Heterogeneity of axon terminals expressing VGLUT1 in the cerebral neocortex.

Using immunocytochemical techniques and confocal microscopy we have studied the localization of the vesicular glutamate transporters (VGLUTs) 1 and 2 in the mammalian cerebral cortex. The cardinal observations gathered to date can be summarized as follows: 1) Many VGLUT1-positive puncta coexpressing synaptophysin-1 outline pyramidal cell somata and proximal dendrites; of these, a sizeable fraction coexpress VGAT, the vesicular transporter for GABA; 2) VGLUT2-positive puncta are also present in layers II-III and some of them coexpress VGLUTI. These findings suggest that in the cerebral cortex of adult rats axon terminals expressing VGLUT1 are heterogeneous.

[Clinical and therapeutic experience during two years at the "Consultation Center" for the study of menopausal and postmenopausal problems established at the USL 19 in East Bologna].

The authors analyse two years' activities at the outpatient clinic set up for the prevention of menopause-related disorders at Mazzacorati Family Planning Clinic (USL 29-Bologna). They emphasise the fact that menopause is characterised by a complex interaction of biological, psychic and socio-cultural aspects with the result that requests for consultancy are extremely varied and sometimes, at least apparently, even contradictory. From these findings it emerges that in a sample of 440 women attending the centre, 28% requested information sessions and a further 10% expressed the need for a discussion focused on sexual problems. Moreover, while "hormone" therapy is currently positively accepted by the majority of women, the percentage of women refusing or suspending treatment is not negligible. It is worth recalling that 38% of women in pre-menopause, albeit strongly motivated to use an oral contraceptive, did not start treatment or suspended it within the first 6 months, although no collateral effects were reported, and 24% of women in spontaneous postmenopause did not commence hormone replacement therapy or suspended it in spite of having reached an acceptable level of wellbeing.

Comparing a public and private sector NFP program: implications for NFP expansion.

This paper synthesizes a six year collaboration between a natural family planning (NFP) non-governmental organization (NGO) and the National Health Service of the Emilia Romagna region in Italy. It also compares the public program experience with NFP services provided in the private sector in the adjacent region of Veneto. Midwives provided NFP services in government family health clinics while in the private sector NFP was taught by non-health laypersons in a church-based facility. The populations served by these two programs were different. Women in the public sector were slightly older and two-thirds were married. Forty percent of the clients had chosen to use NFP to achieve a pregnancy. The private sector client, recruited in part through premarriage counseling programs, was equally divided between married and single women, though the majority came for advice on avoiding or spacing pregnancies. In both regions NFP users were more highly educated than the general population.
