Activity of acid phosphotase in the urethra discharge in patients with various forms of gonorrhea (acute, torpid, and chronic) was studied with the use of electron-microscopy and biochemical methods. A positive reaction of nuclei of the epithelial cells to acid phosphotase in lysosomes and perichromatin granules was demonstrated. In polymorphononuclear leucocytes the positive reaction to acid phosphotase could be also sometimes observed in granules of the cytoplasm. The electronograms presented testify to heterogeneity and high activity of acid phosphotase in lysosomes. Neither electron-microscopy nor biochemical methods could help reveal any differences in the activity of acid phosphotase in various forms of gonorrhea.

The cytochrome oxidase activity of liver cell nuclei determined in the presence of ascorbate and cytochrome c equals, on the average, 1.2 nmol O2/min/mg protein. This activity tentatively named "free" cytochrome oxidase activity is in nuclei 10% and in nuclear envelopes about 30% of the total cytochrome oxidase activity determined in the presence of tetramethyl paraphenylendiamine. Following the partial hepatectomy, the "free" cytochromoxidase activity in the isolated nuclei is 5-6 times that in the control and approaches the total cytochromoxidase activity which remains at the same level. No increase of free cytochrome oxidase activity in the rat liver homogenate and the isolated mitochondria following the partial hepatectomy was observed.

From domestic birds 13 strains of avian paramyxoviruses, serotype 1, and 14 strains of serotype 2 were isolated. Avian paramyxoviruses, serotype 2, differ antigenically and biologically from each other and from the prototype variant chicken/Yucaipa/California/56. The virus was also detected experimentally in birds having contact with the infected specimens. Examinations of avian blood sera revealed wide dissemination of viruses related to the chicken/Yucaipa/56 strain in domestic bird breeding farms (43.6% to 50.0% of positive birds). The detected variability of the antigenic structure of the isolates attests to the potential emergence of a pathogenic variant.
In the Komi ASSR, 102.2 thousand mosquitoes, 207 small mammals, 1487 blood serum specimens from people, 793 cow blood sera, 140 blood serum specimens from reindeer were collected in June-August, 1988. Twenty seven virus strains isolated from mosquitoes were classified into Bunyaviridae family according to the data of electron microscopic studies. Identification of the isolates by CFT and IFA showed 18 of the strains to belong to California encephalitis complex and 9 to Bunyamwera complex. Serological studies by neutralization test demonstrates a high frequency of contact of the human population and domestic animals with viruses of the California complex practically in the entire study area: an average of 45% among human subjects, 48% among cattle and 33% among reindeer. Such high values of the immune portions indicate the activity of the discovered natural foci of this complex. The results for Batai virus from the Bunyamwera complex do not indicate its high activity: approximately 2% of positive findings in human subjects and about 4% in the cattle. The results permit a prognosis of California encephalitis and Bunyamwera complex viruses spread in the northern part of Western Siberia.
The results of seven-year ecologo-virological studies (1979-1985) of Laridae colonies on the island Zhemchuzhnyi, northern Kaspian Sea, showed annual isolation of influenza A viruses. Altogether, 95 hemagglutinating agent have been isolated. Strains with 4 different combinations of surface antigens were identified: H5N2, H13N2, H13N3, H13N6. The possibility of transovarial transmission is confirmed by the fact of isolation of an influenza virus strain A/black-headed herring gull/Astrakhan/458/85 (H13N6) from a nestling having no contacts with the environment. Simultaneous circulation of influenza A viruses (in 1983--H13N2 and H13N6, in 1985.--H13N3 and H13N6) and the presence in the virion of neuraminidase of human influenza virus (N2) allow to consider the isolates to be natural recombinants.
The antigenic structure of influenza H13 viruses isolated from wild birds in the USSR in 1976-1985 was studied. Antiserum against the reference A/gull/Maryland/704/77 (H13N6) strain was used to demonstrate the antigenic variations among the viruses. The homology of nucleotide sequences in the region 99-215 for the two A/H13N6 strains, A/gull/Maryland/704/77 and A/great black-headed gull/Astrakhan/227/84, were 75% and 86%, respectively. The 9-base segment deletion in A/grey black-headed gull/Astrakhan/277/84 was observed. Comparison of the predicted amino acid sequences of the strains' hemagglutinin in the appropriate region (amino acids 2-40) revealed 5 replacements (86% homology). Two replacements of arginine by lysine and asparagine by serine in positions 15 and 16, respectively, are the most significant. The latter replacement is accompanied by a change in the glycosylation site and might alter its three-dimensional structure. Further studies of the isolate genome are under way.

The minimal doses of metronidazole, capable of the irreversible immobilization of Trichomonas in the presence of one antiprotozoan preparation and after the addition of recombinant tumor necrosis factor (TNF), recombinant gamma-interferon and complex immunoglobulin preparation (CIP) into the culture medium, were determined on 4 T.vaginalis isolates, obtained on day 2 after the inoculation of material from the mucous membrane of the urogenital organs of patients (incubation at 37 degrees C). After 12-hour incubation of Trichomonas with immunobiological preparations their sensitivity to metronidazole increased 2-fold. After the simultaneous introduction of TNF, gamma-interferon and CIP into the culture medium, the sensitivity of Trichomonas to the action of metronidazole increased 5- to 7-fold. The introduction of an additional dose of TNF into the culture medium, but without CIP led to the preservation of the motility in a small number of these microorganisms. The use of human albumin instead of CIP at the same concentration (15 g/l) in the presence of TNF and gamma-interferon ensured the complete immobilization of Trichomonas in all isolates.
