Comparison of Fucithalmic viscous eye drops and Chloramphenicol eye ointment as a single treatment in corneal abrasion.

PURPOSE: To compare the healing of the cornea and the incidence of infection after traumatic corneal epithelial defect after single treatment with double bandage combined with either Fucithalmic single unit dose eye drops or chloramphenicol eye ointment. METHODS: This is a single-centre, randomised, single-blind, parallel-group study of 144 patients with accidental corneal abrasion or corpus alieni cornea who were referred to the Eye Department at Gentofte Hospital. The injured eye was examined with a photo slit-lamp before and 24 hours after treatment. The size of the abrasion was recorded and calculated on a PCX computerized video system and by slit-lamp photography. RESULTS & CONCLUSION: The Fucithalmic and chloramphenicol ointment treated groups showed no significant difference in corneal healing, local side effects, or signs of local infection.

[Extra-nasal microscopic dacryocystorhinostomy].

A microsurgical extranasal dacryocystorhinostomy, incorporating the lacrimal sac into the nasal cavity by creating a flap of the lacrimal sac mucosa and suturing it to the nasal mucosa is described. The results from 81 patients (84 eyes) with chronic epiphora operated during the period of 11 years from 1980 to 1991 are described and analyzed. The long term results on 84 eyes with a median observation time of five years demonstrated good stability of the primary results. Only one patient (2%) with distal tear duct stenosis had chronic epiphora at the re-evaluation.

Egg consumption and high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol.

OBJECTIVES: To examine if increased egg consumption raises serum high-density-lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol in healthy individuals. DESIGN: A cross-over study. SETTING: A private clinic for preventive health examinations in Copenhagen. SUBJECTS: Twenty-four healthy adults, 12 men and 12 women, aged 23-52 (median 40) years. INTERVENTIONS: After a 1-week control period each person added two boiled eggs to the usual daily diet for 6 weeks. All persons were instructed not to change the lifestyle in other ways during the whole study period. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Serum HDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglycerides were measured before, during and after 6 weeks of extra egg consumption. The corresponding serum low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol was calculated from the Friedewald formula. RESULTS: After 6 weeks of extra egg consumption serum HDL cholesterol increased by 10% (P < 0.05) and total cholesterol increased 4% (P < 0.05), whereas the ratio total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol did not change significantly. Serum triglycerides and LDL cholesterol were also unchanged. CONCLUSIONS: A moderate egg intake should not be rigorously restricted in healthy individuals.
