Using as a model monobactams with a substituted alpha-oxyimino moiety in the side chain (aztreonam), a series of 2-(2-aminothiazol-4-yl)-2-hydrazono-acetamido monobactam (II a, f) were prepared by condensation of the hydrazones (I a, e) (Z form) with tetrabutylammonium 3-amino-4-methyl-2-oxo-1-azetidin-sulphonate. Isomerization occurred during this synthesis and gave the E form of all compounds. Monobactams (II a, f) showed no significant in vitro antibacterial activity when compared with aztreonam and with some cephalosporins bearing the same E-hydrazono side chain.
Skin fibroblasts from two siblings with giant axonal neuropathy (GAN) were examined by both biochemical and immunocytochemical studies. The presence of intermediate filaments (IF) characteristic of these cells was affected by the growth conditions. Immediately after plating and during the following 24 hours the majority of the cells contained an IF "bundle"; however, after 4-6 days in culture only a minority of the cells retained this structure. We present evidence that trypsinization but not serum concentration is likely to influence the formation of the "bundle." The results indicate that the formation of the "bundle" may result from a defective association or relationship between the cytoskeleton and the plasma membrane.
A clinical, genetic, electrophysiological and ultrastructural study of a large kinship with peroneal muscular atrophy is reported. There was a noteworthy homogeneity in the phenotype as well as in the electrophysiological characteristics encountered in 15 affected members aged between 7 and 72 years. The symptoms appeared first in the second decade of life and stabilized by the fourth decade. There was no evidence of linkage of the neuropathy gene to the Duffy blood group locus on chromosome 1. The electrophysiological data in this family as well as the ultrastructural findings confirm that there is heterogeneity in hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type I, and support the concept of an intermediate form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

Two sisters, affected by late infantile type Sulfatidosis A, died at 22 and 15 years old respectively, presented, after autoptic examination, also a ponto-cerebellar athrophy. The EEG finding was characterized by few bioelectric abnormalities in the earlier studies of the disease and, afterwards, a progressive slower electric activities, with isolated asymmetric spikes. The typical aspects in the EEG recordings of our two patients were the presence of many rapid and diffuse elements, shay wawes without any pharmacological treatment. The significance of these peculiar recordings is there discussed.
Three children, two females and one male, born from unrelated parents show brachycephaly, ogival palate, blindness from 5-6 months and progressive piramidal symptoms. Two subjects had since sixth monthy epileptic seizures, the other one died at 5 th month. In one subject died at 28 month age, central nervous system autoptic examination shows neuronal cortical immaturity, lack of corpus callosum, visual and piramidal patways hypoplasia. The serial EEG recording shows three caracteristic aspects: a) altough a marked changes, the organization of the electric cerebral activity was partially preserved; b) a epileptogenic potentiality was present, that is caracteristic of electro-clinic immage of this subject; c) a suggestive and peculiar tendency to asincrony and asimmetry of epileptic tendency in two hemispheres.
