A pesticide runoff model for simulating runoff losses of pesticides from agricultural lands.

An integrated modeling system was developed to predict runoff losses of pesticides from agricultural lands. The system is an integration of a mathematical model, a database system, and a geographic information system. Information on soil type, land use, land slope, watershed boundaries, precipitation, pesticide usage, as well as physical and chemical properties of pesticides have been input to a GIS, managed through a database, and used for further modeling studies. The modeling outputs were in turn put into the database, such that runoff patterns along with pesticides losses could be further simulated by using a database management system. The final results could then be visualized through GIS. The developed modeling system was applied to the Kintore Creek Watershed, Ontario, Canada, for simulating losses of atrazine from agricultural lands. A water quality monitoring project was carried out from 1988 to 1992 in the watershed to detect conditions of surface water pollution due to the use of pesticides. The modeling outputs were verified through the monitoring data, demonstrating reasonable prediction accuracy. The result indicated that the model provides an effective means for forecasting pesticide runoff from agriculture lands.

A GIS-based modeling system for petroleum waste management. Geographical information system.

With an urgent need for effective management of petroleum-contaminated sites, a GIS-aided simulation (GISSIM) system is presented in this study. The GISSIM contains two components: an advanced 3D numerical model and a geographical information system (GIS), which are integrated within a general framework. The modeling component undertakes simulation for the fate of contaminants in subsurface unsaturated and saturated zones. The GIS component is used in three areas throughout the system development and implementation process: (i) managing spatial and non-spatial databases; (ii) linking inputs, model, and outputs; and (iii) providing an interface between the GISSIM and its users. The developed system is applied to a North American case study. Concentrations of benzene, toluene, and xylenes in groundwater under a petroleum-contaminated site are dynamically simulated. Reasonable outputs have been obtained and presented graphically. They provide quantitative and scientific bases for further assessment of site-contamination impacts and risks, as well as decisions on practical remediation actions.

Uptake of atmospheric mercury by deionized water and aqueous solutions of inorganic salts at acidic, neutral and alkaline pH.

Mercury (Hg) is well known as a toxic environmental pollutant that is among the most highly bioconcentrated trace metals in the human food chain. The atmosphere is one of the most important media for the environmental cycling of mercury, since it not only receives mercury emitted from natural sources such as volcanoes and soil and water surfaces but also from anthropogenic sources such as fossil fuel combustion, mining and metal smelting. Although atmospheric mercury exists in different physical and chemical forms, as much as 90% can occur as elemental vapour Hg0, depending on the geographic location and time of year. Atmospheric mercury can be deposited to aquatic ecosystems through both wet (rain or snow) and dry (vapour adsorption and particulate deposition) processes. The purpose of the present study was to measure, under laboratory conditions, the rate of deposition of gaseous, elemental mercury (Hg0) to deionized water and to solutions of inorganic salt species of varying ionic strengths with a pH range of 2-12. In deionized water the highest deposition rates occurred at both low (pH 2) and high (pH 12). The addition of different species of salt of various concentrations for the most part had only slight effects on the absorption and retention of atmospheric Hg0. The low pH solutions of various salt concentrations and the high pH solutions of high salt concentrations tested in this study generally showed a greater tendency to absorb and retain atmospheric Hg0 than those at a pH closer to neutral.

Estimation of atmospheric mixing heights over large areas using data from airport meteorological stations.

For this study, ground and sounding meteorological data at 16 airports were used for estimating the atmospheric mixing heights in Hebei Province of China, including Beijing and Tanjing areas. Three methods were compared for this purpose, which are the dry adiabatic method, the conventional Nozaki model, and a modified Nozaki model. The feasibility of using airport meteorological data to determine mixing heights in large area was verified through the use of measured mixing heights and observed SO2 vertical profiles. The study not only estimated the mixing heights over large areas but also compared different early morning sounding temperature profiles to identify feasibility of using 2:00 a.m. sounding profiles to estimate mixing height by the dry adiabatic method. The paper also described the mixing heights over different areas such as mountain, sea boundary and plain areas. The results have considerable significance for air quality prediction and environmental management. A novel approach to estimation of atmospheric mixing heights over large area is introduced, requiring only the input of readily available airport meteorological data.

Violation analysis for solid waste management systems: an interval fuzzy programming approach.

This paper introduces a violation analysis approach for the planning of regional solid waste management systems under uncertainty, based on an interval-parameter fuzzy integer programming (IPFIP) model. In this approach, several given levels of tolerable violation for system constraints are permitted. This is realized through a relaxation of the critical constraints using violation variables, such that the model's decision space can be expanded. Thus, solutions from the violation analysis will not necessarily satisfy all of the model's original constraints. Application of the developed methodology to the planning of a waste management system indicates that reasonable solutions can be generated through this approach. Considerable information regarding decisions of facility expansion and waste flow allocation within the waste management system were generated. The modeling results help to generate a number of decision alternatives under various system conditions, allowing for more in-depth analyses of tradeoffs between environmental and economic objectives as well as those between system optimality and reliability.

