[Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity in various organs of rats on high fat diets].

This paper deals with investigations on the activity of glucose-6-phosphat dehydrogenase (G6-P-GH), a key enzyme of HMP Shunt in erythrocytes, kidney, adrenal cortex, testes and adipose tissue of rats fed a high-fat diet (50% fat), in comparison with 3% fat diet as control animals. In erythrocytes, kidney and testes no significant differences of enzyme activity were observed. The number of erythrocytes and haematocrit value were also no different. The haemoglobin level was significantly elevated. In adrenal cortex and in mesenterial adipose tissue significantly lowered activity of G6P-DH is observed. These data are comparised with former studies in liver of high-fat diet rats and with literature data from adipose patients.

[Influence of a high fat diet on serum uric acid levels in rats].

In present paper the behaviour of uric acid is investigated in serum from rats fed with a 50% fat containing diet in comparison with 3% fat diet as control group. After feeding high-fat diet 5 resp. 52 weeks the level of uric acid is significantly elevated. In the same diet group heavier animals showed higher uric acid levels than lighter animals. In these experiments the age of animals is without influence of the uric acid level in serum.

[Hemorrhagic calico papillitis. Clinical picture of pyelitic hematuria with special reference to cytodiagnostic problems].

A case is reported of hemorrhagic calico papillitis showing unilateral hematuria. There was no evidence of pathological changes either in i.v.P. or in retrograde pyelogram, angiogram, or angiogram with epinephrine. Large were found in the urine papillary cellgroups, suspicious for papilloma of the renal pelvis. It is pointed on the difficulty of differentiating such cellgroups from real papillomas of the renal pelvis. Possible are discussed causes of this mucosa proliferation and dysplasia. If there is found the following trias: unilateral hematuria, pseudopapillomatous cellgroups in urine, missing pathological changes in urological X-ray examinations (or only minimal blurs at the fornices) the diagnosis of calico papillitis has to be considered carefully.

[Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity in the liver of rats with experimental hyperthyroxinemia and hypothyroidism].

The activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase was investigated in liver of hyperthyroxinemic or hypothyreotic rats. The enzyme activity level in hyperthyroxic rats. The enzyme activity level in hyperthyroxinemic animals was significantly elevated in contrast to the hypothyreotic rats, who showed significantly reduced enzyme activity. The protein concentration in liver extracts of hyperthyroxinemic animals was slightly elevated, while hypothyreotic animals showed significantly reduced protein content of the extract.

[Protein fractions and total proteins in serum of rats on high fat diets].

This paper deals with the behaviour of serum protein fractions in rats fed 22 resp. 52 weeks a 50% or 3% fat diet using Millipore electrophoresis. The total serum protein concentration was also estimated. In rats on the high-fat diet the albumin fraction significantly dropped, while elevated levels of alpha 1- and gamma-globulin fraction were found. Serum protein content was slightly elevated in rats fed the diet 22 weeks, but this elevation was only significant after 52 weeks feeding. Within the same diet group there were no significant differences observed.

[Ringed fibres in skeletal muscles--a contribution to the statement of these structures in unselected obductions (author's transl)].

26 muscles with one or more ringed fibres, corresponding to 2,83%, have been found in 939 muscles out of 313 unselected obductions. Taking into consideration that in the M. rectus femoris alone. 21 ringed fibres were found, raises the quota to 6.7%. After desintegration into primary diseases, the cardiovascular illnesses have been accompanied with ringed fibres in 20.6%, in comparison to the other disease groups which have been rarely or not at all affected. Apart from one case probably traumatic ringed fibres formation, individuals above 49 years old are exclusively striken, at which by far the male sex prevails. The number of ringed fibres continually increases with the age, and all cases with 20 or more ringed fibres have exceeded the 60th year. Besides there is also a relation between the ringed fibres frequency and the atrophy degree of the muscle. The fact that this relation is not reversible the presence of an additional dispositional factor must be concluded. The distribution pattern of the ringed fibres is non-uniform, they occur partly disseminated or also partly flock formed, heaped up ringed fibres. They are mostly simple closed circular fibres. Compound forms are sporadically observed. A coincidence of sarcoplasmic masses was in all cases not traceable. The information at hand will be discussed. The frequent appearance in cardiovascular illnesses leads back to stress factors like hypoxidosis, acidosis etc. by reduced cardiac output, the frequency in age to multifactor reasons. The preponderance of catabolic metabolism, electrolyte shifting and disturbances of transmineralisation is particularly made responsible. Etiological traumas play an additional role particularly in younger individuals. The frequent occurrence in the male sex is referred to the different gender-dependent gauge conditions of the two fibre types.

