Sister-chromatid exchanges in lymphocytes and mutagenicity in urine of nurses handling cytostatic drugs.

Sister-chromatid exchanges (SCE) in peripheral blood lymphocytes and mutagenicity of urine (Ames test) were measured in a group of 21 nurses professionally handling antineoplastic drugs and in a group of 21 unexposed controls. No differences in SCE frequencies and in urinary mutagenic activity between exposed and unexposed groups were detected. A clear positive increase in urinary mutagenicity in the TA98 Salmonella strain was observed with increasing number of cigarettes smoked, whereas no evident influence of smoking on SCE was seen. Age, coffee and alcohol consumption did not show any detectable effect in the two tests.

A new oncogene in human thyroid papillary carcinomas and their lymph-nodal metastases.

Using DNA transfection analysis on NIH 3T3 cells, activated human oncogenes have been isolated from a variety of fresh solid tumours. Thyroid neoplasias show a wide range of lesions varying from slowly progressive well-differentiated tumours to anaplastic highly malignant neoplasms. Therefore they represent an attractive model to investigate the role of oncogene activation in different stages of the neoplastic state. Here we report the detection of transforming activity in DNAs extracted from five thyroid papillary carcinomas and two of their respective lymph-nodal metastases.

Allelic structural genes for the expression of mature of immature endogenous type-C virus in C57BL/he and C57BL/6J mice.

Type C particles produced in a great amount by the exocrine pancreas of normal C57BL mice have been found by electron microscopy to retain their immature morphology in C57BL/6J mice and to develop into the mature form in C57BL/He mice. Examining F1, F2 and BC1 hybrids between the 2 strains, evidence of a dominant allelism for the immature phenotype was found.

[Training needs and role of general practitioners for preventing measures and medical surveillance of ex-exposed to occupational carcinogens].

The study was aimed at investigating in a sample of general medicine practitioners the level of epidemiologic and law knowledge as well as the degree of sensitivity to the topic of subjects formerly affected by occupational cancer. From the research, carried out on a sample of 745 practitioners from two northern Italy highly industrialized regions, come out the need for training and information on the problems associated with identification and management of subjects formerly exposed to professional cancer.
