Relationship between various functional impression techniques and different operators.

The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the relationship between the reproducibility of soft tissue contours by three different functional impression techniques and four dentists for mandibular distal-extension removable partial dentures. The selected functional impression methods were Lejoyeux, Rouot and McLean techniques. A mucostatic impression technique was used for the control group. To compare and measure the degree of tissue displacement, a three-dimensional coordinate measuring system was used. The differences in vertical displacement of soft tissue among the operators were statistically determined for each impression technique used. Lejoyeux technique produced the least variation in tissue displacement followed respectively by McLean, mucostatic and Rouot methods.

Retentive characteristics of different dental magnetic systems.

It is necessary to recognize the retentive capabilities of magnetic systems to assess their clinical performance. This study determined the retentive characteristics of one open-field and two closed-field commercial dental magnetic systems. The effect of speed of separation and the space between the magnet and its keeper on the retention force were evaluated. The magnets and their respective keepers, embedded in acrylic resin blocks, were tested with fast and slow speeds of separation. The maximum retention values of the magnetic systems were tested with slow speed of separation. The fast speed of separation was designed to reflect mandibular movement. Various spaces were developed between the magnets and their respective keepers, and magnetic systems were tested only in slow speed of separation. The fast speed of separation dramatically lowered the retention force of each magnetic system. As the space increased between the magnet and keeper, the retention values diminished rapidly. While closed-field systems demonstrated higher retentive forces than the open-field system, the open-field system was less affected by the various spaces.

Nephrocalcinosis in newborn.

Nephrocalcinosis is uncommon in childhood, and almost always develops outside the newborn period. Over the last decade, nephrocalcinosis due to multifactorial pathogenesis has increased in very low birthweight infants. In this report a 23 day old full-term baby with nephrocalcinosis secondary to distal renal tubular acidosis is described.

Breast milk beta-glucuronidase and prolonged jaundice in the neonate.

Breast milk samples from mothers of breast-fed, healthy, term newborns with unexplained prolonged jaundice were analyzed for beta-glucuronidase activity. Mean enzyme activity was 75.7 +/- 34.5 modified Sigma units/ml in the breast milk samples ingested by the study group of jaundiced babies (n = 25) and 82.2 +/- 40.1 modified Sigma units/ml in the samples ingested by the control group of non-jaundiced babies (n = 20) (p > 0.05). Enzyme activities at 2, 3 and 4 postnatal weeks were 101.0 +/- 39.9, 66.0 +/- 20.7 and 57.0 +/- 22.4 modified Sigma units/ml in the study group and 87.9 +/- 36.1, 58.5 +/- 15.0 and 88.3 +/- 49.1 modified Sigma units/ml in the controls. The differences were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). We conclude that breast milk beta-glucuronidase activity may be a contributory factor, in the presence of other variables, in hyperbilirubinemia but it is neither the main nor the only cause of prolonged jaundice in neonates.

[Disorders of kidney function in asphyxic newborn infants].

In this study it was aimed to investigate the renal function disturbances at an early stage of term newborn babies with perinatal asphyxia. 18 term newborn babies with the diagnosis of perinatal asphyxia were followed in the first 3 days of their lives, and various laboratory tests were applied to evaluate the renal functions. The results were compared with 10 healthy newborn who were chosen as a control group. The renal functions glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and fractional sodium excretion (FENa) were found significantly impaired up to 60% in the asphyctic babies especially those whose clinical presentation was expected to be severe.

Effect of surface treatments of porcelain on the shear bond strength of applied dual-cured cement.

The effect of different surface treatments of porcelain on the shear bond strength of the applied dual-cured cement was examined. Acid etching with hydrofluoric acid, roughening the porcelain surface by means of grinding with a diamond bur, and the use of silane coupling agent alone and with combinations of these surface treatments were used. Silane treatment resulted in a shear bond strength on roughened porcelain surfaces that was statistically significantly greater than all other treatment groups (p < 0.05). However the use of two mechanical bond systems together with a chemical bond did not improve the shear bond strength.

Neonatal suppurative parotitis: a vanishing disease?

A case of neonatal suppurative parotitis due to Klebsiella pneumoniae is described. This is the first case reported in the last 20 years. Infection with unusual microorganisms should be taken into account when planning antibiotic treatment, especially in hospital acquired infections of the salivary glands in the newborn.

Mothers' perceptions of their preterm infants treated in an incubator or on a heated water-filled mattress: a pilot study.

