Efficacy of different ovitraps and binomial sampling in Aedes albopictus surveillance activity.

The efficacy of plastic, glass, and metal ovitraps has been compared in the Desenzano del Garda (Northern Italy) urban area, infested by Aedes albopictus since 1993. Plastic and glass ovitraps gave similar results while metal ovitraps collected a significantly lower number of eggs (-56 and -59%, respectively). The reason may be related to the different internal color of the metal trap with respect to plastic and glass ones. Utilizing the Gerrard and Chiang binomial model we obtained a high r2 for all 3 ovitrap types (plastic, 0.96; glass, 0.87; metal, 0.79) indicating a good fitting of the observed data to the model. According to the desired level of precision for the estimated population, the number of each type of ovitrap required is calculated. Validation of the model in a different area of northern Italy gave positive results. The simple observation of oviposition strips for presence or absence of Ae. albopictus eggs could be adopted in surveillance programs, thus allowing considerable labor saving.

Acquired immune deficiency syndrome in childhood: impaired production of interleukin-2 by HIV (LAV/HTLV III) infected patients.

The phenotype and functions of T lymphocytes and of natural killer (NK) cells have been investigated in four children and five adults from three Italian families infected with HIV (LAV/HTLV III). The results show a heterogeneous pattern of immunological derangements involving distribution of T and natural killer subsets, proliferation in response to T cell mitogens and natural killer activity. However, all infected patients tested showed a very low or absent phytohaemagglutinin induced interleukin-2 production regardless of age and clinical conditions, while concanavalin A-induced interleukin-2 production was within the normal range. The impaired interleukin-2 production in response to phytohaemagglutinin in some patients is not related to phytohaemagglutinin-induced proliferation, to clinical conditions or to a defective distribution of T cell subsets. These results suggest that, in our patients, both adults and children, HIV (LAV/HTLV III) has an "early" tropism for a subset of T cells involved in interleukin-2 production.

Multiple insulinomas of the pancreas: a patient report.

Whereas there is general agreement about the biochemical diagnosis of hyperinsulinism, the value of imaging to differentiate diffuse from focal pancreatic lesions is still a matter of debate. We describe a case of multiple adenomas of the pancreas in an eleven year-old boy. The source of hyperinsulinism was detected by pancreatic ultrasound examination and confirmed by MRI as a single adenoma of the pancreas. These radiological exams did not identify three other pancreatic adenomata. Our report outlines the difficulties in anatomically localizing the source of excessive insulin secretion in cases of hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia.

[Influence of iron metabolism on the efficacy of r-HuEPO (recombinant human erythropoietin) treatment of anemia in children on hemodialysis].

Recombinant Human Erythropoietin (r-HuEPO) is efficient in the treatment of anaemia in terminal renal failure under dialysis. Five pediatric patients, who were under periodic hemodialysis, were treated and the interaction between the metabolism of iron and the response to r-HuEPO was studied in particular. In two patients it was noticed that a significant reduction of hematic ferritin levels occurred, while an efficient erythropoietic activity was maintained. On the contrary, three patients showed iron deficiency characterized by a reduced percentage of total transferrin saturation in the plasma, in the presence of high levels of ferritin in the blood. Also discovered was a missing increase or even a fall of the hemoglobin values that were obtained till now. In these cases, the increase of the hormone dose didn't lead to an improvement, that could only be obtained by the oral or parenteral administration of iron. The Authors in conclusion affirm that iron deficiency is the first cause to be searched for and to be corrected in the presence of missing hemoglobin increase even with adequate doses of r-HuEPO.

[A new case of fronto-nasal dysplasia associated with craniosynostosis].

The Authors report a case of frontonasal dysplasia, a rare congenital syndrome, accompanied by multiple cranial synostosis. According to Cohen, frontonasal dysplasia associated with craniosynostosis may be considered as a separate syndrome and Cohen himself has described its occurrence in members of two families as "Craniofrontonasal Dysplasia". The Authors describe a sporadical case presenting various minor abnormality reported by Cohen, in addition to the hypoplasia of the corpus callosum, demonstrated by the Cranial Ultrasonography and by the NMR study of the brain.

[A case of 9p partial monosomy caused by paternal translocation. Clinical and cytogenetic aspects].

The authors describe a case of partial monosomy 9p in a newborn infant, with breakpoint in the region p221, due to a father's balanced translocation with karyotype 46 XY t(9;16)(p221;q224). The phenotypical features of our patient reproduce those reported in other 35 cases described up to now in the literature: trigonocephaly, upward slanting palpebral fistures, little and horizontal mouth, disproportionally long fingers and toes. Some peculiar clinical and cytogenetical features of the case are discussed, particularly the early closure of the sternal body ossification centers (already detected during the prenatal life), the partial agenesia of the splenium corporis callosi and the partial anomalous pulmonary venous return. The Authors point out the importance of an early diagnosis, based on the awareness to the clinical abnormalities and dysmorphisms, in order to provide for an adequate and opportune genetic counseling.

Thermal and ultraviolet inactivation of plaque purified measles virus clones.

Three plaque-purified measles virus clones exhibited remarkable differences in their kinetics of inactivation only after heating at 45 degrees C and none after UV-irradiation. A hypothesis is discussed of the possible dependence, in fast inactivating populations, of thermolability on a relative incompleteness of the virions.
