Morpho-functional visualization of dynamic MR-mammography.

In view of an increasing use of breast MRI supplementing X-ray mammography, the purpose of this study was the development of a method for fast and efficient analysis of dynamic MR image series of the female breast. The image data sets were acquired with a saturation-recovery-turbo-FLASH sequence facilitating the detection of the kinetics of the contrast agent concentration in the whole breast with a high temporal and spatial resolution. In addition, a morphological 3D-FLASH data set was acquired. The dynamic image data sets were analyzed by tracer kinetic modeling in order to describe the physiological processes underlying the contrast enhancement in mathematical terms and thus enable the estimation of functional tissue specific parameters, reflecting the status of microcirculation. To display morphological and functional tissue information simultaneously, a multidimensional real-time visualization system (using 3D-texture mapping) was developed, which enables a practical and intuitive human-computer interface in virtual reality. The spatially differentiated representation of the computed functional tissue parameters superimposed on the anatomical information offers several possibilities: improved discernibility of contrast enhancement, inspection of the data volume in 3D-space and localization of lesions in space and thus fast and more natural recognition of topological coherencies. In a feasibility study, it could be demonstrated that multidimensional visualization of contrast enhancement in virtual reality is practical. Especially, detection and localization of multiple breast lesions may be an important application

In a feasibility study, it could be demonstrated that multidimensional visualization of contrast enhancement in virtual reality is a practicable idea. Physico-chemical surface characterization of hyaluronic acid derivatives as a new class of biomaterials.

Three hyaluronic acid derivatives with different types and/or percentages of esterification, were analyzed by means of static contact angle measurements, SEM, ESCA, ATR/FT-IR, WAXS, DSC and TGA. The physico-chemical characterization of the three different samples, in both dry and wet state, was provided in terms of surface and bulk properties. ESCA and infrared analyses showed that the surface composition of all samples differs from that of the bulk. The hydrophilic-hydrophobic character of the samples changed according to the chemical composition as shown by ESCA and contact angle measurements. Both infrared and contact angle measurements reveal that surface restructuring occurred upon hydration for all the samples and the greater the hydrophilic character of the sample, the greater and faster the restructuring phenomenon. A clear picture of the different types of chemical groups has been established at different depth for the three materials.

Plasma polymerization and grafting of ethylene oxide on polysiloxane surfaces.

Polysiloxane films were prepared by plasma polymerization and dip coating. Upon these films PEG was grafted by conventional methods, and ethylene oxide by plasma activation. Before and after grafting the films were analyzed by contact angle and ESCA measurements as well as by FTIR-ATR-spectroscopy and TOF-SIMS. Furthermore results of protein adsorption measurements are reported. The polysiloxane structures obtained by the plasma polymerization of HMDSO are rather similar to those ones yielded by dip coating. The two types of grafting applied on the polysiloxane substrates led to different structures of the grafted layers as was revealed by TOF-SIMS spectra.

ACh and 5-HT induced changes in the concentration of cytosolic inositol trisphosphate (InsP3) and inositol bisphosphate (InsP2) in the ABRM of Mytilus edulis L.

1. For determination of the phosphoinositides and inositol phosphates present in anterior byssus retractor muscle (ABRM) of Mytilus edulis fiber bundles of this muscle were incubated with [3H]-inositol. Close-to-equilibrium labelling was achieved after 14-17 hr of incubation. 2. The phosphoinositides formed during incubation were identified as phosphatidylinositolphosphates by thin layer chromatography and as glycerophosphoryl esters by anion-exchange chromatography after deacylation. Besides PtdIns, PtdInsP and PtdInsP2 two labelled products are formed, which could not be identified. 3. Inositol phosphates were separated by anion-exchange chromatography. InsP, InsP2 and InsP3 are present, while InsP4 seemed to be absent. 4. Incubation of pre-labelled fibers with ACh induces the accumulation of InsP3 and InsP2 immediately. While 5-Ht accomplishes the accumulation after a lag time of 25 sec. The concentration of cytosolic InsP does not change.

Theoretical aspects of adsorption of polar substances from polar solvents.

The efficiency of adsorbents for hemoperfusion and dialysate regeneration can be increased if suitable catalysts are fixed on their surface in an appropriate density. Suitable catalysts are oxides and salts of the transition metals. The appropriate surface density of the catalysts depends on the molecular data of both catalyst and toxin to be removed, as well as on the distribution of the adsorption sites on the adsorbent surface area. The distribution of the adsorption sites is determined by means of photoelectron spectroscopy and adsorption and desorption measurements.
