Taste perception for phenylthiocarbamide and food choice--a Hungarian twin study.

A total of 98 MZ and 67 like sexed DZ adult twin pairs were studied for taste sensitivity to P.T.C. The MZ pairs were also tested for their food favoritism. A P.T.C. screening test showed a concordance in "tasting" or "non-tasting", within the MZ versus the DZ pairs. For the comparison of food choices of the P.T.C. tasters and non-tasters (members of MZ pairs) a quantity called "Tastership Test Point" (TTP) was constructed. Based on an analysis of the TTP values it may be suggested that taste sensitivity to P.T.C. and food preferences are not completely unrelated characters. These results serve as a contribution to the authors' previous findings obtained in Hungarian adolescents.

Estimation of zinc and other trace elements in the nails of Hungarian adult twin pairs by neutron activation analysis.

Nail samples of 157 adult Hungarian twin pairs were examined for different trace elements by neutron activation analysis. Comparing the within-pair-concordance for zinc contents of the twins of different zygosity, a much higher concordance in monozygotes than in dizygotes was observed. The authors suggest the idea that the zinc content in the human organism, at least in some organs, may be genetically controlled.

A new acoustic method for the discrimination of monozygotic and dizygotic twins.

The close similarity of the voices of consanguineous persons has suggested that there must exist hereditary phonetic parameters. To test this hypothesis, a method for characterizing numerically the similarity or dissimilarity of voices of twins with zygosity previously established by anthropological methods was elaborated. By speech processing and appropriate classification strategy the method has attained the discriminating power of blood-group determination for zygosity. The hereditability of certain physical parameters of the human voice has also been suggested.

Betaninuria: a genetic trait?

A total of 58 MZ and 41 DZ Hungarian adult like-sexed twin pairs were studied for the presence of betanin in urine (called betaninuria) after the ingestion of a standardized beetroot juice. By means of a semi-quantitative technique, betaninuria values of all test persons were determined. Several mathematical models were tested to find a probability distribution fitting well to the empirical data. The hereditary character of the intensity of betaninuria cannot definitely be accepted although some circumstances pointed to the effect of genetic factors on the phenomenon.

Ketone compound smelling ability: study in Hungarian twins.

On the basis of their earlier experiments the authors assumed that the ability to recognize the smell of two ketone compounds, acetone and methylethylketone (MEK), might be determined genetically. In the present work of smelling test was performed in adult Hungarian twins, 61 like sexed DZ pairs and 87 MZ pairs. No connection was found between twin zygosity and intra-pair concordance for MEK, while in the case of acetone smelling some connection may exist. A highly significant correlation was found between the smelling ability to acetone and MEK. Females seemed to be better smellers than males. Comparing the taste perception for PTC to the smell perception for acetone the supposition of a possible genetic linkage between the two traits, put forward by other authors, could not definitely be confirmed.

[Food favoritism and taste perception for P. T. C. in Hungarian pupils (author's transl)].

It is generally supposed that human food choice is merely under the control and influence of the environment. The authors examined connections between a genetically determined character, taste sensitivity to P.T.C. and food favoritism in different Hungarian populations, using a Food Like/Dislike Chart constructed for their purpose. Furthermore, they tested monozygous and like-sexed dizygous twin pairs for both characters. They concluded that genetic factors play a significant role on human food favoritism.
