Hepatic lipid peroxidation and trace elements--nutritional status in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

The aim of this experiment was to study the interrelationships between nutritional status of chosen trace elements (Cu, Zn, Fe) and hepatic lipid peroxidation in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Both copper accumulation and disruption of iron storage were observed in livers of diabetic rats. MDA 0' (baseline) and MDA 30' (produced) levels measured in the liver were negatively correlated with blood glucose levels. MDA 30' levels correlated positively with iron concentration in the liver. It is supposed that the hormonal lability during experimental diabetes caused changes in metabolism of trace elements, and subsequently influenced the rate of lipid peroxidation.

Ephaptic influence of the electrical activity of muscle on the neighboring nerve.

Experiments were performed on isolated nerve-muscle and leg preparations of frog in order to investigate the excitatory influence of the electrical activity of muscle on the contiguous nerve under various conditions. The results show that the active muscles are able to induce multiple transmission of excitation from muscle to nerve and to modify the excitation travelling in the nerve being in contact with the muscle. It is concluded that under some special circumstances the ephaptic influence of the electrical activity of muscle on the nerve in its neighborhood can play an occasional role in the processes related with the nerve and muscle excitation.

[Treatment of an infected vascular prosthesis by irrigation-suction (lavage)].

The number of the infections of vascular prosthesises is more and more increasing in the past few years, in connection with the developing of vascular surgery. In our clinic, all septical complications amount to a 2-3% of the total number of reconstructive vascular interventions (8). In a period of 01. 01. 1980-06. 30. 1988 lavage procedure was performed in 19 cases. In 14 patients a primary wound healing was available, in 2 patients after moving away of the original prosthesis, an extra-anatomical bypass was necessary, and in three patients we could not avoid amputation. The above mentioned method is known in the literature since 1959, but in spite of this, there are few publications--with few cases--about this topic. The authors emphasize the relatively good results of this simple method.

Epidemiology of Salmonella derby strains isolated from swine, pork and pork products.

A total of 35 Salmonella derby strains, isolated from 6 types of samples of porcine origin from 9 different places in Hungary were examined for their characteristics. Thirty-two strains (91%) were of phage type 25, 2 (6%) of phage type 15 and 1 (3%) of phage type 58. Colicin production was observed in 3 (9%) strains. Five strains (14%) were found to be resistant to tetracycline (Tc). The strains harboured plasmids of 2.2, 2.4, 3.4, 4.2 and 72 Md. The 72 Md plasmid appears to be characteristic of S. derby and possibly encodes Tc resistance. The 72 Md plasmid belonged partly to incompatibility (Inc) group I1, while the other plasmid of the same size belonged to Inc. group B. The findings suggest that healthy salmonella carrier pigs carried the infection from the farm to the abattoir. Slaughtering of infected pigs may have led to contamination of the carcasses and, thereafter, that of the pork and pork products.

A synthetic, selective culture medium for Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Selective and differentiating media consisting of simple chemical components have been developed, both in solid and in liquid form, for culturing Pseudomonas aeruginosa from foodstuffs. These media work on the basic principle that Gram-negative bacteria can utilize ammonia as inorganic nitrogen source. This principle has already been utilized for developing a culture medium for coliform bacteria (Szita and Biró, 1986; Szita et al., 1988). P. aeruginosa can produce the ammonia needed for its growth by decomposing acetamide. The liquid synthetic medium was compared with the nitrofurantoin broth and the solid one with cetrimide agar by parallel inoculation of 60 raw milk samples and 20 P. aeruginosa pure cultures. The main advantages of the synthetic media are their high selectivity, high sensitivity and rapidity. Owing to their advantageous properties, the new media can be recommended for replacing cetrimide agar and nitrofurantoin broth.

Effect of interesterified fat mixtures on certain lipid indices in experimental fat metabolism disturbance.

Groups of adult Wistar male and female rats were fed isoenergetically for a three and a six weeks period either with synthetic lipogenic diet containing 5% and 20% fat mixtures (in which sunflower oil and lard were blended according to the ratio of 35:65) or with the same synthetic diet containing the mixture of sunflower oil and interesterified lard in a similar ratio. A control group received a normal diet for 6 weeks, whereas one of the experimental groups (fed with the 20% fat mixture in the lipogenic diet for 6 weeks) was given the normal diet for an additional two weeks period. After the feeding periods had been completed serum HDL-C levels and the total lipid, triglyceride, total cholesterol, free fatty acid levels were determined in serum and liver. The distribution of fatty acids in liver and heart muscle was also evaluated. In comparison to the control values it has been found: 1. Consumption of the lipogenic diet which is known to increase the serum total lipid and total cholesterol content induced in male rats a smaller augmentation in these indices when consuming the 20% fat mixture with a P/S ratio approaching the ideal 1 values, than in case of a 5% fat mixture consumption. In case of female rats, considerable increases of the serum values, could be observed at both fat consumption levels. The serum triglyceride and HDL-C contents decreased for all experimental groups. 2. The total lipid and triglyceride content of the liver increased in a high degree, the fatty liver syndrome was developed--more rapidly in males than in females. The total lipid, triglyceride and total cholesterol contents of the liver of male rats exceeded those of females by 15-30%. 3. The interesterification of the lard component of fat mixture resulted in lipid indices similar to those without interesterification, or in certain cases, they were found to be even slightly more favourable, i.e. the biological effect of the technological change proved to be adequate. 4. After a two weeks regeneration period the serum values of the male rats approached closer the normal control values than those of the females which were decreasing from a very high level but the degree of decrease was greater for them than for the male rats. The lipid content of the liver showed similar values.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Prevalence of Salmonella serotypes in pigs and evaluation of a rapid, presumptive test for detection of Salmonella in pig faeces.

Two hundred faecal samples, collected from pigs at a Budapest abattoir, were examined for the presence of salmonellae. Ninety-six isolates, belonging to 7 different serotypes, were obtained. Salmonella derby (70.8%) was the most prevalent serotype. The other serotypes isolated were S. typhimurium (8.33%), S. bredeney (4.16%), S. agona (2.08%), S. infantis (9.22%), S. london (3.12%), and S. panama (2.08%). A modified rapid presumptive test to detect salmonellae in food and food ingredients was described by Hoben et al. (1973). This test medium was evaluated to determine its efficacy in detecting salmonellae in pig faecal samples. The test gave an efficiency of 88.67%. However, the incidence of false positive results was rather high (9.43%). The public health importance of the isolates obtained and the application of the rapid presumptive test at the farm level are discussed.
