[The immunohistochemical study of trophoblast beta 1-globulin expression in cancer and in the mucosa of the large intestine].

The expression of pregnancy-specific beta-1-globulin (SP1) was studied in cancer-affected and nonaffected colon mucosa. The antigen was revealed in 19 out of 50 (38%) cases of carcinoma and in 1 out of 4 cases of ulcerative colitis. SP1 was found neither in noncancer colon mucosa nor in transitional mucosa and adenomas. The antigen was detected in the epithelium and stromal macrophages of carcinoma. SP1-positive cells were located mainly in the sites of tumor invasion. The results allow considering SP1 the tumor marker suitable for immunohistochemical diagnosis of colon cancer.

Adenocarcinoma

[Morphological diagnosis and prognosis in early ductal breast cancer].

One hundred and ten cases of precancer and early ductal breast cancer were analysed. Patterns of non-invasive ductal cancer were identified. Multicentric growth was observed in 55.8% of patients with intraductal cancer and invasive ductal cancer with predominant intraductal component. Early ductal cancer proved to have favorable prognosis, with only 2.2% of patients with disseminated tumor and 4.4% of those with recurrence identified during the mean follow-up period of 53.5 months.

[The potentials for the organ-preserving treatment of early stomach cancer].

The oncological substantiation of endoscopic and economical surgical treatment of T1N0-1M0 gastric carcinoma in 46 patients was appraised. The results were studied with due regard for the peculiarities of early gastric carcinoma (EGC) revealed in 290 patients after standard surgical management. It was established that organ-preserving treatment of ECG is possible--5-years survival was 96.2%. Endoscopic removal can be considered radical only in T1P1 tumors without invasion of the lymphatic vessels of the wall and was of a multistage character in 86.2% of cases. Careful surveillance after its completion is necessary. Surgical treatment in indicated in repeated recurrences; they were encountered in 44.8% of cases. The causes of the recurrences were noncoincidence of the macroscopic and histological boundaries of the tumor (33.6%), multicentric growth (30.4%), and invasion of the submucosa. Metastases are encountered in the lymph nodes in 9.1% of cases in economical treatment. In T1N0-1M0P1-2 carcinoma, absence of multicentric growth, and III degree dysplasia in the surrounding mucosa (reflecting increased risk of multicentric growth) the volume of organ resection may be limited on condition that P1 lymphadenectomy is performed. The results of organ-preserving treatment are comparable with those of surgical treatment conducted in a standard volume.

Adenoma

[Monoclonal antibodies to neuron-specific enolase in phenotyping lung cancer].

Morphological assessment of two samples of monoclonal antibodies (mcAB) to gamma-unit of neurospecific human enolase (NSE) is performed. It is established that mcABs interact in the tissue sections with neurons of the brain and spinal cord, gangliocytes of the central and peripheral nervous system this proving their specificity. 56 cases of lung carcinoma are studied using these mcABs; endocrine carcinoma was found in 11 cases, nonendocrine--in 45 cases. Neuroendocrine differentiation is revealed in 8 of 45 cases of non-small cell carcinoma; in all observations of small cell carcinoma NSE was found.

[Morphometric parameters of malignant cells in non-leukemic hemoblastosis with primary lymph node involvement].

Morphometric studies were conducted to distinguish reactive and malignant lymphoid processes and to obtain a more objective and reproducible grading system for non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL). Twenty-three untreated patients (3 with reactive lymphadenitis, 2 with diffuse lymphomas, 18 with lymphosarcomas) were studied. The sections of lymph nodes were stained with 50% aqueous silver nitrate solution and then counter-stained with methylene blue. MOP-Videoplan (Reichert, Austria) image analyzer was used for morphometry. The size and shape of nucleus, number and position of nucleoli and the number of silver grains (K1) and relative size (K2) of each grain were investigated. The computer classification of lymphoid cells based on a stepwise linear discriminant analysis resulted in 63% correctly classified cells. Among seven most discriminating parameters, the nucleoli area and the number and size of silver grains demonstrated the highest correlation with malignancy. The data obtained have evidenced that nucleolar parameters can be applied to computer classification of lymphoid neoplastic cells and for objective grading of NHL.

Adolescent

[The morphology of the regional lymph nodes in skin melanoma].