A system dynamics approach for regional environmental planning and management: a study for the Lake Erhai Basin.

In recent years, water-quality deterioration associated with rapid socio-economic development in the Lake Erhai Basin, China, has acquired more and more attention from the public and the government. An effective planning for the basin's environmental management system is desired for sustainable regional development. In this study, an environmental system dynamics model, named ErhaiSD, is developed for supporting this planning task. The ErhaiSD consists of dynamic simulation models that explicitly consider information feedback that governs interactions in the system. Such models are capable of synthesizing component-level knowledge into system behaviour simulation at an integrated level. This capability is very useful in analyzing and recommending policy decisions. For the study case, interactions among a umber of system components within a time frame of 15 years are examined dynamically. Four planning alternatives are considered. The base run is based on an assumption that the existing pattern of human activities will prevail in the entire planning horizon, and the other alternatives are based on previous planning studies. The contributions of various nonpoint pollution sources to the lake's eutrophication problems, and the effects of industrial activities and wastewater treatment processes on pollution problems in the Xier River are analyzed through the developed modeling system. The exercise draws attention to the implications of different alternatives to the system's environmental and socio-economic objectives. The modeling results are directly useful for simulating and evaluating a variety of decision actions and their dynamic consequences, and answering questions such as 'What should I do?', 'What if I do?' and 'What are the expected consequences?'.

Overexpression of matrix metalloproteinase-10 and matrix metalloproteinase-3 in human diabetic corneas: a possible mechanism of basement membrane and integrin alterations.

We have previously described decreased immunostaining of nidogen-1/entactin; laminin chains alpha1, alpha5, beta1,gamma1; and epithelial integrin alpha3beta1 in human diabetic retinopathy (DR) corneas. Here, using 142 human corneas, we tested whether these alterations might be caused by decreased gene expression levels or increased degradation. By semiquantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, gene expression levels of the alpha1, alpha5, and beta1 laminin chains; nidogen-1/entactin; integrin alpha3 and beta1 chains in diabetic and DR corneal epithelium were similar to normal. Thus, the observed basement membrane and integrin changes were unlikely to occur because of a decreased synthesis. mRNA levels of matrix metalloproteinase-10 (MMP-10/stromelysin-2) were significantly elevated in DR corneal epithelium and stroma, and of MMP-3/stromelysin-1, in DR corneal stroma. No such elevation was seen in keratoconus corneas. These data were confirmed by immunostaining, zymography, and Western blotting. mRNA levels of five other proteinases and of three tissue inhibitors of MMPs were similar to normal in diabetic and DR corneal epithelium and stroma. The data suggest that alterations of laminins, nidogen-1/entactin, and epithelial integrin in DR corneas may occur because of an increased proteolytic degradation. MMP-10 overexpressed in the diabetic corneal epithelium seems to be the major contributor to the observed changes in DR corneas. Such alterations may bring about epithelial adhesive abnormalities clinically seen in diabetic corneas.

Materials selection for a dry atmospheric mercury deposits sampler.

In order to develop a sampler for measuring dry deposition rates for atmospheric mercury, suitable materials are needed that neither adsorb nor release mercury. In this paper, four materials (polyvinyl chloride (PVC), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), Teflon and glass) were tested. Each of the materials was placed in a beaker containing mercuric solution under varied conditions for pH, preservative concentration, initial mercuric concentration, temperature, acid type and contact time of the material. The concentrations of the mercuric solutions were determined using the cold-vapor atomic absorption (CVAA) technique. The experimental results show that glass has the lowest absolute net adsorption rates (NARs) of 0.026-1.13 pg/m2 among the materials tested. Teflon, PVC and ABS have NARs ranging from 0.54 to 10.4 microg/M2 over an adsorption duration of one or two weeks. ABS has significantly higher adsorption rates for mercury than PVC and Teflon, indicating its inappropriateness as the material for building the sampler. Teflon and PVC will be the materials of choice for the sampler. The experimental results can also be used in establishing appropriate sampling conditions in the field.

Estimation of atmospheric mixing heights using data from airport meteorological stations.

In this study, ground and sounding meteorological data at the Beijing Airport during 1991 to 1995 were used for estimating the local atmospheric mixing heights. Three methods were compared for this purpose, including the dry adiabatic method, the Nozaki model, and a modified Nozaki model. The modification of the Nozaki model included joint frequencies for wind-velocity and stability based on the complexities of local meteorological conditions. The estimated values from the three methods were verified through the data measured by the Beijing Meteorological Center. The results indicated that the dry adiabatic method has the best performance. The modified Nozaki model was better than the commonly used. This study is a new attempt in utilizing airport meteorological data to estimate atmospheric mixing heights.

