[Clinical results of filling intraoral bone defects with ionomeric porous microimplants (V-Os)].

In a clinical trial over a period of two years 50 cavities were filled up with an ionomeric porous micro implant (V-Os)* as bone replacement material after apicectomy and excision of cysts. Primary healing was found in 43 cases. 3 months after the operation 44 of 46 examined cases showed no pathological signs. In two cases the material had to be removed. 2 years after the operation 35 cases should be examined, in one case there was a fistula, the other cases showed no pathological signs. The comparison of the individual reproducible X-ray pictures after 3, 6, 12 and 24 months shows a bone regeneration next to the implanted micro implant.

Alveolar Bone Loss

[Medications and Lyell syndrome].

Lyell's syndrome, also known as toxic epidermal necrolysis, is one of the most devastating generalized skin disorders with a high mortality rate. The clinical manifestations are similar to those seen with extensive second-degree burns. Since drugs are considered to be responsible agents frequently, the dentist treating his patients with antibiotics and analgetics should be aware of this possibility.

Analgesics

[Trauma in the anterior tooth area of the youthful dentition from the surgical viewpoint].

A choice of treatments is available for traumatised anterior teeth. Apicoectomy combined with pin insertion is recommended for fractures of the middle or apical part of the tooth, or in cases of loss of the whole tooth single implants. In many cases which previously did not appear to be amenable to treatment it is today possible to preserve the damaged teeth at least over a longish period.

Child

[Alternate method for closure of oro-antral fistulas. Plastic covering of jaw opening with lyophilized Dura and alcoholic solution of Prolamin].

The operative closure of an oroantral fistula due to tooth extractions by the method of Rehrmann consists of various disadvantages, e.g. postoperative pain, swelling, flattening of the vestibulum and scar-tissue. Two alternative methods to close fresh oroantral fistulas without surgical intervention are described. By the use of prolamin occlusion gel or lyophilized dura these disadvantages can be avoided. Both techniques were successfully attempted on patients. The rate of failure is on both counts under 4%. Some indications limits must be strictly regarded. Both methods are really a good alternative to the usual operative procedure of Rehrmann and can easily be applied even on patients of great risk.

Collagen

[Susceptibility of frequency adapted cardiac pacemakers to dental treatment].

Two rate-responsive pacemakers (Activitrax and Sensolog) were tested in order to show up to which extent its function can be disturbed by dental treatment. Inhibition of the pacemaker occurred by switching the electrical dental appliance on and off, or by moving it back and forth. In most cases, inhibition was only evident when the distance between the pacemaker and the electrical appliance was less than 10 cm. The electrome proved to be the most potent source of disturbance, as the function of the pacemaker was totally inhibited when it was switched on and off with a frequency of 1 to 2 Hz and even at a distance of 2.8 meters. During dental treatment--especially osteotomies--vibrations are transferred upon the patient which can cause an increase of the pacing rate.

Dental Care for Persons with Disabilities

[Follow-up of patients with atypical facial pain].

100 patients with abnormal pain in the facial area have been examined and questioned about their symptoms and the preceding therapy. At the time of this study the patients already had a history of pain of about five years. Since no cause could be discovered for the pain, treatment was limited to symptomatic relief using injections of long-acting local anesthetics or carbamacepine. Generally, both methods resulted in a relief of the symptoms.

Adolescent

[Single support of atrophic edentulous mandible with endosseous implants. Modified method of implantation with Ledermann titanium plasma-coated screw implants (TPS)].

In contrast to the usual technique of Ledermann to implant four TPS-implants in edentulous mandibles a modified method with only two implants is described. The advantages of taking only two implants are the easier implantation technique, the lower costs, and especially a better dynamic of the full denture. In connection with a round bar most of the pressure produced by the masticatory muscles is taken by the mucosae and almost no eccentric forces effect on the implants. This technique should only be applied combined with a denture in the edentulous upper jaw. Strictly regarding the range of indications our rate of failure with two implants is not higher than with the usual method described by Ledermann.
