Lingually displaced mandibular canine teeth: orthodontic treatment alternatives in the dog.

Lingual displacements of mandibular canine teeth often occur following retention of deciduous canine teeth. This condition often results in trauma of occlusion to the lingual aspect of the maxillary canine tooth and the further development of a periodontal pocket or an oronasal fistula. This condition can be corrected using orthodontic appliances. The purpose of this paper is to discuss and illustrate the various alternatives available for correction of this common malocclusion in dogs.

Geriatric dentistry.

Veterinary dentistry for geriatric patients is a vital part of the health maintenance program. For detailed procedures on the many facets of veterinary dentistry, there are a number of texts and articles in journals. The practitioner who wishes to become more proficient in dentistry should take a planned approach of reading, attending seminars, and practicing. Most importantly, look. The conditions are there and they are causing problems. If we are to attend to the entire health needs of our geriatric patients, then a thorough knowledge of veterinary dentistry is absolutely necessary.

Visceral larva migrans: a risk assessment in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Visceral larva migrans, VLM, is a disease of young children. Due to lack of awareness of the disease as well as its non-specific symptomology, a survey of the potential risk of acquiring the disease was conducted in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area. The greatest number of dogs showing positive results to tests for the presence of the eggs of Toxocara canis were those less than one year of age. Very few of the soil samples collected from twenty different parks/playgrounds were found to contain eggs of T. canis. A higher percentage of soil samples from individual yards proved to be contaminated with the eggs of the parasite. Even though the incidence of VLM in Baton Rouge is reported to be quite low, the potential for the infection certainly is present. Veterinarians must be prepared to take a leading role in the education of their clients as to the potential of the disease for the children associated with new puppies, and the measures parents can take to reduce the exposure potential.

Ultrastructure of a feline extraskeletal giant cell tumor (malignant fibrous histiocytoma).

A subcutaneous extraskeletal giant cell tumor (malignant fibrous histiocytoma) was excised repeatedly from a 9-year-old Domestic Shorthair cat. Ultrastructurally, the mass was composed of fibroblast-like, histiocyte-like, and multinucleated giant cells, and some undifferentiated cells and mononuclear cells intermediate between the fibroblast-like and histiocyte-like cells. Fibroblast-like cells were characterized by abundant well-developed rough endoplasmic reticulum, relatively smooth cytoplasmic membranes, few lysosomal structures, and finely granular chromatin. Histiocyte-like cells resembled immature macrophages. The cell membranes had many villous projections. Rough endoplasmic reticulum varied in quantity. Lysosomes were numerous. Multinucleated giant cells had characteristics of both the fibroblast-like and histiocyte-like cells. No viral particles were seen.
