Observation of in-medium modifications of the omega meson.

The photoproduction of omega mesons on nuclei has been investigated using the Crystal Barrel/TAPS experiment at the ELSA tagged photon facility in Bonn. The aim is to study possible in-medium modifications of the omega meson via the reaction gamma + A --> omega + X --> pi(0)gamma + X('). Results obtained for Nb are compared to a reference measurement on a LH2 target. While for recoiling, long-lived mesons (pi(0), eta, and eta;(')), which decay outside of the nucleus, a difference in the line shape for the two data samples is not observed, we find a significant enhancement towards lower masses for omega mesons produced on the Nb target. For momenta less than 500 MeV/c an in-medium omega meson mass of M(medium) = [722(+4)(-4)(stat)+35-5(syst)] MeV/c(2) has been deduced at an estimated average nuclear density of 0.6rho(0).

Measurement of helicity-dependent photoabsorption cross sections on the neutron from 815 to 1825 MeV.

Helicity-dependent total photoabsorption cross sections on the deuteron have been measured for the first time at ELSA (Bonn) in the photon energy range from 815 to 1825 MeV. Circularly polarized tagged photons impinging on a longitudinally polarized LiD target have been used together with a highly efficient 4pi detector system. The data around 1 GeV are not compatible with predictions from existing multipole analyses. From the measured energy range an experimental contribution to the GDH integral on the neutron of [33.9 +/- 5.5(stat) +/- 4.5(syst)] microb is extracted.

Neutral-pion photoproduction off protons in the energy range 0.3 GeV<E(gamma)<3 GeV.

Single pi(0) photoproduction has been studied with the CB-ELSA experiment at Bonn using tagged photon energies between 0.3 and 3.0 GeV. The experimental setup covers a very large solid angle of approximately 98% of 4pi. Differential cross sections dsigma/dOmega have been measured. Complicated structures in the angular distributions indicate a variety of different resonances being produced in the s channel intermediate state gammap-->N(*)(Delta(*))-->ppi(0). A combined analysis including the data presented in this letter along with other data sets reveals contributions from known resonances and evidence for a new resonance N(2070)D15.

Photoproduction of eta mesons off protons for 0.75 GeV<E(gamma)<3 GeV.

Total and differential cross sections for the reaction p(gamma, eta)p have been measured for photon energies in the range from 750 MeV to 3 GeV. The low-energy data are dominated by the S11 wave which has two poles in the energy region below 2 GeV. Eleven nucleon resonances are observed in their decay into peta. At medium energies we find evidence for a new resonance N(2070)D15 with (M,Gamma)=(2068+/-22, 295+/-40) MeV. At gamma energies above 1.5 GeV, a strong peak in the forward direction develops, signaling the exchange of vector mesons in the t channel.

Experimental check of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule for 1H.

For the first time we checked the fundamental Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule for the proton experimentally in the photon energy range from 0.2-2.9 GeV with the tagged photon facilities at MAMI (Mainz) and ELSA (Bonn). New data of the doubly polarized total cross section difference are presented in the energy range from 1.6 to 2.9 GeV. The contribution to the GDH integral from 0.2-2.9 GeV yields [254+/-5(stat)+/-12(syst)] microb with negative contributions in the Regge regime at photon energies above 2.1 GeV. This trend supports the validity of the GDH sum rule.

First Measurement of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn Sum Rule for 1H from 0.7 to 1.8 GeV at ELSA.

To verify the fundamental Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule for the first time experimentally, we measured the helicity dependent total photoabsorption cross section with circularly polarized real photons and longitudinally polarized nucleons in the photon energy range 0.68-1.82 GeV with the tagged photon facility at ELSA. The experiment was carried out with a 4pi detection system, a circularly polarized tagged photon beam, and a frozen spin polarized proton target. The contribution to the GDH sum rule in this photon energy range is [49.9+/-2.4(stat)+/-2.2(syst)] microb.

Helicity amplitudes A1/2 and A3/2 for the D13(1520) resonance obtained from the gamma-->p-->-->ppi(0) Reaction.

The helicity dependence of the gamma-->p-->-->ppi(0) reaction has been measured for the first time in the photon-energy range from 550 to 790 MeV. The experiment, performed at the Mainz microtron MAMI, used a 4pi-detector system, a circularly polarized, tagged photon beam, and a longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target. These data are predominantly sensitive to the D13(1520) resonance and are used to determine its helicity amplitudes.

Helicity dependence of gammap --> Npi below 450 MeV and contribution to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule.

