[Primary leiomyosarcoma of vascular origin in the groin causing lower extremity venous compression].

A soft tissue tumor causing left lower extremity swelling in a 43 years old female was detected in the left inguinal region and resection was performed at the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery of Semmelweis University of Medicine, Budapest. Histologic examination revealed primary leiomyosarcoma of vascular origin. On the base of this case attention is called to this rare disease, which has poor prognosis. Early diagnosis and complete resection plays key role in the treatment of leiomyosarcoma and may improve survival.

[Cardiovascular disease-related serum lipid parameters in a Hungarian subpopulation].

The blood samples of 229 volunteers (100 men, aged 35-59 y and 129 women, aged 35-54 y) were randomly selected and analysed for serum lipids (triglyceride, total, HDL- and LDL-cholesterol), apolipoproteins (apolipoprotein A1, A2 and B) and Lp(a). The mean serum level of triglyceride was in the high risk category in males (2.50 +/- 2.27 mmol/L) and in normal range in females (1.31 +/- 0.82 mmol/L). Concentrations of total cholesterol (male: 5.93 +/- 1.16, female: 5.66 +/- 0.99 mmol/L) and LDL-cholesterol (male: 3.72 +/- 0.94, female: 3.55 +/- 0.81 mmol/L) were in the borderline risk category, and up to the 75th percentiles both total cholesterol (male: > 6.71, female: > 6.25 mmol/L) and LDL-cholesterol (male: > 4.38, female: > 4.10 mmol/L) were in the high risk categories. The mean values of HDL-cholesterol and apolipoprotein A1, A2 and B were in the desirable range in both sexes, but apolipoprotein B in males and females (male: > 1.3, female: > 1.29 g/dl) were in the high risk category up to the 75th and 90th percentiles, respectively. The mean levels of serum Lp(a) were 19.5 +/- 25.0 and 21.0 +/- 25.2 mg/dl for men and women, respectively, and up to the 75th percentiles were in the high risk category (> 30 mg/dl) both in males and females.

[The use of results of scientific nutrition research in clinical practice].

Author surveys clinically relevant results of recent years' nutritional researches. More and more details of the etiological bases of the diet-disease relation are revealed by molecular biology, e.g. the genetic background of link between fat intake and cardiovascular diseases, the metabolism of fatty acids. The results may be used in the implementation of balanced nutrition serving for prevention and in the elaboration of recommended levels of nutrient intake. Proper nutrition starts already in the fetal life: deficient nutrient supply of the mother means a risk factor to chronic, noncommunicable diseases of adulthood. Different nutrients, components in food might be especially favourable to health status, this phenomenon is indicated in English written scientific literature by the word "nutraceutical" (in Japan "functional foods"). In the year of 1994, the buzz word of nutrition was: antioxidant. The mechanism of the development of oxidative stress, its inhibition by antioxidative agents in food and the use of it in the prevention of malignant tumors (cancers), cardiovascular diseases, cataracts and other degenerative processes of old age, were studied comprehensively. The importance of obesity, fat intake in the risk of chronic diseases constitutes a separate group of problems. Nutrition is also an important factor in the care of HIV/AIDS patients and in the inhibition of the transfer of HIV-1 between mother and fetus.

Changes of some lipid and lipid peroxidation characteristics in obese people as a result of a low energy diet.

In blood samples of 54 obese persons (13 men, 41 women) some lipid components, malondialdehyde (MDA), and the activities of free radical protecting enzymes superoxide-dismutase (SOD) and glutathione-peroxidase (GSHpx), were determined before and after a seven-day slimming diet of 2.1 MJ/day. Body weight, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, and HDL-3-cholesterol all decreased, total cholesterol increased after the seven days hospitalization. After continuing the slimming diet (5.0-6.3 MJ/day) at home, HDL-2-cholesterol increased and total cholesterol returned to the initial value after three months. MDA decreased in the groups of hyperlipoproteinemia II/a and II/b and also in the group with high cholesterol and triglyceride levels (above 5.7 and 2.7 mmol/l). Correlation coefficients refer to the dominant role of high TG in the intensity of lipid peroxidation. The activity of SOD fell after the slimming, independent of lipid parameters. GSHpx activity remained unchanged except a drop in the male participants having high cholesterol levels. The behavior of the free radical protecting enzymes needs further examination.

Longitudinal examinations in the course of dietotherapy of mentally retarded obese in-patients.

Mentally retarded obese in-patients were fed by low-energy diet (4.2-4.6 MJ) for 9 months. During this period, an average of 13 +/- 4.5 kg loss of body mass occurred in men and 16 +/- 2.7 kg in women. Anthropometric measurements were performed before starting the dietotherapy and in the ninth month. Changes of body fat could be followed well when calculated according to BMI. Less reliable results were obtained with skinfold thickness measurements, presumably due to body deformities. Results of clinical laboratory tests, which were carried out before starting the dietotherapy and in the fourth and seventh months, suggested that a low-energy-containing diet with balanced nutrient content and adequate protein intake did not impair protein metabolism, favourably affected serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels, but resulted in an unfavourable decrease in the HDL-cholesterol content.

Summation of unit potentials.

The analysis of the compound surface EMG records is directed to obtain information on the activity of motor units. The aim of this study is to contribute to the investigation of the processes taking place in the summation of different unit potentials. The experiments were performed on frog's nerve-muscle preparations. The nerves were stimulated separately and collectively with synchronous and asynchronous electrical impulses. The results obtained by the analysis of the action potentials recorded from the muscles demonstrate that the compound action potentials were brought about by the linear summation of unit potentials involved in the common response.
