Psychiatric diagnoses in ulcerative colitis. A controlled study.

Fifty patients with UC and 50 matched controls with urolithiasis were interviewed with the SADS (lifetime version) and completed the SCL-90. According to information given during the SADS, there was a history of psychiatric disturbance in 11 UC patients (22%) and 8 controls (16%). At the time of the interview a psychiatric disturbance was present in 31 UC patients (62%) and four controls (8%), the most frequent diagnoses in the former being minor depression and generalised anxiety disorder. Patients with UC scored significantly higher than the controls on all the different SCL-90 subscales.

[Computerized occlusal verification in denture frames].

Partial removable prosthesis must foresee masticatory force distribution on all dental arch, with occlusal contacts uniformly distributed on natural and artificial teeth. These dental contacts must have the same intensity and they must happen in the same time, rispetting the gnathology laws. In this work it is investigated the possible utilization in partial removable prosthesis of T-Scan.

[T-Scan tracing of the arches. Computerized analysis].

This work deals with a quality control of the dental arch reconstructing software developed for T-Scan. We have developed an original system that employs computer controlled optical acquisition of data. This system behaves satisfactorily following our metodology.

[Diagnostic problems in a case of pyostomatitis vegetans].

After a clinical and histo-pathological introduction, the paper presents a case of Piostomatitis Vegetans, a rare stomatitis coexisting with chronic inflammatory disease of the intestinal tract, that was treated with local corticosteroids.

[Traumatic pseudocyst of the lung].

A rare complication of closed chest injury is the traumatic pulmonary pseudocyst. A well documented case of a 15-year-old boy with this definite, acutely formed, primary structural manifestation within the lung is reported with a short review of nomenclature, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment.

DSM-III diagnoses associated with dyspepsia of unknown cause.

The frequencies of DSM-III diagnoses in 30 patients with dyspepsia of unknown origin and 20 patients with organic dyspepsia were compared. Dyspepsia of unknown origin was associated with a higher prevalence of psychiatric diagnoses (86.7% versus 25.0%), particularly anxiety disturbances (66.7%).

Seminal plasma peptides inhibiting RNA synthesis.

A peptide fraction, called seminal plasma inhibitor (SPI), present in mammalian semen, was shown to block DNA transcription in vitro (Lugaro et al., 1984). Peptides responsible for this effect were partially purified from bovine seminal plasma. This report outlines the preparative procedure for the isolation of SPI and provides preliminary information on the action mechanism of the RNA synthesis inhibition.

Association of ulcerative colitis, sclerosing cholangitis and cholangiocarcinoma in a patient with IgA deficiency.

A case of an unusual association of ulcerative colitis, sclerosing cholangitis, cholangiocarcinoma and IgA deficiency in a 22-year-old man is reported. The patient was admitted to the hospital with jaundice. Ulcerative colitis had been diagnosed 4 years before. The association of sclerosing cholangitis and cholangiocarcinoma was demonstrated. In addition IgA deficiency was discovered. Possible pathogenetic implications are discussed.
