Chemical, physical, and histologic studies on four commercial apatites used for alveolar ridge augmentation.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate four commercial apatite products. Subperiosteal alveolar ridge augmentation was performed on the maxilla of rats by implantation of granules of two dense products and of two porous products, and the tissue response was compared with the material characteristics obtained by chemical analysis and infrared spectrometry. None of the apatites caused osteoinduction or osteoconduction; fibrous encapsulation with multinuclear giant cells was observed around all four types. One of the apatites was fluorapatite and not hydroxylapatite, as claimed by the manufacturer. The tissue response to this implant material was dominated by multinuclear giant cells.

Alveolar Process

Inhibition of heterotopic osteogenesis in rats by a new bioerodible system for local delivery of indomethacin.

A study was done to evaluate the effect of a system for the local delivery of indomethacin on demineralized bone-induced formation of heterotopic bone in the abdominal muscles of rats. Two separate investigations were conducted on a total of forty-eight Wistar rats. In both series, two types of implants were used: polyorthoester and demineralized bone (Group A, the control group) and polyorthoester with 5 per cent indomethacin and demineralized bone (Group B, the experimental group). In the first series, host-tissue responses and osteoinduction were evaluated histologically at two, three, and four weeks after the implantation. In the second series, the formation of bone was quantified on the basis of uptake of 85Sr at four weeks after the implantation. The polyorthoester system for the local delivery of indomethacin significantly inhibited demineralized bone-induced heterotopic formation of bone, as demonstrated by light microscopy and by uptake of 85Sr. The polyorthoester, with or without the drug, caused little tissue reaction and was resorbed almost completely at four weeks.

Abdominal Muscles

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma.

An ameloblastic fibro-odontoma in a 14-year-old girl is reported. The case has clinical interest because of the location and the size of the tumor which was surgically enucleated. The different views about clinical, radiographical and histopathological characteristics and the classification of this benign tumor are discussed. The postoperative course was uneventful and the case has been controlled for 3 years without recurrence.

Indomethacin-induced inhibition of haversian remodelling in rabbits.

The effect of indomethacin on haversian remodelling in the radius was studied in 16 rabbits. An osteotomy and a saw-cut almost through the bone were made in the middle and distal parts of the right radius, respectively. In order to obtain biological osteosynthesis in the osteotomy and the saw-cut the rabbits were not treated in any way during the following 3 weeks. They were then given either indomethacin or placebo suspensions per os, 10 mg/kg/day for 2 weeks, followed by 5 mg/kg/day for 4 weeks. The extent of haversian remodelling was estimated by calcein and oxytetracycline fluorochrome labels given at the start of the indomethacin treatment and 3 weeks later, respectively. After 2 weeks of indomethacin treatment (10 mg/kg/day) the indomethacin plasma levels were about 0.18 microgram/ml 24 hours after the last dose. Indomethacin treatment significantly (2P less than 0.019) inhibited haversian remodelling as estimated by fluorochrome labelling.

Animals

A study of Sézary cells in peripheral blood and skin lesions.

A patient with Sézary syndrome is presented. By phase contrast and scanning electron microscopy Sézary cells were demonstrated in peripheral blood and in skin tissue. Investigation of atypical mononuclear cells seen in the peripheral blood showed that these cells lack receptors for sheep erythrocytes. C3 and Fcgamma. Similarly, an examination of dermal mononuclear cell infiltrates showed that most of the cells lack receptors for sheep erythrocytes, C3 and Fcgamma.

Analysis of tooth marks in a homicide case. Observations by means of visual description, stereo-photography, scanning electron microscopy and stereometric graphic plotting.

In 1957 a woman was murdered in Oslo. Her left breast exhibited tooth marks. A man was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment partly because of the dental evidence. He never admitted guilt and filed a petition for retrial. The present author was appointed as new dental expert. The material consisted of the fixed breast, models of the bite mark and models of the teeth of the convict, and several photographs. By means of visual examination, a magnifying glass, a lens stereoscope and a stereomicroscope characteristic details were noted. Stereoscopic picture pairs were taken, the material was studied by means of scanning electron microscopy and a stereometricgraphic plotting method permitting the outline of the tooth mark or the biting edge of a tooth to be registered in great detail in all three dimensions in the form of a contour map. This method has not previously been applied in the analysis of tooth marks in human skin. These examinations revealed no discrepancies but showed many corresponding characteristic features between the tooth marks and the teeth of the convict, resulting in the conclusion that it is highly probable that the tooth marks in the breast were made by the teeth of the convict.

Synovial sarcoma: a case report.

The case described, of a 40-year-old woman with a 26-year history of a chronic, non-specific knee disorder, is a rather typical example of synovial sarcoma, according to the information given by other authors over the past three to four decades. The diagnostic difficulties and failures are clearly illustrated. It must be emphasized that severe, obscure joint symptoms such as our patient presented over the many years before death should have led to a proper surgical exploration of the knee. Furthermore, it should be unnecessary to stress the importance of performing a histological examination whenever excising abnormal tissue.

Reconstruction of the alveolar process by implantation of allogenic demineralized dentin.

Different materials have been used for reconstruction of the alveolar process. None of these, however, is perfect in every respect. Allogenic demineralized dentin has been shown to induce bone formation and to maintain the bone contour. In the present case this material was used to reconstruct a traumatic defect of the alveolar process in the region of the upper left incisors. The result was satisfactory, both esthetically and functionally. Additional cases and a longer period of observation will be necessary to assess the relevance of this finding.

A clinical-radiographic study of allogenic demineralized dentin implants in cystic jaw cavities.

Different implantation materials have been used in cystic cavities in the jaws to accentuate and enhance healing following enucleation. No material has proved to be ideal. In the present study, allogenic demineralized dentin was used in a group of patients with jaw cysts. The observation period varied from 6 to 66 months. The dentin group (33 cases) appeared to have somewhat more immediate postoperative symptoms than the control group (37 cases), but had a lower incidence of operational defects and higher incidence of complete healing of the cyst cavity on radiographic examination.
