[Epidemiology of primary liver cancer in French Polynesia].

Thirty-one cases of primary liver cancer recorded since 1980 to 1988 in French Polynesia are studied. Four risk factors are brought to the fore: male, more than 50 years old, birth in Austral archipelago and in this case AgHBs carriage. The relative risk for birth in Austral archipelago reach to 9.23. The relative risk for AgHBs carriers from this archipelago reach to 42.7. Costs of primary liver cancer and to immunization against hepatitis B virus are compared. Authors suggest to start an immunization program.

Adenoma, Bile Duct↗

[Pneumococcal infections in military quarters (author's transl)].

A retrospective study on prevalence of pneumococcal in French military recruits of two military districts has been made in 1976 and 1977. Among 185,000 adults, 19 pneumococcal diseases were registered (0,1%). 15 were respiratory infections (10 acute pneumonia). The agent has been isolated of blood (the half) and of others samples : expectoration... (the half). In despite of geographical and climatic differences of two districts, the incidence of pneumococcal pneumonia is the same. The low prevalence of that infection results from the age, selection, and medical surveillance of the population studied.

[Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in French Polynesia].

HIV case finding tests are performed since three years in French Polynesia. Ratio of seropositivity is 2.4/10,000 inhabitants. The 45 seropositive patients found in three years belong to groups at risk (homosexual males; multi-transfusion recipients; addicts). As far as donors are concerned, no seropositivity was actually observed through the 16,881 tests carried out in 30 months. Outbreak of HIV seems to be recent in Tahiti.

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome↗

[Relapse of an amebic abscess of the liver after treatment with metronidazole].

The authors report the observation of a twenty four years old soldier; subsequent to a stay in an endemic amoebic area, he showed several successive dysenteric episodes which were treated with metronidazole despite the absence of amoeba in the coprological examination. During one of these episodes, he presented a single rectal ulceration, then a hepatic abscess was observed four months later. The patient was treated with metronidazole and by contact amoebicides. In spite of that, amoeba were disclosed after a parasitological stool examination.

[Hemolytic anemia and the digestive system].

Haemolytic anemias are less frequently encountered in gastro-enterology than hyposideremic hypochrome anemias, or megaloblastic anemias. In our country, migrant's pathology has become increasingly important and congenital haemolytic anemias are part of this pathology. These and their main digestive complications require an early diagnosis, which is the best sign of an effective treatment. A severe haemolytic anemia occurring during a chronic liver disease often represents an evolutive turning point.

[Juvenile recto-colonic polyposis. Apropos of a case in Madagascar].

The authors relate the first case of juvenile polyposis coli noticed in Madagascar. It is a sporadic case developing a serious clinic picture with an accidentally fatal end in a 7 years old Malagasy girl. They recall the principal epidemiological, anatomopathological, clinic and evolutive features which are typical of this polyposis. They wish that the way to medical progress will soon lead to better knowledge of the place of the intestinal polyposis in African countries.
