Intra-abdominal pressure measurements using a wireless radio pressure pill and two wire connected pressure transducers: a comparison.

Intra-abdominal pressures were measured simultaneously with a wireless radio pill and two wire-connected pressure transducers introduced orally and rectally respectively. Measurements were made on 8 men during common postures, simple activities and static and dynamic lifting. An acceptable correspondence was found in wave forms of the generated pressure curves in time and shape. The three systems showed, however, a less good agreement in recorded peak differences, i.e. highest and lowest pressure responses to each task. The radio pill is simple to use, but more difficult to calibrate and expensive, compared to the wire-connected methods, which however are less attractive for use in the work environment.

Disc pressure measurements in para- and tetraplegic patients. A study of of mobilization and exercise in para- and tetraplegic patients.

The intradiscal lumbar pressure was measured in 10 patients with para- or tetraplegia and in one normal subject. The pressure was registered both in the horizontal position and during tilting on a table, during the performance of a standardized exercise program for the upper extremities, as well as during cough, during abdominal strain and while the subjects were being turned from the supine to the lateral position. The increase in pressure during the tilting to an angle of +30 degrees, and mostly to +50 degrees was less than the maximum pressure change during the exercises to which an immobilized patient with acute unstable fracture of the spine, was exposed daily, such as being turned, performing respiratory exercises and muscular training for the upper extremities. Provided fixation was secured with a belt, patients with unstable fractures of the thoracic and lumbar spine maybe treated with a "more active immobilization" tilting them in the bed even during the acute stage. Forward flexion exercises in the shoulder joints with hand weights produced a greater increase of the intradiscal pressure than did abduction exercises with the corresponding load. Spasticity produced a considerable increase in intradiscal pressure.

Ontogeny of the rat hepatic receptor for 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin and its endocrine indepence.

The ontogeny of the 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) receptor was studied in Sprague-Dawley rats by quantitation of the receptor in liver cytosol using isoelectric focusing in polyacrylamide gel. No differences by sex in the receptor concentration were seen at any of the ages studied. Newborn, 21-day-old, and 42-day-old rats contained significantly more receptor in the liver cytosol than did 56-day-old rats. There was no significant difference in the receptor concentration in liver cytosol from 7-day-old rats compared to that from 56-day-old rats. The maximum receptor concentration was found in cytosol from 21-day-old rats [36.1 +/- 24.0 (S.D.) fmol/mg protein]. Adult rats (56 days old) contained the lowest concentration of receptor (13.3 +/- 6.3 fmol/mg protein). The level of TCDD receptor in liver cytosol from adult rats was not significantly changed by orchiectomy, ovariectomy, adrenalectomy, or hypophysectomy. The maximum for TCDD receptor concentration at puberty corresponds to the reported maximum for the induction of aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase activity. However, no further conclusion can as yet be drawn concerning the regulation of the TCDD receptor.

The sitting posture: an electromyographic and discometric study.

The disc pressure of the third lumbar disc and the myoelectric activity of several muscles of the back were measured. Three standing and nine unsupported sitting positions were studied as well as eight support parameters and six sedentary tasks. 1. Myoelectric activity is about the same in standing and in relaxed unsupported sitting. In the unsupported sitting positions the highest level of activity is found in anterior sitting and the lowest in posterior sitting. In the muscles of the cervical and lumbar regions the activity is always lower than in the muscles of the thoracic region. The disc pressure is considerably higher in unsupported sitting than in standing. In the unsupported sitting positions the highest disc pressure is found in anterior sitting and the lowest in sitting straight. 2. Both the myoelectric activity and the disc pressure decrease when the back is supported. Of the support parameters, the backrest inclination is the most important, myoelectric activity and disc pressure both decreasing with an increase in inclination. The disc pressure is considerably reduced also when the lumbar support is increased and when armrests are used. 3. Myoelectric activity and disc pressure are both comparatively low in writing, higher in typing, and still higher in lifting. In the car driver's seat the disc pressure increases both when the gear is shifted and when the clutch pedal is depressed. When the gear is shifted, there is also an increase in myoelectric activity.

Radiographic exophthalmometry.

Radiographic exophthalmometry is based on the simultaneous exposure of a radiograph and a photograph. The fixed reference point for both eyes is the tuberculum sellae, which is a midline structure. Eye position is correlated with skull size and race to provide a sensitive detection of exophthalmos. A statistically significant difference in the position of the eyes in US black and white people has been found to exist. No difference in the position of left or right eyes has been found in either US black or white people.

Localization of intraorbital foreign bodies: an improved photoradiographic method.

A previously described photoradiographic camera used to localize intraocular or intraorbital foreign bodies has been modified to a more versatile unit. One photograph and one radiograph are taken simultaneously, and the pictures are combined, whereby the eye appears as its own indicator on the radiophotograph. More than 50 foreign bodies have been successfully localized with the camera which is easy to handle and can be used in any x-ray film room where an overhead tube is available.