Morphometric analysis was used to study the architectonics of hyperplastic regional lymph nodes in malignant melanoma patients as offset by normal condition. Specific volume relationships between all basic structures of the organ were established practically in all study groups. The specific features established should be continued at morphologic examination of lymph nodes for skin melanoma diagnosis.

Axilla

[Immunohistochemical study of meconial antigens in neoplasms and mucosa of the colon and rectum].

The expression of 4 meconial antigens--beta-1-MA, beta-2-MA, MMA, gamma-MA in neoplastic and preneoplastic colonic mucosa was studied. Meconial antigens were revealed in small amount in adult normal colonic epithelium. The mucosa adjacent to tumours was rich in these antigens. Cellular localization of meconial antigens in these parts of colonic mucosa was similar to that of embryonal alimentary tract. beta-1-MA was found in 96%, beta-2-MA--73.6%, MMA--82.8%, gamma-MA--31.8% of colonic carcinomas.

[The histological characteristics of human lung tumor transplants growing under the renal capsule of mice in an immunodepressed state].

In order to determine the prognostic value of a "subcapsular test" in assessment of individual sensitivity of lung tumors to antitumor action, research was conducted into the histological structure of 18 human lung tumors and 110 grafts of these tumors, which had grown within 6 days under the renal capsule in mice under the immunosuppressed condition, caused by whole-body irradiation. The presence of necrosis in an original tumor led to connective tissue growth in grafts. The stroma/parenchyma ratio in grafts was increased as compared to original tumors. Lymphoid infiltration in 6-day grafts was, as a rule, unmarked. In 2 of 18 cases histotypes of a primary tumor and its grafts differed, i. e. the "subcapsular test" could be used to detect latent polymorphism of lung tumors. Correct prognosis of an individual response of human lung tumors to antitumor action with the "subcapsular test" also necessitated histological verification of the results.

Animals

[Chemotherapeutic pathomorphosis of breast cancer].

Features of pathomorphism of mammary carcinoma were studied in 177 women after a course of drug therapy. Qualitative and quantitative morphologic changes in the tumor were poorly manifest: they were detected in only 54 percent of patients and only in 9 percent the effect was manifest (third-fourth stage of involvement). Characteristic findings here were augmentation of cellular dystrophy, necrotic changes, enhanced nuclear polymorphism; significant injury to tumor parenchyma was paralleled by development of xanthomatosis foci and lymphoid histiocytic infiltration.

Antineoplastic Combined Chemotherapy Protocols

[Characteristics of pulmonary cancer metastasis to thoracic lymph nodes in primary tumor (T1)].

The characteristic features of primary T1 tumor metastasis to the intrathoracic lymph nodes were studied in specimens removed during surgical treatment of 404 patients with lung carcinoma. Regional metastases were detected in 31.9% of cases. The frequency of metastases in central carcinoma was determined by the level of involvement of the bronchus. The percentage of affection of the regional collectors was highest in patients with small-cell carcinoma. It is shown that in primary T1 lung carcinoma not only the bronchopulmonary and root but also the tracheobronchial lymph must be removed and examined immediately during the operation.

Adenocarcinoma

[Antigenic markers of precancer and cancer of the stomach].

Three groups of antigens are distinguished: 1) those of normal stomach mucous membrane, 2) antigens characteristic of metaplastic epithelium in the enterolized mucous membrane; 3) other antigens. Each of these antigens is considered separately. Stomach, intestinal, oncofetal ectopic and other antigens expression allows to distinguish varieties of the stomach tissue differentiation and the features of the morphofunctional modification of the precancerous mucous membrane.

[Breast cancer and the background processes].

A morphologic study of the background changes in mammary tissue was carried out, based on systematization of elementary, nosologically and morphologically well determined parenchymatous structures with the use of analysis of correlations. Regularities in the relationships between parenchymatous changes were revealed, depending on the site and severity of epithelial dysplasia. Statistical analysis has proved that grave epithelial dysplasia is a marker of high risk of preinvasive and invasive carcinoma. Histologic structure of both invasive and preinvasive carcinoma is not always determined by the site of grave epithelial dysplasia in certain type structures. Regularities in relationships and combinations of parenchymatous structures associated with severe epithelial dysplasia are diagnostically valuable for the detection of preinvasive and invasive carcinoma irrespective of its histologic form.
