[Special vascular anastomoses for microsurgery].

Various techniques for vessel anastomoses in microvascular surgery are described. Using modified techniques, safe vascular anastomoses can be achieved even in relatively inaccessible sites. Techniques to overcome problems caused by differing vessel diameters are also shown. End-to-end and end-to-side anastomoses using continuous sutures and single sutures are described. To simplify anastomoses of multiple vessels--for example in the case of a radial forearm flap or dorsalis pedis flap--techniques are described which allow larger anastomoses in simple end-to-end and end-to-side connections.

Use of horseshoe kidneys for transplantation.

Report of a case in which a horseshoe kidney was divided and transplanted into two recipients. The literature on transplantation of horseshoe kidneys is reviewed. This renal anomaly is not a contra-indication to its use for transplantation.

[Is CMV-hyperimmune serum prophylaxis after kidney transplantation always meaningful?].

CMV-infections are a common and dreadful complication in immunosuppressed patients after kidney transplantation. This randomized, controlled clinical study investigates the influence of CMV-hyperimmune serum (HIS)-prophylaxis on infection incidence and severity of illness with regard to the type of immunosuppression employed. Though the clinical manifestation of the disease is lowered by HIS in cyclosporin-treated patients, there is a higher infection incidence with increased severity in HIS-treated ATG/Imurek patients compared to the respective control.

[Surgical management of gastroduodenal ulcer in the aged].

Very high mortality rates are encountered in emergency gastric operations in the aged. In contrast, elective surgery is associated with a low mortality rate. The outcome is strongly influenced by concomitant diseases. Timing of operation is crucial in aged patients with gastrointestinal ulcer.

Protein labelling with 3H-NSP (N-succinimidyl-[2,3-3H]propionate).

A tritium compound with low molecular weight and diameter, N-succinimidyl-[2,3-3H]-propionate (3H-NSP), was used to label histones and nonhistone proteins from calf thymus, and nuclear and total salivary gland proteins from larvae of the midge Chironomus thummi. Labelled proteins were visualized after electrophoresis in 10% polyacrylamide slab gels by fluorography. The method is much more sensitive than staining procedures, allowing to discern approx. 0.1 microgram protein.

[Cosmus Conrad Cuno (1652-1745) on a human ectoparasite: the head louse].

Cosmus Conrad Cuno, a less well known optician and inventor of microscopes from the second half of the 17th century, published in 1734 at Augsburg his Observationes durch dessen verfertigte Microscopia where along with various observations he communicated salient details pertaining to the biology of the head louse.

[Description of human hair and skin by Martin Frobenius Ledermüller (1719-1769)].

As a result of his research extended over several years the lawyer and naturalist Martin Frobenius Ledermüller published in 1761 the "Mikroskopische Gemüths- und Augen-Ergötzung". His book contains 100 coloured copper etchings dealing with all aspects of nature and a detailed accompanying text. Two copper etchings which depict human hair and skin will be reproduced here along with excerpts of the original descriptions.
