The role of equipment that has direct contact with the carcase in the spread of Salmonella in a beef abattoir.

Counts of Salmonella were performed by the most probable number technique on 16 articles of abattoir equipment having direct contact with the carcase. Forty samples were collected from each article over 21 months. The contamination rate of these articles with salmonellae varied from nil % for a saw used to quarter the sides to 47.5% for stainless steel tables and hooks. Mesh gloves were also highly contaminated, salmonellae being isolated from 32.5% of gloves on the slaughter floor and 40% of those in the boning room. Salmonella counts ranged from 1.0 to 3,663 organisms per article. Mesh gloves, cutting boards and stainless steel tables were found to have counts that were at times greater than 1,000 salmonellae per article.

Humoral immunity in kidney transplant recipients.

Sera obtained from kidney transplant recipients at various times after the graft were investigated for the presence of cytotoxic antibodies to B and T human lymphoid cells and for their ability to inhibit mixed lymphocyte reaction between allogeneic lymphocytes. More than 50% of sera from 35 such patients contained cytotoxic antibodies to B lymphocytes and 27 of 33 sera blocked and miced lymphocyte reaction by 25 to 75%. A statistically significant association between the presence of cytotoxic antibodies to B cells and the ability to block the mixed lymphocyte reaction was found in the group of patients with functioning grafts. However, the presence of cytotoxic antibodies to B lymphocytes did not correlate with the outcome of the graft.

A simplified parameter of LV function in children with congenital heart disease.

Myocardial state in children with various congenital anomalies was assessed using pressured-derived parameters; Vmax and Vpm. A simple approach, based on the relationship between peak value of the first derivative of the left ventricular isovolumic pressure and its associated total pressure, for identifying patients with impaired myocardial function is described.

Learning difficulties: staff support needs in residential services.

The past 20 years have witnessed a movement away from hospital-based care and accommodation for people with learning difficulties towards dispersed housing in the community. This affects not only the users of such services but also the staff employed to work with them. Because of this, it is important to closely monitor whether the need for staff support and staff development is being met appropriately. This article discusses the results of a survey carried out by Mansfield and Ashfield Community Mental Handicap Team to evaluate such service provision by interviewing the managers of residential services. It was found that the areas of largest perceived shortfall between need and provision were meetings between staff from different residential units and training in the skills of counselling, keyworking and liaising with the relatives of service users. The implications of the survey for service planning and future research are discussed.