An integrated decision support system for the management of petroleum-contaminated sites.

In this study, a decision-support system was developed for providing environmental managers with an integrated way for concisely analyzing and visualizing the subsurface contamination problem as well as a means for evaluating alternative remediation technologies. It integrated contaminant-transport modeling, risk assessment, and remediation-system design within a general framework. The developed system was applied to a site in western Canada that is contaminated by petroleum products. A three-dimensional multiphase multicomponent model was established, which provided a basis for further risk assessment. Several approaches based on different environmental guidelines were used to analyze risks due to the site contamination. The results suggested the urgency of taking remediation actions. Six remedial alternatives for cleaning up the site were recommended. Decisions could then be made based on a series of analyses and comparisons among the given alternatives.

Identification of cell types in human diseased corneas.

PURPOSE: Activated myofibroblasts and macrophages are often found in corneal wound models. The current study was performed to determine whether human diseased corneas that had active tissue remodeling and enzyme activities also possessed myofibroblasts, macrophages, major histocompatibility complex class II cells, and/or CD-68-positive cells. METHODS: Normal, keratoconus, keratoconus with hydrops, bullous keratopathy, map-dot-fingerprint dystrophy, failed grafts, and acid burn/neovascularized corneas were collected, frozen in OCT, sectioned, and stained with antibodies to alpha smooth muscle actin (myofibroblast marker), CD14 (macrophage marker), CD68 (lysosomal membrane marker), and HLA-DR (major histocompatibility complex class II cells). Selective histochemical stains identified lysosomal enzymes. RESULTS: Normal and map-dot-fingerprint dystrophy corneas lacked antibody and enzyme staining. Keratoconus corneas were positive for CD68, HLA-DR, and lysosomal enzymes but were negative for CD14 and smooth muscle actin. Bullous keratopathy corneas had CD68-, CD14-, and HLA-DR-positive cells, relatively normal enzyme levels, and were smooth muscle actin-negative. Failed graft corneas had significant numbers of CD68-, CD14-, and HLA-DR-positive cells and increased acid phosphatase, but these corneas were smooth muscle actin-negative. Ulcerated and vascularized corneas had positive staining with all antibodies that were examined. Cultured stromal cells from normal corneas were CD68-positive, CD14-negative, and alpha smooth muscle actin-negative, and they produced lysosomal enzymes. CONCLUSIONS: The current study demonstrates that increased presence of lysosomal enzymes, corneal remodeling, and fibrosis can occur in the absence of myofibroblasts and/or macrophages.

The association of multiple visual impairments with self-reported visual disability: SEE project.

PURPOSE: This report examines the relationship between psychophysical measures of visual impairment and self-reported difficulty with everyday visual tasks in a population-based sample of individuals 65 years of age and older. METHODS: Community-dwelling residents (n = 2520) of Salisbury, MD, between the ages of 65 and 84 were recruited for the study. Visual acuity under normal and low luminance, contrast and glare sensitivity, stereoacuity, and visual fields were measured. Subjective physical disability was assessed with the Activities of Daily Vision Scale (ADVS). RESULTS: In multiple regression analyses adjusted for demographic factors, cognitive status, depression, and number of comorbid medical conditions, each of the vision tests except low luminance acuity was independently associated with lower ADVS scores. The analyses indicate that a factor of 2 reduction in visual acuity or contrast sensitivity, comparable with that observed in mild to moderate lens opacity, was associated with a three- to fivefold odds of reporting difficulty with daily tasks. Although age alone was a significant risk factor for disability, it was not associated with overall ADVS score, once visual impairment and other chronic medical conditions were taken into account. CONCLUSIONS: Visual acuity, contrast and glare sensitivity, stereoacuity, and visual fields are significant independent risk factors for self-reported visual disability in an older population. Visual impairment defined by acuity alone is not the only dimension of the association with subjective disability. Additional vision measures are required to understand the impact of vision loss on everyday life.

Comparison of a novel electro-Fenton method with Fenton's reagent in treating a highly contaminated wastewater.

This study applied a novel electrochemical process called the Fered-Fenton method to treat a highly concentrated wastewater. By combining electrochemical reduction and chemical oxidation, the process can remove organic compounds and heavy metals in a batch reactor. A PVC-stabilizer processing wastewater was treated in this investigation owing to its high heavy metal concentration (Pb = 7,500 mg/l) and high organic concentration (COD = 11,000 mg/l). The major organic component was acetate. Direct anodic oxidation showed no effect on COD removal. Fenton's method only removed 36% of COD using 4,000 mg-Fe2+/l and 28,000 mg-H2O2/l dosage. In the Fered-Fenton process, about 89% of COD was removed with 2,000 mg-Fe3+/l and 28,000 mg-H2O2/l. Furthermore, the COD removal attained an efficiency of about 98% for 56,000 mg-H2O2/l used. Results presented herein demonstrate that the Fered-Fenton method is superior to direct anodic oxidation and Fenton's method in this case. Furthermore, the changes of the intermediate compounds including acetate, oxadate, and formate during the reaction were analyzed, which provided us with the information to propose degradation reactions of the wastewater in this system.