Occurrence of myofibroblasts in the different phases of morbus Dupuytren (Dupuytren's contracture).

Twenty-one surgically removed specimens of Morbus Dupuytren (M. D.) were studied by light and electron microscopy. The cell type observed in the proliferative phase shows the basic ultrastructural features of fibroblasts, while the majority of the cells in the involutional phase resemble myofibroblasts. Myofibroblasts exhibit ultrastructural characteristics of both smooth muscle cells and fibroblasts and are said to behave functionally like smooth muscle cells. In the residual phase, typical fibrocytes of connective tissue are found. These findings confirm the concept that fibroblasts are capable of converting into myofibroblasts and demonstrate the myofibroblasts represent an intermediate cell type of transitional cellular differentiation. The significance of myofibroblasts for the development of the contracture of M. D. is discussed.

Intracellular "fibrous long spacing" collagen in morbus dupuytren (Dupuytren's contracture).

Fine structural analysis of 21 surgically removed specimens of Morbus Dupuytren (Dupuytren's contracture) in the cells of the proliferative phase revealed spindle-shaped or round, periodic banded structures of 1--1.5 micron size. These intracellular structures are surrounded by trilaminar membranes of 45 A continuous with membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum. The periodic banded structures display a light-dark pattern of 750--900 A and resemble with respect to periodicity and general morphology "fibrous long spacing" collagen. To date, "fibrous long spacing" collagen in human tissue has only been observed in the extracellular space, both in normal and pathologic conditions. Its formal pathogenesis is discussed.

[Congenital centronuclear myopathy. Two morphological variants in one family (author's transl)].

This report deals with a family in which the mother and her two daughters suffer from a congenital, slowly progressive neuromuscular disease. Histological, histochemical and ultrastructural observations of the mother's muscle biopsy reveal the characteristics of the centronuclear myopathy. In this case central nuclei and pericentronuclear abnormalities of muscle fibers are found in almost all fibers. Biopsies obtained of the two daughters show alterations especially of type I-fibers, which often are smaller than normal. The presence of these two forms of centronuclear myopathy in one family indicates that these may be only different morphological types of states of one illness. Additionally, other structural findings (rod bodies, core like regions) emphasize the similarities with other congenital slowly progressive myopathies (nemaline myopathy, central core disease).

[Hereditary neuropathic Portuguese type of amyloidosis (author's transl)].

Report of a 35 year old male with hereditary neuropathic amyloidosis of the portuguese type, the second known case in Germany. There are extensive nodular Congo red positive amyloid deposits in the endoneurium of the peripheral nerves which lead to displacement, compression atrophy and interruption of the endoneural fascicles. The amyloid fibril structure is specially noted by interference contrast microscopy. It can also be documented in unstained microscopic sections. Further extensive nodular deposits are present in the mesangium of the glomerula. The remaining organs show preponderantly affected vessel walls and collagen fibres.

[Polyneuropathy in Waldenström's disease].

The clinical course and biopsy and autopsy findings in a patient with asymmetrical polyneuropathy in Waldenström's disease are reported. Under steroid therapy the patient developed mild diabetes mellitus. In the light of the course of the disease, a causal relationship between the hematologic disease and the peripheral neuropathy is assumed. Although a peripheral nerve could not be examined on autopsy, strong lymphocytic infiltration in the autonomic nerves seems to point to a similar pathogenetic mechanism in the development of polyneuropathy. The other possible causal factors are discussed with reference to the small number of reports in the literature.

[The histogenesis of Kaposi sarcoma: a histochemical and electronmicroscopical study (author's transl)].

UNLABELLED: 1. Histologically, Morbus Kaposi is primarily characterized by a proliferation of streams composed of spindle-shaped cells, by vascular slits lined by cells, and by a minor cellular inflammatory reaction. 2. The cells lining the vascular slits resemble endothelial cells and exhibit strong alkaline phosphatase activity and a clear leucinaminopeptidase activity. They contain Weibel-Palade bodies. 3. The ultrastructural analysis of the tumor cells shows a proliferative formation resembling capillary sprouts with and without lumina. The lumina are composed primarily of poorly differentiated endothelial cells. A second typical cellular component are fibroblast-like tumor cells possibly derived from perithelial cells. 4. Indicative of M.K. are also extravasation and phagocytosis of erythrocytes with intracytoplasmic decomposition, and storage of myelinlike structures somewhat resembling Schwannian-cells. 5. CONCLUSION: M.K. is characterized by a multifocal neoplasia of capillary like structures and by a progressive sarcomatous development.
