Ionization quenching in LSC.

Ionization quench function Q(E) introduces an important correction in the CIEMAT/NIST tracing method. In this paper we present a detailed analysis of the equations used to compute the counting efficiency of 55Fe. The counting efficiency of this radionuclide is very sensitive to the shape and values of Q(E) for this method. We demonstrate that the Birks equation and stopping power are not adequate to obtain low discrepancies between the experimental and computed efficiencies. An empirical procedure to compute accurate Q(E) functions is also given.

Inelastic scattering and stopping power of low-energy electrons (0.01-10 keV) in toluene.

In this study, the stopping power for electrons in toluene is reported for incident energies ranging from 10 to 10,000 eV. The present results have been obtained by combining the calculated inelastic electron scattering cross-sections with an experimental energy loss procedure. Calculations have been carried out by means of a quasifree absorption model whose reliability has been checked by comparison with empirical electron scattering total cross section data. Results have been compared with the high-energy stopping power data available in the literature. For energies below 1 keV these are the first results of the stopping power for electrons in toluene.

The effect of formalin fixation on the polymerase chain reaction characterization of Entamoeba histolytica.

Formalin fixation is the most common storage, transportation and preservation method for stool samples. However, fixation dramatically reduces our ability to extract from stool samples DNA that is a suitable template for polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based diagnostic tests. In this study we evaluated the effects of formalin concentration and of the time stored in fixative on the success of PCR amplification. We found that the deleterious effects of formalin are both time and concentration dependent and may result from fragmentation of fixed DNA during its purification.

The influence of stopping power on the ionisation quench factor.

Stopping power values for high energies have been computed applying the first Born approximation and the Bethe formula. However, this approximation tends to overestimate these cross sections at low energies, reaching discrepancies on the order of 50% at energies below 1 keV for most of the molecular targets of interest. In this paper we propose a method to obtain accurate low energy stopping powers of electrons by combining total cross section measurements with a theoretical treatment of the elastic process. We determine the optimum value of the kB parameter of ionisation quenching for the stopping power obtained in this paper.

[Nutritional effect of bariatric surgery with Scopinaro operation. Analysis of 40 cases].

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the influence of bariatric surgery over nutritional status in patients with morbid obesity after 1 year of following. To know the influence of specific factors as age, sex and common channel's length. DESIGN: Retrospective study from 1998-2001. SUBJECT: All patients suffering from morbid obesity that had been operated during this period of time, 40 subjects: 28 women and 12 men with a mean age of 38 +/- 12 years old. Were studied. METHODS: We analyzed the variations of weight and other anthropometric measures, biochemical parameters and the micronutrient (vitamins A, D, E, B12, folate, C, zinc, Calcium, Magnesium) status during 1 year of following after surgery. RESULTS: Percentage weight loss was 29.7 +/- 2.9% without sex differences. A significant (p < 0.005) descent of serum cholesterol, triglycerides, and uric acid level as well as liver function markers was observed. All the hyperglycemic disturbances were reverted. 97% and 48% of the patients developed hypovitaminosis A and D respectively, that was correlated to steatorrhea. Vitamin E deficiency was found in 72% of the patients, and zinc deficiency in 68% CONCLUSIONS: Our expected weight loss 1 year after bariatric surgery is 30%, irrespective of sex and age. This loss is accompanied by a significant improvement in metabolic parameters, but the high prevalence of micronutrients deficiency that was found makes an early supplementation and close follow-in of these patients very advisable.

[Severe digestive hemorrhage by duodenal injury of Dieulafoy lesion].

The Dieulafoy lesion is a vascular anomaly generally located in proximal stomach. and consist of the presence of an artery of heavy caliber in the submucosa and mucosa, although the definitive diagnosis is anatomopathologic, with the endoscopic examination we can obtained a high precision approach. Is a rare cause of gastrointestinal bleeding although potentially fatal etiology of gastrointestinal hemorrhage. It occurs in fewer than 2% of the episodes of acute digestive hemorrhage. The injury of duodenal Dieulafoy has been communicated in a reduced number of cases and in some of them it has needed surgical treatment. We effectively presented and treat this case of a young man diagnosed in the initial endoscopy and was treated by means of injection of adrenalin and absolute alcohol.

[A study of the prevalence of alcohol consumption in the Baix Ebre region (Tarragona)].

A cross-sectional study was carried out in the Baix Ebre region about the prevalence of alcohol use, within a wider study of hypertension and other risk factors. The following characteristics were considered for the elaboration of the present study: non drinker, moderate drinker and heavy drinker, as well as the amount of alcohol intake related with demographic, socioeconomical and cultural variables such as: age, sex, urban or rural medium, marital status, place of origin, working status, social and professional level, and educational status. 64.2% of the whole population greater than or equal to 20 years were usual alcohol users, and so were 79.4% of males and 48.2% of females. According to the definition of heavy or excessive drinker, such were 21.8% of males and 2.6% of females. Males drank a higher alcohol amount, with a mean and standard deviation of 47.1 +/- 35.5. In females, these figures were 19.4 +/- 12.4 g per day. The rate of alcohol drinkers was higher in young individuals, in those with active working status, in those with medium social and professional level, and in those with medium and high educational status.
