[High-resolution computed tomography in the diagnosis of branchial otodysplasias. A report on 10 cases (15 ears)].

Computed Tomography (CT) is not yet widely employed in the evaluation of temporal bone diseases in pediatric patients. Our experience is reported in the study of branchial otodysplasias (10 cases, 15 ears) by means of a high-resolution program. Indications, advantages, limitations and risks of this technique are discussed. Some technical details are reported, such as number and type of scans, length of data acquisition, thickness and feed of slices, electronic image reconstruction, and radiation doses given to the lens. The method employed to immobilize younger patients is also described. CT findings in the single cases are summarized in the tables. The most significant images of 5 cases are also reproduced. A careful analysis of the cases in our series highlights the advantages provided by the use of high-resolution CT in the evaluation of the temporal bone in pediatric patients, especially as far as dysplasias are concerned.

Complications of pelvic lymphadenectomy in patients with endometrial adenocarcinoma.

The complications of surgical treatment in 193 cases of endometrial adenocarcinoma, subdivided into two groups, were analyzed: 58 without lymphadenectomy and 135 with systematic pelvic lymphadenectomy before total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy with vaginal cuff. The only significant differences concern the number of patients requiring transfusions and the length of the postoperative stay. It is suggested that lymphadenectomy should always be performed when an abdominal approach is chosen.

The role of the vaginal colonization of the medical and paramedical staff in the nosocomial transmission of group-B streptococcus.

The authors consider the presence of streptococcus of group B in the vaginal flora of the medical and paramedical staff who work at the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Clinic and at the Department of Neonatology at the S. Matteo Polyclinic. The identification of fellows (6 cases, 6.8%) colonized by GBS improves the hypothesis of the possibility of a hospital-transmission of the microorganism , and this transmission explains the possible bacterial colonization of newborns, whose mothers are GBS negative. The importance of such a type of transmission has to be referred overall to the possible onset of a neonatal meningitis, in regard to its mortality (20-30%) and to the neurological complications, which can be observed in the child even later on.

Chromosome constitution of in vitro segregated haploid and diploid cells of the mouse.

The composition in segregated haploid sets of paternal and maternal chromosomes has been studied in order to verify whether their composition is uniparental of mixed, fixed or variable. Primary cultures where prepared using kidneys from hybrids of strains of Mus musculus in which the parental chromosomes are distinguishable; the maternal set consists of 20 teleocentric chromosomes, the paternal set of 9 metacentric chromosomes, derived by Robertsonian fusion and 2 telocentrics. Applying Seabright's banding technique, an analysis of segregated haploid and diploid cells, which have originated spontaneously through polyploidisation-segregation processes was carried out. It was concluded that the haploid sets have a variable composition of paternal and maternal chromosomes.
