Considerations in treatment planning for implant-supported auricular prostheses.

Improvements in planning for the provision of silicone auricular prostheses have been achieved with CT scanning. The analysis of information using a computer workstation has enabled preoperative determination of skull thickness and position of implants in relation to the proposed location of the prosthesis. The technique is of particular value in cases of craniofacial microsomia.

Osseointegrated implants--principles and practice: 1. Osseointegration and surgical techniques with the Nobelpharma implant system.

In this series of three articles the authors describe some of the principles and practice of osseointegrated implants. Part 1 gives a detailed description of the surgical techniques required to establish osseointegrated implant fixtures (with special reference to the Branemark system). The article then gives guidance on patient selection and treatment planning. Part 2 will go on to consider prosthetic rehabilitation using osseointegrated implant fixtures. Part 3 will conclude the series by presenting a number of case studies.

Osseointegrated implants--principles and practice: 3. Case treatments with the Nobelpharma implant system.

In this series of three articles the authors describe some of the principles and practice of osseointegrated implants. Part 1 gave a detailed description of the surgical techniques to establish osseointegrated implants (with special reference to the Branemark system), guidance on patient selection and treatment planning. Part 2 described prosthetic rehabilitation using osseointegrated implant fixtures. This article concludes the series by presenting a number of case studies.

Atypical simple bone cysts of the jaws. I: Recurrent lesions.

The aetiology, clinical and radiographic features and the treatment of simple bone cysts of the jaws are discussed. Recurrence of jaw lesions is unusual. Two cases are presented of simple bone cyst in the mandible which recurred following conventional treatment. The importance of clinical and radiographic follow-up is emphasised.

Adolescent

Atypical simple bone cysts of the jaws. II: A possible association with benign fibro-osseous (cemental) lesions of the jaws.

Four cases are described of simple bone cysts of the mandible arising concurrently with benign fibro-osseous (cemental) lesions. Previous reports of such findings, and a possible relationship to the so-called 'cementoma' of the long bones, are considered. The relevance of this to the aetiology is addressed, and it is suggested that at least some cases diagnosed as simple bone cysts are closely related to the fibro-osseous lesions.

Bifid mandibular condyle.

Two cases of unilateral bifid mandibular condylar head are reported. A review of the literature showed that only four cases had been reported as occurring in living patients, although another twenty-two cases have been reported in dried skull or cadaver material. A brief discussion of the possible etiology is given.

Considerations in design and fabrication of maxillary implant-supported prostheses.

Principles of the design and fabrication of implant-supported maxillary prostheses are described. The significance of the maxillomandibular relationships, maxillary arch size to the location of the implants, and the positioning of the restored dental arch are discussed. Angulated abutments may overcome conflicts between the position of the artificial teeth and the implants. Solutions to design features that may impair achievement of a pleasing appearance, good gingival health, and well-articulated speech are considered.

Results of treatment of 20 patients with implant-retained auricular prostheses.

A prospective study of 20 patients receiving rehabilitation for a missing external ear revealed the failure of three flanged implants in a total of 60 placed for the support of a prosthesis and 10 for retention of a bone-anchored hearing aid. Factors limiting an optimal outcome were health of the cutaneous cuff around the abutments, bonding of the silicone ear to the acrylic-resin substructure, and the ability to minimize disfigurement of a congenitally deformed face.