Ten Swedish and 23 Turkish mothers delivering premature infants with a birth weight of less than 2000 g were investigated concerning their attitudes and feelings towards their newborn babies when the infants were treated either in an air-heated incubator or on a heated water-filled mattress (HWM). The first interview took place during the first few days after delivery and the second interview in the case of the Swedish study two weeks later and in the Turkish study one week later. In the first interview, feelings of fear, unreality and insecurity predominated, although significantly more so among the mothers of the incubator group. These feelings had changed strikingly by the time of the second interview among the mothers whose infants were treated on the HWM, but persisted to a large extent among the mothers whose infants remained in an incubator. The results of both investigations indicate that the mothers' perceptions of their infants improves when the prematurely born infant is treated on an HWM instead of in an incubator.

[An evaluation of the bond strength of plastic teeth to acrylic denture base material].

Plastic teeth are preferred as functional portions with acrylic denture base material. The resin teeth have become the integral part of the denture by their chemical bonding with the base. But several factors effect the bonding: faulty boil-out procedures, residual wax on ridge-laps of the teeth, careless application of tin-foil substitutes to the teeth. On the other hand, grinding the glossy ridge-lap surface, painting the teeth with monomer or a solvent, preparing retention grooves on the ridge-lap portion of the teeth effectively lock the teeth to the denture base. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the bond strengths of the acrylic resin teeth and denture base material with retention grooves on the ridge-lap portion of the teeth. As a result of this study, bond strength between resin teeth and the denture base material is increased by the mechanical retention applied on the ridge-lap portion of the teeth.

Rewarming preterm infants on a heated, water filled mattress.

Sixty low birthweight infants (1000-2000 g) admitted to a neonatal care unit in Turkey were studied. Those not requiring intensive care were randomly assigned for treatment either in a cot on a heated, water filled mattress kept at 37 degrees C (n = 28) or in air heated incubators with a mean air temperature of 35 degrees C (n = 32). On admission 53 (88.3%) of the infants had body temperatures between 30 degrees and 36 degrees C. There was good correlation between axillary and rectal temperatures in the infants while they were hypothermic. Normal temperatures were achieved within the first day and remained within this range during the subsequent days after admission in all the infants treated on the heated, water filled mattress, whereas they were not achieved until three days later in the incubator group. The neonatal mortality among those treated on the heated, water filled mattress was 21%, and among those treated in the incubator 34%. The heated, water filled mattress provides a good alternative to skin to skin contact with the mother, and to the use of a complex and expensive incubator for rapidly attaining and maintaining normal temperatures in the low birthweight newborn.

[Evaluation of the occlusal plane in dentulous and edentulous subjects].

The occlusal plane is an important factor in stability and esthetic of dentures. The location of the occlusal plane in complete dentures is a controversial subject. The occlusal plane in complete denture has often been oriented anteriorly to fulfill esthetic and posteriorly to Camper's line. However, recently the methods used for locating the occlusal plane appear to be less limiting. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the different concepts of occlusal plane. A roentgenographic cephalometric investigation was conducted to compare the position of the occlusal plane of the artifical teeth with that of the natural teeth which existed before the remaining teeth were extracted.

[Effect of disinfection on linear and dimensional stability of impression materials].

Given the potential for transfer of pathogenic microorganisms from dental impressions, a method for surface disinfection of impressions is needed to prevent spread of infection by way of impressions and casts made from them. The effects of disinfectant solutions on the impression materials linear and dimensional stability to prevent viral infections are investigated in this article. For this purpose, irreversible hydrokolloid and silicon rubber base impression materials and five disinfectant solutions were used. No apparent linear and dimensional change could be detected after 30 minute immersion in any of the disinfectants tested.

[Use of endodontically treated teeth in removable partial dentures].

In our study, cases where teeth with excessive crown loss served as abutments, where examined in Kennedy Class II modification 1, that have tooth and tissue support on removable partial dentures which were constructed with the same design. Our study aims to examine, how vertically directed forces are transmitted to the supporting tissues by using photoelastic method. Teeth with case post and core appliances were used as abutments for removable partial dentures. Vertical loading procedure following the construction of removable partial dentures with the same design, revealed distribution of force over dentulous and edentulous ridge areas. When a comparison between endodontically treated and sound abutment teeth, was made, we had the conclusion that teeth with excessive crown loss can successfully serve as abutments for partial dentures, because the results of our finding exhibited no significant difference.

[Subjective evaluation of major connector designs for mandibular removable partial dentures].

The dentist himself is responsible for the design of the removable partial denture, because he must know and apply the biomechanical principles also. Two mandibular removable partial dentures, one with a lingual bar and the other with a lingual plate as the major connector were constructed for 7 men and 9 women patients who had mandibular Kennedy class I edentulous area. Patients used each type of prothesis for one month. At the end of this period, speeching, chewing and comford of partial dentures were evaluated according to the patients subjective impression. In general, patients adapted best to major connectors that covered soft tissues least was better. As a result, generally patients preferred lingual bar type denture.
