College students' smoking behavior, perceived stress, and coping styles.

The purpose of this study was to examine college students' smoking behavior as well as their current smoking status and its effects on perceived levels of stress and coping styles. Students from four universities completed the Perceived Stress Scale, the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations and a smoking questionnaire. Of the 1330 students who participated in the study, 19 percent were current smokers. On the Perceived Stress Scale, current smokers' mean score was significantly higher than that of the students who had never smoked. In addition, the current smokers' mean score for Emotion-oriented Coping was significantly higher than that of the students who had never smoked or formerly smoked. The former smokers' mean score on Avoidance-oriented Coping was significantly lower than the never and the current smokers. Ten percent of the students smoked their first cigarette after high school, while 11 percent started to smoke on a daily basis after high school. Based on the findings, programs that focus on smoking prevention and cessation for college students are recommended.

Training needs in school health education research.

The purpose of this paper is to review the history of professional preparation of health educators for the conduct of research, to present several major issues and problems related to school health education research, and to identify the characteristics of present training models. Despite the fact that health education can trace its origin to early in this century, it was not until 1953 that a formal statement on research competencies was formulated. Since that time, however, a great deal of activity has been identified. While several issues have been raised regarding research strategies and techniques used by health educators, current training models hold a great deal of promise for strengthening these efforts. The characteristics of such training models are described.

Current federal activities in school health education.

In 1979, the Federal Government released a report, "Healthy People," that examined the major health problems and the associated preventable risks facing Americans. For the school-age population in particular, several problem areas are notable, such as violence (suicide and homicide), accidents, and drug and alcohol abuse. A number of risk factors related to personal behavior have been identified for these and other health problems facing young Americans. Comprehensive school-based health promotion programs have the potential to influence positively the health status of the school-age population. This article highlights some of the more important recent Federal activities related to school-based health education.