[Effect of dibutyl phthalate on demodicidosis].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the curative effect and safety of dibutyl phthalate on demodicidosis. METHODS: A single blinded and controlled study of human demodicidosis treated with dibutyl phthalate was conducted. One hundred and forty three patients with demodicidosis, including 81 acne and 62 rosacea, randomly divided into trial and control groups. The trial group was treated with dibutyl phthalate and control group with "new fumanling" cream twice a day in the early morning and evening respectively for six weeks consecutively. RESULTS: The rates of excellent, good, and fair efficacy and total effective rate in the trial group with acne were 53.7%, 41.5%, 4.9% and 100% respectively, with a significant difference to the control group (P < 0.05). The rates in the trial group with rosacea were 40.6%, 40.6%, 18.8% and 100% respectively, with no statistical difference to the control group (P > 0.05). No complaint of side effects in the trial group was recorded. CONCLUSION: Dibutyl phthalate is highly effective to demodicidosis without prominent adverse reactions.

Determination of risk factor associations with questionnaire outcomes: a methods case study.

Increasingly in biomedical studies, health status is inferred through a series of questionnaire item responses. Challenges for analyzing associations between such responses and risk factors include multiplicity-many indicators must be combined to derive summary statements about health status, and measurement error-persons' self-report fluctuates due to causes other than substantive health changes. In order to deal with these challenges, the authors propose a strategy which comprises three methods: 1) score the item responses, then regress the score on predictors; 2) regress each item response on predictors, accounting for within-person associations; and 3) summarize and analyze the item responses jointly, using a latent variable model. The authors develop modeling and diagnostic procedures for method 3. They then show how the three-method analytic strategy can be used to solve the problem of determining which aspects of vision are associated with self-reported functioning in activities that require seeing at a distance. They demonstrate that methods 2 and 3 illuminate basic findings from method 1 by adding specificity, describing patterns as well as severities of health impairments, and identifying isolated items that relate to risk factors differentially than others. They conclude that the three-method strategy specifies how risk factors determine questionnaire-based health outcomes substantially better than any of the methods in isolation.

Human corneal epithelial basement membrane and integrin alterations in diabetes and diabetic retinopathy.

Corneas of diabetic patients have abnormal healing and epithelial adhesion, which may be due to alterations of the corneal extracellular matrix (ECM) and basement membrane (BM). To identify such alterations, various ECM and BM components and integrin receptors were studied by immunofluorescence on sections of normal and diabetic human corneas. Age-matched corneas from 15 normal subjects, 10 diabetics without diabetic retinopathy (DR), and 12 diabetics with DR were used. In DR corneas, the composition of the central epithelial BM was markedly altered, compared to normal or non-DR diabetic corneas. In most cases the staining for entactin/nidogen and for chains of laminin-1 (alpha1beta1gamma1) and laminin-10 (alpha5beta1gamma1 was very weak, discontinuous, or absent over large areas. Other BM components displayed less frequent changes. The staining for alpha3beta1 (VLA-3) laminin binding integrin was also weak and discontinuous in DR corneal epithelium. Components of stromal ECM remained unchanged even in DR corneas. Therefore, distinct changes were identified in the composition of the epithelial BM in DR corneas. They may be due to increased degradation or decreased synthesis of BM components and related integrins. These alterations may directly contribute to the epithelial adhesion and wound healing abnormalities found in diabetic corneas.

Human hepatitis B virus and hepatocellular carcinoma. I. Experimental infection of tree shrews with hepatitis B virus.

Tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri chinenesis) can be experimentally infected with human hepatitis B virus (HBV) by inoculation with human serum positive for HBV, the experimental infection rate being 55.21%. Successive infections have been passed through five generations among the tree shrews inoculated with HBV-positive sera from the infected animals, the average infection rate being 94.0%. The experimental infection of tree shrews with HBV may be prevented by immunization with hepatitis B vaccine, the protection rate being 88.89%. Standard serum containing HBV at 10(8) CID (chimpanzee infection dose)/ml, was diluted 10(-6), 10(-7), 10(-8), 10(-9), and 10(-10) and produced infection rates of 80.0%, 88.8%, 66.7%, 55.6% and 42.9% respectively. Thus the CID50 in tree shrews may reach a dilution of 10(-9), which shows that tree shrews are sensitive to HBV infection. These results successfully establish tree shrews as a reliable and useful animal model for research on HBV infection and its relation to hepatocarcinogenesis.
