Dopamine receptors in the hypertrophied rat heart.

1. Dopamine (DA) binding sites in the left and right ventricle of hypertensive rats were assessed after two weeks of induction of hypertension by left renal artery occlusion. 2. The ratio of left ventricular (LV) weight to total body weight was significantly increased in hypertensive rats from 2.046 +/- 0.120 mg g-1 to 3.125 +/- 0.090 mg g-1 (P less than 0.01) while no significant difference was noted in the right ventricle (RV). 3. The hypertrophied LV was associated with a 78% increase in its protein content, however, the ratio of protein content to ventricular wet weight was not significantly different from controls. No change in RV protein content and concentration was observed. 4. Dopamine affinity of sarcolemmal protein was not significantly different in control and experimental LV and RV and the ratio of DA affinity in LV:RV was 10:1. 5. Saturation of LV with DA was reached at around 7 min whereas RV was saturated at approximately 15 min.

Comparative in vitro susceptibility studies of FCE 22250 and rifampicin on Legionella and Chlamydia trachomatis strains.

The in vitro activities of rifampicin and the new rifamycin FCE 22250 were evaluated against the intracellular pathogens Legionella and Chlamydia trachomatis. The data reported in this study give evidence that FCE 22250 shows excellent in vitro results, even better than those obtained with rifampicin, leading to the possibility of clinical applications of this new drug on Legionnaire's disease and chlamydial infections.

[Enuresis: clinico-epidemiologic study. Preliminary communication: its relation to essential headache].

Sleep disturbances being considered as a risk factor for headache and the enuretic episode being defined, preliminary data are reported on a clinical epidemiological survey into the greater risk that headache enuresis represents for women despite the fact that the phenomenon is more common among men. Finally it is hypothesised that there is only one qualitative and/or quantitative pathogenetic mechanism that may be transmitter type, or in the light of recent studies, receptorial.

[The cytopathic effect induced by strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa producing hemolysin, leukocidin and proteases in Hep-2 cells].

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the leading causes of infection in compromised hosts, including patients with burns, cancer and natural and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Several exotoxins produced by P. aeruginosa, have been shown to contribute to the pathogenicity of the organism. Although their mode of action is known, little information is available about the interaction of these toxins with eukaryotic cells and the sequence of the pathological events. For these reasons, the early cytopathic effect (CPE) induced on Hep-2 cells infected by several P. aeruginosa strains was analyzed. Early cytotoxicity, (one h after infection) manifested by morphological evidence of cells death, followed exposure only to strains that produced one or more toxins such as leukocidin, haemolysins and proteases, and seems to be a multifactorial effect. In fact, each one of these virulence factors may induce CPE in late but not early stage.

Our experience regarding precautional chemotherapy in breast cancer.

14 patient with breast cancer of loco regional diffusion (M0), 4 of whom had negative axillary lymph nodes, were administered precautional chemotherapy with CMF, on the basis of anatomo-clinical prognostic elements (size of the neoplasia, grading (tumoral limits, neoplastic embolisation etc.). Such elements with data on hormonal receptors allowed us to select the patients with high relapse risk, to undergo medical treatment.

Recovery and susceptibility testing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from extrapulmonary specimens by the BACTEC radiometric method.

This study was carried out to evaluate the sensitivity and rapidity of the BACTEC radiometric techniques for isolation and susceptibility testing of mycobacteria from extrapulmonary specimens. Concentrated specimens of urine, pleural fluid, and blood as well as other extrapulmonary specimens were processed for the recovery of mycobacteria and for drug susceptibility testing, employing conventional and BACTEC radiometric methods. Out of 483 specimens processed, 20 were found to be positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis on the conventional Lowenstein -Jensen medium, and 19 were found to be positive in the BACTEC 7H12 medium. Average recovery times were 22.5 days for the conventional method and 10.9 days for the BACTEC method. When isolated cultures were tested for susceptibility to streptomycin, isoniazid, rifampin, and ethambutol, results were reported at an average time of 22 and 5.4 days for the conventional and BACTEC methods, respectively, with good correlation.

[Diagnostic value of antibody-coated bacteria in urine sediment (author's transl)].

An immunofluorescence test for detection of antibody-coated bacteria in urinary sediments of patients with significant bacteriuria was carried out. According to previous data antibody-coated bacteria were not observed in urines from patients with cystitis, while they were observed in urine specimens from patients with pyelonephritis. These results confirm that the immunofluorescence test can be useful in distinguishing infection of kidney from infection of the bladder.

Serum levels of retinol-binding protein in different genetic types of retinitis pigmentosa.

The level of retinol-binding protein (RBP) was determined by a single radial immunodiffusion technique in the serum of patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) carefully classified according to their specific genetic type, i.e., autosomally recessive, dominant, sex-linked, and other such as those forms associated with Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl or Winkelman's disease. Highly purified human normal RBP was used as a standard. In none of the patients with RP studied was the serum level of RBP found to be significantly different from that of the control subjects.
