[Effect of hyperbaric oxygenation on the corticosterone content of the blood in experimental acute respiratory distress syndrome].

The three series of experiments conducted on 139 adult wistar rats it was found, that two-hour stay of the animals in barochamber under the pressure of 3 atmospheres reduces considerably the percentage of mortality rate and decelerates the development of arterial hypoxemia in rats with an experimental model of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) reproduced by intrapleural injection of oleic acid (0.27 ml/100 g). Stalle in comparison with the control (I) series elevation of corticosterone in the animal blood II and III series (conduction of HBO correspondingly in 4 and 12 hours from the beginning of the process) is considered as the manifestation of one of the most important mechanism of organism adaptation to the development of acute hypoxia in ARDS.

[Use of hyperbaric oxygenation to correct an acute experimental respiratory insufficiency syndrome].

The results of the experiments on 159 Wistar rats have shown that one two-hour session of hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) under the pressure of 3 ata affects considerably the course of acute respiratory insufficiency syndrome: the mortality rate decreases markedly, the development of arterial hypoxemia and structural changes peculiar to the "wet" lung could be averted. The results of the investigations demonstrate the possibility of HBO application for the prophylaxis and treatment of the syndrome.

[Oxygen consumption in the lungs of dogs with a closed thoracic injury].

The experiments on dogs have demonstrated that lung contusion and injury of the rib cage cause the increase in overall oxygen consumption and lung oxygen consumption within the first hours after trauma. During the next week in dogs with contusion lung gradual recovery of the initial levels is observed. In convalescents with rib cage injury the indices in this period remain increased, reaching maximal level in animals with fatal outcome several hours before death. The authors believe that the early posttraumatic period in closed chest trauma is characterized by the increase in the lung oxygen consumption.

[Interrelation of cardiodynamics and pulmonary gas exchange in an experimental model of the acute respiratory failure syndrome].

Experiments were made on 30 dogs with lung contusion or injury to the chest wall. Eighteen animals demonstrated acute progressive arterial hypoxemia which proved to be fatal. Apart from the symptoms pointing to the development of gas exchange abnormalities, one could observe progressive impairment of myocardial function. A close correlation was established between pulmonary gas exchange and myocardial contractility. Myocardial dysfunction is regarded as one of the leading components in the pathogenesis of acute respiratory insufficiency in chest injury.

[Morphofunctional characteristics of acute respiratory failure in closed chest injury].

The results of experimental reproduction in dogs of some components of closed thoracic injury: traumatic injuries of the lungs and disturbed carcass of the thorax which led to the development of acute respiratory insufficiency are presented. Morphological manifestations of the latter consisted in hemorrhages of various sizes and atelectasis, as well as marked hemodynamic disorders developing, according to electron microscopy, at the level of aerohematic barrier. The concurrent arterial hypoxemia facilitated the development of hypoxic lesions in the myocardium. These studies demonstrated that myocardial lesions may aggravate the severity of respiratory insufficiency.

[Changes in cardiac output during the acute period of closed chest injury].

It has been established in dog experiments that conjunction of external blood loss (20 ml/kg) and injury to the costal frame produces a clear-cut decrease in the pumping function of the heart leading in part of the cases to acute heart failure and death of the animals. A progressive normalization of the pumping function and homeostasis recovery were recorded even in the absense of a specialized management, provided the adaptation reactions of the heart and body were on the whole preserved following the period of temporal depression of the myocardium.

Acidosis↗

[Pathogenesis of acute heart failure following closed chest injury].

Experiments on 54 dogs with reproduced standard components of closed trauma (injury to the costal skeleton, lung contusion, associated with partial blood loss) have shown potential development of a standard cardiodynamic reaction that ended in acute heart insufficiency in part of cases. This reaction was characterized by a complex of signs including an increase in stroke volume, in maximal systolic pressure and in final diastolic pressure, in the right ventricle. These alterations developed in the presence of arterial hypoxemia and acidosis and correlated well with cardiodynamic disturbances.
