[Mammographic findings following reduction mammaplasty].

Clinical and mammographic follow-up checks were made on 64 women with a record of breast reduction surgery. Mammographic changes, such as thickened skin, distortion of nipples as well as thickening and dislocation of parenchymal tissue, can be relatively easily differentiated from malignant changes, primarily in cases in which such changes are symmetrical and in which case histories and earlier clinical findings are known. Bilateral calcifications in most cases are caused by calcified fat necrosis.

Adolescent

[Results following reduction mammoplasties. A comparison of selected surgical procedures].

Lactation-retaining reducing mammoplasty was performed on 144 cases for macromastia, with 54 of them being carried out by the Biesenberger/Gelbke method and 90 according to the procedure by Strömbeck. Complications due to wound healing disorders occurred only to eleven in 98 mammae (separate evaluation) treated by the Strömbeck procedure but affected every second patient operated on by the Biesenberger/Gelbke method. In 14 patients postoperative capability of lactation was found to be unambiguously correlated with unimpaired wound healing. Postoperative pathological alterations in mammary glands may cause problems in differential diagnosis. Mitigation of clinico-somatic complaints was found to be obtainable from either surgical approach, depending on wound healing. Aesthetic results are the same.

[Dupuytren's disease in advanced age. Treatment strategy and results].

The results recorded from 1,322 surgical cases of Dupuytren's contracture of all severities have shown that successful treatment is possible even of patients in advanced age. The concept of surgery and treatment on an outpatient basis was applied to 86.6 per cent of the above cases, with local anaesthesia being used, and has proved to be absolutely adequate, provided high-continuity care by surgeons experienced in hand surgery. Results, prerequisites, and advantages are described in a differentiated manner.

[Cutaneous signs of Noonan's syndrome. Apropos of a case with ulerythema ophyogenes, disseminated pilar and sudoral keratosis and progressive alopecia].

A case of typical Noonan syndrome (NS) with eye abnormalities, pterygium colli, cryptorchid testes, lymphoedema and asymmetrical cardiac septal hypertrophy is reported in a 8-month old infant. This case was particularly interesting since it included skin manifestations which enabled an early diagnosis to be made. Ulerythema ophryogenes has already been proposed as a cutaneous marker of NS, but the keratinization disorders in our patient also included disseminated keratosis of both hair follicles and sweat glands orifices. Abnormally brittle short curly hair has already been reported, but our patient exhibited progressive alopecia which is very rare in NS. Biochemical hair analysis did not show any abnormalities of aminoacids. All these features were suggestive of keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans. It therefore seems very likely that NS is associated with keratinization disorders but ulerythema ophryogenes might only be the limited form of these disorders. The other skin manifestations of NS are reviewed. Since the patient had 4 "café au lait" spots, the relation of NS with Von Recklinghausen syndrome, and neurofibromatosis-Noonan syndrome is discussed. Watson's Leopard and cardio-facial syndromes overlap with, and may represent subsets of NS.

Overlapping ionization constants for cefotaxime.

The attribution of three ionization constants (2.1, 3.4, and 10.9) for cefotaxime has been made, based on potentiometric titration and UV absorption data simultaneously. Two overlapping constants were found (2.1 and 3.4) and attributed to the carboxyl group in the 4 position and to the aminothiazole nucleus, respectively.

Esterase activities and soman toxicity in developing rat.

The activity of carboxylesterase and cholinesterase in plasma, liver and lung of young rats at different ages (5-31 days old) have been measured. The cholinesterase activity in the tissues of both sexes were almost constant during the development, and were similar to adult male activity. The carboxylesterase activity towards methyl butyrate and 4-nitrophenyl butyrate in plasma of both sexes increased from negligible (5 days old) to adult male value (31 days old). The carboxylesterase activities in liver increased markedly during the period, whereas the lung activities increased only slightly. The toxicity of soman was 6-7 fold higher in 5 days old rats compared to 30 days old rats. The decrease in toxicity correlated well with the increase in plasma carboxylesterase.

Aging

[The value of possible skull-cap replacement surgery].

After describing the valence of the various possible plastic procedures for covering defects of the skull cap, the results obtained by the authors are presented. In childhood, autografting from the inner layer of the wing of the ilium or from the ribs is given preference. In adults, the authors carry out alloplasty with hot-polymerizing methacrylate in order to prevent a second surgical intervention for obtaining autogenous material. If surgery has to be carried out in the vicinity of the paranasal sinuses, autogenous cartilaginous cubes must be inserted between the sinuses and the alloplasty because direct contact of the alloplastic material with the sinuses exposed to infection hazards must be avoided.