The helicity dependence of the single pion photoproduction on the proton has been measured in the energy range from 200 to 450 MeV for the first time. The experiment, performed at the Mainz microtron MAMI, used a 4pi-detector system, a circularly polarized, tagged photon beam, and a frozen-spin target. The data obtained provide new information for multipole analyses of pion photoproduction and determine the main contributions to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule and the forward spin polarizability gamma(0).

Transformation of Escherichia coli cells by pH 2.3 plasmid DNA treated with psoralens plus near-UV light.

The effect of two psoralens, 8-methoxypsoralen (8MOP) and angelicin (ANG), plus near-UV (PUVA) on the transformation capacity of pH 2.3 plasmid DNA on Escherichia coli was studied. Under identical experimental conditions the 8MOP linking to plasmid DNA drastically decreased its transformation capacity compared with the ANG linking. In the case of 8MOP, the decrease depends on the UV dose, as well as on the molar ratios of psoralen and DNA nucleotides. When the effect of short-wavelength UV (UVB) was tested, the higher the molar ratios, the more the combined effects of PUVA and UVB were negative.

Modifications in dietary self-selection specifically attributable to voluntary wheel running and exercise training in the rat.

To explore the effects of physical exercise on total caloric intake, body weight gain, and dietary self-selection in rats, female rats of the Dark Agouti strain were placed on macronutrient self-selection. They had free access to running wheels during the whole experimental period. After 16 days of voluntary exercise only, they were trained on a motor-driven treadmill (16 m/min) at the beginning of the dark period. Runtime was progressively increased and reached 3 h per day (plateau). When trained, the rats decreased spontaneous wheel running. Voluntary wheel running did not modify body weight gain. However, it increased both carbohydrate and total caloric intakes. Exercise training reduced body weight gain, but did not further modify total caloric intake. Moreover it increased protein and reduced fat intakes. Most of the training-induced modifications were not side effects of fasting during exercise training.

Effects of administration of branched-chain amino acids vs. glucose during acute exercise in the rat.

Several studies of the relationship of food intake to physical exercise strongly suggest that the two are closely linked. Serotonin transmission seems to be particularly important in the regulation of both appetite and central fatigue. Thus, the ingestion of branched-chain amino acids has been reported to decrease serotonin production and to improve physical performance. In the present study, the effects of three treatments (water, glucose, and branched-chain amino acids) were compared in 34 male Wistar rats. Maximal exercise duration, blood insulin, and glucose levels were measured. Results showed that following the ingestion of branched-chain amino acids, physical performance is lower and blood insulin level is higher than after glucose administration.

Toxicological evaluation of agromet (Metalaxyl) preparation.

A complex toxicological study was carried out in relation to the hygienic standardization of the fungicide preparation Ridomil, whose forthcoming production in this country will be under the name Metalaxyl. The study was performed on sexually mature white rats of both sexes, at oral, dermal and inhalation exposure, acute, subacute and chronic experiments, according to the Bulgarian State Standard. Besides the routine toxicological studies were carried also studies for establishing the long-term effects of the preparation (gonadotropic, embryotoxic and teratogenic, cardiovascular). The results from the study permitted the Agromet preparation to be put in III class--moderately toxic according to limiting index LD50 oral. On the basis of data from the authors study on the general toxicity and long-term effects of Metalaxyl a temporary MAC 4 mg/m3 was proposed.

Behavioral effects induced by beta CCE in free or restrained rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta).

Behavioral effects of the IV injection of beta carboline carboxylic acid ethyl ester (beta CCE) were studied in chair-restrained rhesus monkeys and in rhesus monkeys freely moving in their cages. Observations made during the administration of increasing doses of beta CCE (0.5, 1 and 2 mg/kg) evidence behaviors reflecting a state of anxiety. The similarity of results obtained under the two experimental conditions excludes a potential effect of restraint on the behavioral expression of effects induced by the administered molecule. Convulsions observed in three subjects out of twelve should call for great caution when using this molecule.

Behavioural despair in rats: a new model sensitive to antidepressant treatments.

Rats when forced to swim in a cylinder from which they cannot escape will, after an initial period of vigorous activity, adopt a characteristic immobile posture which can be readily identified. Immobility was reduced by various clinically effective antidepressant drugs at doses which otherwise decreased spontaneous motor activity in an open field. Antidepressants could thus be distinguished from psychostimulants which decreased immobility at doses which increased general activity. Anxiolytic compounds did not affect immobility whereas major tranquilisers enhanced it. Immobility was also reduced by electroconvulsive shock, REM sleep deprivation and "enrichment" of the environment. It was concluded that immobility reflects a state of lowered mood in the rat which is selectively sensitive to antidepressant treatments. Positive findings with atypical antidepressant drugs such as iprindole and mianserin suggest that the method may be capable of discovering new antidepressants hitherto undetectable with classical pharmacological tests.
