Segregation analysis of ocular spherical refraction data using a unified model resulted in rejection of a Mendelian hypothesis of genetic transmission in nuclear families of both Japanese and European ancestries. Similar analyses of families which included at least 1 myope gave no evidence for the hypothesis that myopia is determined in part by a major gene. Most of the variation associated with ocular refraction, or with myopia, seems to be nongenetic in origin.
Three fluorigenic reagents were tried in order to increase the sensitivity of the detection of various amines. The derivatives formed were then used to develop a reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) procedure for the separation of at least five amines. Dns-C1 and fluorescamine were rejected. The chromatogram of Dns-amines from red wine was overcrowded with unidentifiable peaks. It was then postulated that ammonia or phenol derivatives or other by-products of the Dns derivatization reaction interfered with the separation of amines. Fluorescamine, although it produced highly fluorescent derivatives, had the drawback of reacting with di- and polyamines to give more than one derivative and this interfered with the resolution. o-Phthaldialdehyde (OPT) was used successfully for the derivatization of amines in red must and wine. The method involved the reaction of amines with OPT in the presence of mercaptoethanol followed by extraction of the derivatives with ethyl acetate. A reversed-phase HPLC system was developed for the separation of OPT derivatives of agmatine, cadaverine, ethanolamine, histamine, phenylethylamine, putrescine, tryptamine, tyramine, spermine and spermidine within 40 min.

As part of a larger study on family functioning, the authors administered a questionnaire on individual attitudes toward family values to 158 Japanese-American and Caucasian families. Differences between the generations on questions of authority and responsibility were predictable; few differences were found between ethnic groups. However, differences were striking between adolescent boys and girls, regardless of ethnicity: Girls valued family affiliation, closeness, and emotional expression significantly more highly than did boys. The authors emphasize the need for families to value girls' needs for closeness and emotional expression as highly as boys' needs for independence and self-differentiation. They suggest that the concept of separation-individuation as the major goal of adolescence be reexamined.

There is substantial relation between individuals serum uric acid level and their heights and weights. Even when the association of uric acid level with height/weight is partialed out, significant resemblances in uric acid level are found between biologically related persons (parents and offspring; siblings) but not between spouses. When the association of height/weight is partialed out, uric acid level does not have a significant association with measures of cognitive ability or with educational or occupational attainment.
The Hawaii Family Study of Cognition provided an opportunity to investigate the frequency and implications of non-agreement, or mismatches, between observed and expected genetic marker phenotypes of husbands, wives, and children. Mismatch data from 68 families in which one or both spouses were known not to be a biological parent were used to determine the rate of undeclared nonparentage in 1,748 families in which conventional relationships were claimed. Two independent approaches gave consistent estimates, suggesting that approximately 2.3% of the 2,839 tested children from these families were probably the result of infidelity, concealed adoption, or another event. About two-thirds of the mismatches detected were probably due to properties of the techniques employed.

Acid phosphatases from human saliva have been demonstrated by the zymogram technique. Six phenotypes were found. Family and population studies suggested that the phenotypes are the product of two loci, Sap-A with three alleles A, A' and O, and Sap-B with two alleles B and O.
