Major syndromes of psychoneurologic disorders in cardial achalasia are described. Their major pathogenic mechanisms were revealed in a combined clinico-electrophysiological study involving psychological testing. Differentiated methods treatment of psychoneurologic complications of cardial achalasia are described (sedative, neuroleptic drugs, general enforcing and supporting therapies) that proved effective in catamnestic observations.

A comprehensive randomized study involved 138 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Clinical follow-up of the patients was supplemented by computer-aided tomography in 40 cases and electroencephalo-, rheoencephalo- and echoencephalography in 25 cases. Twenty-five patients were subjected to experimental and psychological examination. Follow-up for as long as 4 years was conducted in 56 patients. The main syndromes of psychic disorders in MS patients were as follows: neurosis-like disturbances (asthenic, hysteriform and obsessive syndromes), affective disturbances (apathic and anxiety depression, euphoria without decreased intellect), as well as organic oligophrenia, psychotic states and epileptiform syndrome in the initial status. Structural changes in the brain were found to be the principal factor in the genesis of the described disorders. The authors propose a differential approach to the treatment of the identified disorders including the use of tranquilizers, antidepressants, neuroleptics and nootropic drugs, as well as methods of rational psychotherapy.

On the basis of clinical and follow up study of 106 patients with multiple sclerosis, including psychological tests and computerized tomography (34 observations), the authors specify the major types of psychic disorders related to this disease and represented in the form of the asthenic, hysteroformative, obsessive, and depressive syndromes, as well as in the form of an initial state with the clinical picture of organic dementia. Correlation of the examination data to computerized tomography findings usually reveals a direct relationship between the degree of psychic disorders and the severity of a cerebral injury. The authors point both to the necessity of controlling the psychic disturbances described and to their importance as a telltale sign in making the differential diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.
