[Hematologic and dermatologic side-effects of antibiotic therapy].

The report details possible haematological and dermatological side effects due to co-trimoxazole: agranulocytosis and epidermiolysis bullosa (Lyell) respectively developed after short-term therapy with co-trimoxazole in two women treated for tonsillitis and acute relapse of chronic obstructive bronchitis respectively. The clinical findings, therapeutical management and clinical outcome of both patients are described. Reviewing the literature the relevance of co-trimoxazole induced side effects is discussed.

[The effect of burns on the complement system].

Serum levels of total complement CH 50 and the complement components C1, C1 inactivator, C2, C4, C3c, and C3 activator were measured in 20 patients with burn injuries. The findings were assessed for any possible correlations between the results of serological investigations, severity of burns and clinical aspects of the patients.

[Cancellous bone grafting for fingers and metacarpus].

Bone grafting using cancellous bone is a reliable method treating fresh and old fractures. In the period 1974-1977 the Department of Plastic Surgery of the University Hospital "Bergmannsheil Bochum" treated 39 cases of finger- and metacarpal-bone injuries and bone diseases successfully by cancellous bone grafting. Indications, technique and results of our methods are described.

Cisternography with isotopes following posterior fossa surgery in children.

Surgery of posterior fossa tumors is afflicted with some important problems. One of these is the postoperative communicating hydrocephalus. According to the literature this form of hydrocephalus is found in 10-30% of all children operated on; but a permanent shunt is necessary in only 8-18%. Aim of the present investigation was to find out disturbances of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)--circulation and--reabsorption after posterior fossa surgery. Therefore 25 children ranging in the age from 3 to 12 years were examined on the basis of isotope cisternographic studies 8 to 21 after the operation. In 4 cases all parameters of pathological CSF-dynamics were found which required a permanent ventriculo-atrial shunt. 21 children showed a minimal or significant accumulation of the isotope in the posterior fossa but a normal circulation and a sufficient clearance on later scans. In these cases neither a temporary nor a permanent shunt was necessary. These findings are confirmed by follow-up examinations between 2 and 3 years.

[Three-stage method in lung scintigraphy: ventilation, diffusion and perfusion (author's transl)].

A combination of three stages--ventilation, "perfusion" and diffusion-- has proved to be the optimal method in the scientigraphic exmaination of the lung. 85mCrypton is preferred for ventilation studies compared with 133Xenon, in view of its more suitable radiation energy and lower solubility. In the pre and post-operative investigation of the lungs, ventilation estimations are essential, providing a more reliable perameter than "perfusion estimations". The results from "perfusion" measurements with MAA or microspheres frequently do not correspond with those obtained by 133Xenon. It is still debatable whether the use of MAA or microspheres provide perfusion values and it would be better at present to speak of MAA fixation results.

[The scintigraphic diagnosis of meningiomas (author's transl)].

There is a scintigraphic trio which indicates, with a high degree of probability, the presence of a meningioma. It consists of intensive uptake of radio-pertechnitate immediately after injection, a level, or only slowly declining, time-activity curve over the tumour and corresponding intensive fluorine uptake of the skull, even in the absence of radiological or histological evidence of bone involvement.
