[A case of herpetic meningoencephalitis. Serological and imaging diagnosis].

The paper reports a case of HSVE observed in a 46-year-old patient with a negative anamnesis for previous HSV infection and with no objective signs of herpetic muco-cutaneous infection at time of hospitalisation. Due to the impossibility of carrying out bioptic and cultural tests, the diagnosis was based on the increased levels of specific anti-HSV1 antibodies in the liquor; these findings were compared to those found in serum, taking into account the increased antibody titres and in particular the ratio between the level of liquor and serum albumin and that of specific antibodies in both liquor and serum. The diagnostic importance of cerebral CT was confirmed by the early revelation of morphostructural alterations during the acute phase. RMN also allowed a more detailed imaging diagnosis to be made. From a therapeutic point of view, the paper confirms the value of acyclovir treatment.

[Hydatidosis of the psoas muscle. Description of a case and review of the literature].

A rare case of echinococcus cyst of the psoas muscle is described in a 64-year-old male patient. Following evaluation with echotomography, CT and MRI, he was treated with Albendazole for five months. After there the cyst was evacuated by ultrasound-guided aspiration and he received another course of chemotherapy. Recent evaluation revealed the patient is well and cyst-free.

Echinococcosis

A retrospective analysis of the perio-prosthetic aspect of teeth re-prepared during periodontal surgery.

This paper describes a retrospective study in which the gingival and periodontal status was assessed at crowned and natural teeth. 510 crowned teeth and 510 natural teeth in 109 subjects were examined. The time elapsed between active therapy and the clinical examination was: (i) 1 to 3 years for 270 teeth; (ii) 3 to 5 years for 168 teeth; (iii) 6 to 9 years for 72 teeth. 90% of the patients were on a recall schedule that required prophylaxis once every 3 months; 8% returned every 6 months and 2% once a month. Plaque index and gingival index were assessed at 4 sites per tooth and pocket depth at 6 sites per tooth, the highest reading per tooth being used for the statistical analysis. The results indicated that there was no difference in plaque and gingival indices between crowned and natural teeth. In addition, the gingival status of the crowned teeth was good, irrespective of the position of the crown margin (subgingival, at the gingival margin or supragingival).

Effect of teicoplanin and vancomycin on Staphylococcus aureus ultrastructure.

Morphological changes induced by teicoplanin and vancomycin on Staphylococcus aureus have been comparatively evaluated. The most pronounced structural damages were found on the cell wall which was uniformly thickened on bacteria exposed to teicoplanin while it was of irregular thickness and often absent around the cells in those exposed to vancomycin. The inhibitory action of teicoplanin on proteoglycan polymerization but not on nucleic acid and protein synthesis indicates that the effect in the wall is due to the accumulation at this level of proteoglycan soluble precursors continuously produced by the cell. The different effects induced by vancomycin on cell wall morphology can also be related to the compatibility of this antibiotic in altering cytoplasmatic membrane function and ribonucleic acid synthesis.

Anti-Bacterial Agents

Ultrasonographic and microbiological diagnosis of mycetic liver abscesses in patients with AIDS.

A rare case of multiple mycetic abscesses in a patient with AIDS is reported: the diagnosis was suspected after an ultrasound (US) examination and was obtained with US guided percutaneous puncture. The US appearance and differential diagnosis of mycetic liver abscesses are discussed and the increasing role of US and US guided percutaneous puncture in the screening of these patients is stressed.

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome

The morphogenesis of BLV (bovine leukemia virus) cultivated on FLK (fetal lamb kidney): an ultrastructural study.

A new cell line, obtained by co-cultivation of fetal lamb kidney cells and lymphocytes collected from an adult calf affected by enzootic bovine leukemia, was studied for bovine leukemia virus (BLV) morphogenesis. In this new cell line, called FLK-BLV, persistently infected with BLV, we identified extracellular and intracellular BLV particles. We never observed "budding" particles along the cell surface, and therefore assumed it was a new BLV maturation process in the cell vacuoles. In fact we found mature and non-mature particles connected with the cell-membrane system or cellular debris within vacuoles. We suggest that the viral envelope could be supplied by vacuole membrane. In our samples we also observed a cytopathic effect with syncytia formations similar to those observed on other BLV-producing cell lines.

Combined Modality Therapy

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV): an ultrastructural study.

H-9 cells producing HIV were examined by electron microscopy to value the virus-host cell relationships. HIV fine structure was also studied. HIV induces little cellular damages and it can penetrate into the cytoplasm by phagocytosis. Phagocytosis of the virus could play an important role in the mechanism of cellular infection.
