[Euthanasia of small rodents. Reasons, methods and assessment of animal welfare].

Euthanasia of vertebrates requires a high extend of responsibility and specified knowledge, according to the regulations of the German Animal Welfare Act. Every day innumerable vertebrates, including small rodents, were euthanized from various reasons. Only part of these cases are supervised by official authorities. In this paper the available methods of euthanasia, especially of small rodents, are explained and an assessment under the aspects of animal welfare is undertaken.

[Restraint devices for animals--historical and animal welfare aspects].

A historical review is given on the reasons to use restraint measures in animals, their definitions and classifications as well as their mode of action. An attempt is made to give an assessment of these measures according to animal welfare aspects formerly and today. Special emphasis is put on considerations in conformity with the "reasonable reason", as required in the German Animal Welfare Act.

1-(Theophyllin-7-yl)-ethyl-2-[2-(p-chlorophenoxy)-2-methylpropionate] (ML 1024), a new hypolipemic agent.

1-(Theophyllin-7-yl)-ethyl-2-[2-(p-chlorophenoxy)-2-methylpropionate] (ML 1024) was tested on acute and chronic toxicity, on teratogenesis and fetotoxicity, on blood pressure and blood flow behaviour, on hypolipemic activity and general pharmacological behaviour in a screening test using 54 parameters. Results warrant further investigation of the potential therapeutic application of ML 1024 in humans based on its superiority to the well-known antilipemic clofibrate (CPIB).
