oscillator subject to two competing chi(2) nonlinear processes that couple the signal and idler subharmonic waves. The self-phase-locked pair appears as a broad fringe dip within the mode-pair cluster. We have also observed Hopf instabilities of the zero-detuning case at approximately 4 x the pump threshold. These results open the path to experimental investigation of quantum entanglement and phase-locked transverse mode structures in this novel class of parametric oscillators.

Efficient single-photon counting at 1.55 microm by means of frequency upconversion.

We demonstrate efficient single-photon detection at 1.55 microm by means of sum-frequency mixing with a strong pump at 1.064 microm in periodically poled lithium niobate followed by photon counting in the visible region. This scheme offers significant advantages over existing InGaAs photon counters: continuous-wave operation, higher detection efficiency, higher counting rates, and no afterpulsing. We achieved single-photon upconversion efficiency of 90% at 21.6 W of circulating power in a resonant pump cavity with a 400-mW Nd:YAG laser. We observed high background counts at strong circulating pump powers due to efficient upconversion of pump-induced fluorescence photons.

Generating entangled two-photon states with coincident frequencies.

It is shown that parametric down-conversion, with a short-duration pump pulse and a long nonlinear crystal that is appropriately phase matched, can produce a frequency-entangled biphoton state whose individual photons are coincident in frequency. Quantum interference experiments which distinguish this state from the familiar time-coincident biphoton state are described.
