The authors, after presenting a review of research work on amyloidosis of the islets of Langerhans,, provide the information obtained from their study of a random sample of 200 autopsies. Special attention was paid to the correlation between amyloidosis of the islets of Langerhans, diabetes mellitus and aging. The analysis of the sample would show there is a close relationship between the general process of aging and insular amyloid deposits; diabetes mellitus would then occur, increasing the amount of the above-mentioned deposits only in patients of a more advanced aged.
Of the 12 cases of verrusous squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx encountered since 1968 at the Department of Otolaryngology of Padua University (including the Verona Section) and the Department of Pathologic Anatomy of the University of Trieste, three are reported, together with an investigation of the nuclear DNA content of the tumour cells. It is suggested that such a study may assit with early detection of verrucous carcinoma. The laryngeal localization of the neoplasm has been evidenced only in some centres. The difficulties in establishing a correct diagnosis for this variant of squamous cell carcinoma are emphasized and the pathomorphological features, as well as the microscopic and macroscopic appearances, are discussed. The prognosis is excellent and the therapy of choice must be only surgical, as radiation has not only proven ineffective, but in some cases has induced anaplasia, leading to a rapid dissemination of the tumour.

This study was carried out in order to define the histochemical behaviour of the substance present in follicles of normal parathyroid glands obtained at routine autopsies. It was noticed that these follicles with typical amyloid staining properties are constantly present in old persons; furthermore the amyloid in question presents histochemical characteristics which identify it as Apudamyloid. With this in mind we studied the possible, concomitant, systemic, amyloid microdeposits; we noticed that intrafollicular Apudamyloid of the parathyroid gland is often encountered together with immune deposits which are sometimes present in the same gland though not necessarily in the follicles.

The maximal explosive power of the lower limbs of one astronaut has been measured before launch, and 2, 6 and 11 days after re-entry from 31 days on the MIR Station (EUROMIR '94). The subject, sitting on the carriage-seat of a Multipurpose Ergometer-Dynamometer (MED) constructed ad hoc in our laboratory, pushed maximally with both feet on two force platforms (knees angle 110 degrees). The carriage was free to move backwards on two rails inclined 20 degrees upwards. The force (F) of the lower limbs and the speed of the carriage (v) were recorded and the instantaneous mechanical power (w) was calculated as w = F * v. The average value of the mechanical power (w max) throughout the explosive effort was then obtained. The overall duration of the push was on the average about 0.3 s. It was observed that, at day R+2, mean force, maximal velocity, maximal power (mean and peak), maximal acceleration and overall mechanical work, were all reduced between 60 and 80% of pre-flight values. However, the recovery was remarkably fast, since all these parameters attained about 90% of pre-flight values by day R+11.
