In accordance with the clonal selection theory we intended to prevent the development of artificially induced birch pollen allergy in rabbits with the aid of the radiolabelled pollen allergen (75-1000 microCi125 I-pollen/animal) intravenously administered prior to pollen sensitization. The birch pollen allergen, is accordance with Burnet's working hypothesis, reacts only with a genetically determining B cell subpopulation. The fixation of the radiolabelled birch pollen allergen to the receptors of the competent B cell clone causes the lesion of the latter. Compared with the control group, this group of rabbits showed an extensive suppression of anaphylactic reagin-like PCA-antibodies, and haemagglutinating antibodies in the blood as well as in nasal secretion. In addition, we tried to influence the already ongoing synthesis of the antibodies with the aid of subsequent intravenously administered radiolabelled birch pollen allergen (750-100 microCi 125 I-pollen/animal). An intensive suppression of the synthesis of antibodies could also be proved in this case. The simultaneous immunization of the control rabbits with birch pollen and egg albumin resulted in the production of antibodies against both antigens, as expected. The hot-labelled birch pollen antigen intravenously injected before or after immunization with egg albumin and birch pollen led selectively to suppression of anti-birch-pollen PCA antibodies. The synthesis of anti-egg albumin PCA antibodies was unaffected.
Experiments were performed on six volunteers, in order to investigate the effect of the activity of the m. biceps branchii on the median and ulnar nerves. The reflex of the m. biceps brachii was evoked by a sudden stretch and the EMG responses of the m. biceps brachii, m. abductor dig. V. and thenar muscles were recorded. Hand muscles produced early EMG potentials, the latency between them, as well as the onset of the electrical response recorded from the m. biceps brachii, being about the same as the conduction time of nerve excitation from biceps to the hand muscles. The possible mechanisms of the origin of the early EMG activity recorded from the hand muscles are discussed.
Starting from studies concerned with the electrical interaction between adjacent nerve fibres, experiments were carried out to investigate the different subthreshold effects of the electrical activity of muscle upon the neighbouring nerve. The results obtained on frog's sciatic-gastrocnemius preparations show that electrical muscle activity has an influence upon the excitability of the nerve in contact with the muscle. The results support the assumption that electrical muscle activity could play an additional role in the regulatory mechanism of the excitatory processes in nerve and muscle functions.
In order to investigate the excitatory effect of the muscle on the adjacent nerve experiments were performed on nerve-muscle and whole leg preparations of the frog. The results showed that muscular activity could generate excitation of the nerve in contact with the muscle under in situ circumstances, and that a well-defined part of the muscle could play a significant role in the transmission of excitation from muscle to nerve. The results support the hypothesis of being an additional way for muscle activity to influence the regulatory mechanism of the nerve-muscle function during excitatory processes.

Experiments were performed on frog sciatic-gastrocnemius preparations in order to investigate the different conditions under which the excitation can be transmitted from muscle to nerve. The results demonstrate that, on one hand, the proximal part of the m. gastrocnemius is of greater importance in the transmission of excitation than the distal one and, on the other hand, when the nerve is in contact with more than one muscle, the transmission of excitation is determined by the compound electrical activity of the muscles. These results together with the findings of other authors support the hypothesis that the effect of the electrical muscle activity on the nerve in contact with the muscles could play an additional role in the mechanism of the excitatory processes of both the nerve and muscle.

The effect of the electrical activity of muscle on the nerve in contact with it was investigated. The results obtained on isolated nerve-muscle preparations and on whole leg preparations of frog revealed that, under certain conditions, the action potential of the muscle is capable of producing excitation of the nerve adjacent to the muscle. These results suggest the hypothesis that the muscle activity could have an additional function in the excitatory processes by means of the electrical effect exerted on the nerve.
